( it takes little time for him to figure out the idea — that he can't leave. what's really strange about it is that... others can? there's a distinct lack of physical barriers preventing him, but even so, it's as if the world itself is engineered to trap him here. it is... something that he makes note of, but after some time spent checking his options, it's also something he sincerely doubts will be easily solved. more importantly, what he notices is that there are some students who just... don't go home. as if they aren't concerned with even trying to leave, even as the building begins to empty out for the evening.

so it's them he decides to focus on, and the next person to pass him in the hallway is his first victim. with a wave to draw their attention, amami offers a smile. at the same time, his mind turns, trying to figure out how best to phrase this so he doesn't seem like he's crazy if he's wrong. lets see... first off: )

( another thing he finds to be of note as he wanders through the halls is the bulletin board. the rules, for one, are beyond bizarre — that's a puzzle that he's going to pocket for the time being. what he's really interested in right now is the class assignments. it takes him a few minutes, peering through the names recorded on the sheet, but it does strike him that not all of the names are unfamiliar. a few stand out: kaede akamatsu, shuichi saihara, kokichi ouma... if it's true... well, at least one of those names is someone that amami has reason to consider may be trustworthy in a situation like this.

this time, victim number two is anybody who happens to be near the front hall. turning to glance at them, he gestures to the sheet. )

Hey, you wouldn't happen to know Kaede Akamatsu, would you?

( or maybe your name is one of those he'd recognize in the first place. in that case, when he turns, instead of an amicable smile, you're treated with a momentary expression of wide-eyed surprise. )

( it's always a little sad to hear people ask about names- he remembers the disappointment when he had first tried searching for diona, and a few of the kids asking around for friends who went missing in the middle of the week. with a soft sigh and a glance at the list of students sidney looks, just in case- ah.

then it wasn't what he had feared. still, sidney shakes his head. )

I'm afraid not. But if she's on the list here, then she'll be around at some point.

Hm... Doesn't seem like that's a good thing, does it.

( this guy looking all sullen and sighing before he even looks to the list, and then shaking his head in such a way when he does — listen, it isn't as if amami wished her here, but if she's going to be anyway... of course he's going to investigate! anyway, that's not entirely the confirmation he was looking for. give him a minute, glancing back to the list and then to the other man again, and: )

How about Shuichi Saihara... or Kokichi Ouma?

I've seen them around, yes. They've both been here for some time now. I can't say I've had a lot of chances to speak to them, but they both looked fine the last I saw them.

Yeah, makes sense.

( he won't mention that they've presumably come from a pretty grim situation themselves, but at least these two seem to ring a bell of familiarity for the other. with that, amami can pursue it some. )

Some time, huh. That's strange... ( there's a pause, and he'll continue with some gestures to accompany his words. )

Saihara-kun, he's about this tall. Wears a hat, really quiet. Ouma-kun comes up to about here, checkered scarf, acts like a handful at times. That sound about right?

Yes, that's them... Although, I can't say I recall Saihara wearing any sort of hat. Then again, Miss Yashiro didn't always have that brooch of hers...

( given that it seemed more than familiar to her, it's possible that she simply... found it by some means within the school. given that they were supposed to have been here for some time, it'd make sense that potential lost items were around the building.

Sorry, I haven't introduced myself, huh. My name's Rantarou Amami. Saihara-kun and Ouma-kun were... classmates of mine, before.

( amami seems to be a bit older than most of the kids here- but if saihara and ouma are his classmates, maybe they're the same age? and he's just slightly more mature.

not that sidney's going to step back so easily, of course. he's a teacher, after all... regardless of the situation here. )

You'll run into them soon enough, but I believe Saihara enjoys the music room, if you go looking for him. Ouma... I'm unsure. He kind of does what he wants, I've noticed.

( it's not like amami knows, like, a lot about saihara, honestly — but he has noticed the way he tends to stick together with kaede. if they're close, it's only natural that he would gravitate towards the same kind of space as she does, and there's nowhere more suited to a pianist than a music room.

as for ouma, he guesses he'll just have to take the other's word for that one. anyway, sidney is, like, visibly older than him. by a lot, y'know? )

So, are you a teacher here?

Unfortunately, no. I'm considered a... 'repeat' student. But in my real life, I am a teacher- English, but I try to help where I can. This place doesn't take age into consideration... or anything else, for that matter.

Oh, sorry about that. Probably shouldn't jump to conclusions.

( kind of a shame considering what he was going for, but pretty interesting to know nonetheless! explains the younger girl, too; anyone can be a high school student if they just believe. )

I guess the English classes must be a breeze for you though, huh?

It's a reasonable one to make- and not completely wrong, but this place hates things like 'logic'.

Mm. I take my duties seriously, so I try to keep an eye on what's being discussed with all the classe. If you ever need anything, I'll do my best to help.

Hm... Well, I appreciate the offer, but I'm not sure if classes are one of the things I'll be needing help with.

( like, are we talking class sessions or class discussions — what he's trying to say is, that offer extend past study sessions at all, mister? )

( it sure is. this is a hellscape, he's not leaving kids to deal with that all themselves. )

When you emphasize it like that, it actually sounds a little ominous.

( you know, with his whole, deep, grown-ass man voice and everything. besides, nobody ever thinks of good things when you pronounce the italics in anything. )

What kinds of things do people usually need help with, here?

( because so far it's sounded like "hiding dead bodies" and "escaping the void," so amami wants to know what his actual options are. )

( still, that almost gets a chuckle out of him. he's not wrong, but shh. he means well. )

The younger kids have mostly needed someone to listen. Some, first aid when the nurse has gone home, or food made. Everyone is trying to be self-sufficient when it comes to surviving, but you can't expect people to shoulder such a situation perfectly all the time... If someone needs anything else, I'll do my best to step up regardless. I just wish I could do more.

( he's a humble father, doing his best in a murder school full of the kinds of children who've had to shoulder too much. there's... unfortunately only so much he can do, especially since he's also been poking around himself. )

Many of the people here are at an age where all I can do is make my support available, and trying to hover will just drive them away- perhaps into greater danger. Trying to consider that while keeping everyone safe is more of a balancing act than it should be.

Yeah. It must be nice for them to have someone older to lean on, but it sounds like you're taking a lot on yourself.

( which has its pros and cons, of course, but he's not marking sidney down as someone who can be trusted just yet. if he is, then it's a good thing for the kids he's apparently trying to support. the way he presents himself, it really does sound like he's doing what he can, it's just... y'know, you can't really know who someone is on the first meeting and all. so even as sidney speaks and amami's smile stays warm, he remains guarded, thinking through the words. )

If you don't rely on others too, you'll burn yourself out pretty quick. It takes a village to raise a child and all.

( as if he's one to talk. )

( frankly, he wishes he could take on more. he's died for innocents before. why not now? anything to get the kids back to their homes safely. )

Perhaps. But I'd rather not leave that for anyone younger to deal with.

he knows moriarty will try, at least for the kids he's taken a personal liking to. he knows sherlock will fumble but do his best. he knows clamor will readily do what he can for noah and any other kid who comes his way and lucifer has readily taken over cooking meals- he's not dealing with 20 something rowdy teenagers alone, thankfully. and when he needs to process things... well. he'll... cross that bridge when he stops ignoring the path to it.
