(a) Hallways / Lockers

[After waking, Satou's first instinct is to go to the library. She's certain that she will begin to panic if she thinks too hard about what's happening. The seven tally marks under her wrist itch from anxiety and she subconsciously pulls her sleeve over them. On her way to the library (or, where she mysteriously remembers it may be,) she stops at her locker. 237. Well, might as well check if she owned anything useful.

Unfortunately, nervous fingers do not handle the delicate dial well. She keeps messing up the combination, flinching when she hears footsteps in the hall or other loud noises. After a third failed attempt, Satou growls under her breath.]

[She tugs on the lock. It doesn't open.

She groans.]

(b) Library

[After confirming that her locker is empty, Satou continues on her way to the library. She's quick to find the reference books and startled to see that only reach the 1990s. Stranger still, she can't find a place to check out the books. She wanders around the library in quiet confusion for a few minutes before deciding to ask for help.

You got this, Satou. It's just talking to a stranger. You like strangers.

... But do strangers like me?

She tries to smile and be friendly when waving to the stranger, but there's a nervous twitch to that smile.]

(c) Science Room (outside of)

[She actually wanted to check out the music room. Playing music would be a good way to get a grip on her emotions, after all. Satou has done a decent job of being as quiet as a mouse, maintaining a polite and dainty façade as she plays the role of "ideal student." But when she passes the science room, Satou catches a glance at the grinning model peering the glass.

And her facade falls as she shriek in fright and swings a kick at the door out of instinct

then crumples to the floor, holding her ankle.]

Fuuu-- auuunnnyaaugh.

[Without her magic, Satou's just a normal girl, who can't even win a fight against a door.]

(d) Wild Card

Oh, that. . . you can't. You'd have to read the books here or copy them down on a notebook or photograph or something.

[She says those words indifferently with a dismissive wave of her hand.]

[ There's another thump! soon after she falls, not one that shakes the ground but rather the wall further down the hall, of a boy having jumped backwards in surprise except there was no space to jump back into.

To his credit, his first instinct is to tentatively pick his way forward towards her, except he does throw a fearful look towards the anatomical model behind the door (still grinning, skull maybe the slightest bit ajar, as if laughing) before looking back down at Satou. ]

Did you twist it...? That was a pretty... [ ...strange sounding... ] ...alarming... scream.

... Eh?

[Satou looks at the book again. She had hoped to check it out to read through. Copying down the contents means she'd have to finish it here anyway.]

I don't suppose that photocopies are a thing here..?

[Oh gosh, someone saw her? And heard her embarrassing scream too? Satou can feel the colour creeping up her neck already. She would never wish to be invisible again, sure, but she can wish that people didn't see her failings.

She slowly picks herself up again, using the wall to press a hand to while dragging herself to her feet. A twist? She blinks.]

O-Oh... Sorry. Did I worry you? [People worrying about her..!! Satou knows she should feel guilty for that, but a part of her is also quite happy.

A "good girl" would lean into not worrying him, right? So she laughs nervously into a chipper answer;] I-I mean uh nope nope! No twisties wisties in this foot, no siree!

[ His gaze slow slides away from her face at that "twistie wisties," almost as if embarrassed in her stead, unconvinced when he looks back a moment later. ]

...If you say so. That thing freaked me out too, the first time I saw it.

[ if that's any consolation ]

Best if you don't make eye contact with it.

They are, but they're outside the library so you wouldn't be able to photocopy the books.

[... she can feel her reputation cracking. how does one recover from this kind of stupidity??

Satou also averts her gaze, but because she just heard a challenge. Fortunately she does stop herself from making eye contact with the model, instead returning her gaze to his face.]

Is it alive?

I-It can't be, right? That'd be weird?

... ah.

[Some very rude thoughts run through her head.

Satou will not say them aloud, but her face does briefly twist in a way that reflects them.]

Well! That's fine. There will be no overdue fees this way. I wasn't planning to read for fun anyway.

[She arches a brow curiously before deciding to ask, arms crossed:]

What were you planning on reading for, then--and uh, what are you looking for?

Oh!

( the stranger of the day happens to be that person, who is putting up a few books back properly on their respective shelves. if anyone didn't know better, they'd just think he was a student doing an honest day's work which he is, because the librarian won't give him a real job, and so he does what he can parttime because he enjoys books in general — )

If you try speaking to the Librarian, they'll just get mad... but between me and Haruka-chan, maybe we can help.

( he's looking around his legs to see if she's around, but there's no one yanking at his jacket, nor is there any books or papers being thrown onto the ground, so maybe she left. that said, she would probably get upset with him saying this.

he stands up, setting a few books down on the cart as he leans up against it. )

Which books did you need?

[ That was not a challenge, miss!! ]

...Yeah, that would be weird.

