It doesn't prove that hard to pinpoint the source, and he stops after just a handful steps before gesturing toward the door in the back, one that's hidden behind the spiraling staircase. If he didn't know any better, he'd liken it more to a cornered animal than the big bad wolf for how loud the rumbling grows, but the way it halts upon being given attention makes him question that line of thought.
But if not, then why is it choosing to stick to the shadows rather than immediately pouncing? It's odd, and the only alternatives he can think of is that it's either waiting for something or trying to avoid it. ]