[ Is it alive, though? ...That would depend on one's definition of the word. ]

Did you need something from inside? I could grab it for you.

[Satou hesitates. Her persona of a cutesy idiot can easily be wrecked by bookwork... But she would appreciate the help, so decides to open up enough to allow it.]

I thought that I might cross-check some world events I remember with the ones in these books. I'm curious about that.

Eh?

[She shudders at the thought, recalling the mental image of that thing grinning at them through the window. There are certainly things that she could use from a science room, yes, but not desperately.]

No, please-- You don't need to be going in there on my account.

Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps.

It might be completely different, depending on what happened in your world, I suppose.

[She trails off awkwardly, tapping her chin.]

Okay, yeah, that is still weird to say even after all these months...

[You'd think that by now she'd be used to it, but it's not something that she's easily used to.]

It seems to be similar to the events back home, up to a point.

[Satou files these facts away, mindful not to let it show that this is the kind of help she hoped for. So this is an entirely different world. She had wondered if she was simply in a makeshift past or not...

She taps her cheek thoughtfully.]

Up to a point? Are you also from after the 1990s, or do you mean there was a big historical change of some sort?

[Oh, geez. She hates to be troublesome, but at the same time... Satou knows that she'll save time by accepting his help. Even the bit about the Librarian is news to her.

Satou averts her gaze shyly at first, then manages a slight smile.]

I'm trying to learn more about the history of this place. Do they have books like that?

After the 90s-- like, 2012, specifically.

I see...

[She shifts her weight, contemplating. Then gives a small shrug as she opens up further.]

I had been curious as to why we were in the 1990s, of all places to spend our afterlives. So I was wondering if something significant happened that might explain it. But I guess you wouldn't have an idea about that, miss..?

[... shoot.

Did she just forget to ask this girl's name before beginning to ramble?]

Honestly, I couldn't tell you. I wouldn't say that this year was particularly good or bad, although I suppose there's something to be said about it almost being the turn of the century in two months...

[Not to mention other things, but she doesn't bring that up right here and then.]

There wasn't any major events in Heisei 11, as far as I'm concerned. Or at least, not anything that make me go "oh, this makes sense as to why this year was chosen". Oh - and it's Inaba. My name.

Hmm~ I wonder if there are any New Years ceremonies here?

[Satou has been disappointed that it's apparently November, since that means skipping out on her birthday. But if it means a New Years party is closer...

She smiles, bowing her head lightly.]

I'm Kuroneko Satou. But you can just call me 'Satou,' if you'd like.

Have you been here for very long?

I'd say probably not since we're stuck in a school and we can't do the normal shrine ceremonies. You'd be better off hoping for a Christmas party of some sort.

[She waves her hand dismissively however before she introduces herself and then asks that question.

Immediately there's a pause, and well-]

Define 'long'. But I've been here a couple of months.

[...maybe even longer, if I'm missing more than just a couple of memories, she thinks to herself.]

A Christmas party? You think?

[Her smile hides a pang of nostalgia. She would have liked to celebrate Christmas with the Yumeno family or Mikale, but she can work with this too. At the end of the day, Satou is excited to celebrate with someone. She doesn't even have to know them very well.

Before her enthusiasm can snowball into asking Inaba to celebrate with her, she learns something that snaps her back into focus.]

A couple months seems pretty long, mm. I don't know much about the afterlife, but I'd think people would have passed through sooner than that? How weird.

Maybe. Although honestly given this crew, I wouldn't be surprised if some of them either didn't know what a Christmas party was or thought that it'd be funny to make it a killer Christmas. Literally.

[Her shoulders sag as she finds herself sighing. Thinking of Christmas kind of makes her feel more lonely, and the fact that she'll be going through both her birthday and a major holiday without the people she cares about... kind of sucks, actually.]

Sucks that I don't even get to do the usual Christmas Eve stuff, but it's not that big of a deal, I suppose.

[Just shrugs it off like that in spite of her actual feelings. It isn't her first Christmas ruined, and she sure doesn't think it'd be her last. Not to mention that her birthday is coming up... man, that's a wild thing to think about. Do birthdays even matter in purgatory?]

Supposedly the whole 'passing through' thing has something to do with graduation. Not that I know the explicit details on how it works, exactly.

'Ususual stuff?' What stuff are you missing...

[Her voice trails off. Inaba's earlier words are beginning to sit in.]

Uh. By 'literally' you don't mean like... Christmas murder, do you? [No way!

Unless.]

Oh, I don't know - my boyfriend for one. Christmas Eve is the most romantic night, after all. Although I wouldn't want him here, anyway.

[Not in a place where people would hurt him. It'd hurt her too much.]

And yeah, Christmas murder. Since apparently people have so much time on their hands that they just love to resort to killing!
