a) travels
• open — 05/19, 2nd floor, right wing
( it takes little time for him to figure out the idea — that he can't leave. what's really strange about it is that... others can? there's a distinct lack of physical barriers preventing him, but even so, it's as if the world itself is engineered to trap him here. it is... something that he makes note of, but after some time spent checking his options, it's also something he sincerely doubts will be easily solved. more importantly, what he notices is that there are some students who just... don't go home. as if they aren't concerned with even trying to leave, even as the building begins to empty out for the evening.b) find my way
so it's them he decides to focus on, and the next person to pass him in the hallway is his first victim. with a wave to draw their attention, amami offers a smile. at the same time, his mind turns, trying to figure out how best to phrase this so he doesn't seem like he's crazy if he's wrong. lets see... first off: )
Sorry, but do you have a minute?
• open — 05/19, 1st floor, bulletin board
( another thing he finds to be of note as he wanders through the halls is the bulletin board. the rules, for one, are beyond bizarre — that's a puzzle that he's going to pocket for the time being. what he's really interested in right now is the class assignments. it takes him a few minutes, peering through the names recorded on the sheet, but it does strike him that not all of the names are unfamiliar. a few stand out: kaede akamatsu, shuichi saihara, kokichi ouma... if it's true... well, at least one of those names is someone that amami has reason to consider may be trustworthy in a situation like this.c) wildcard
option one:
this time, victim number two is anybody who happens to be near the front hall. turning to glance at them, he gestures to the sheet. )
Hey, you wouldn't happen to know Kaede Akamatsu, would you?
option two:
( or maybe your name is one of those he'd recognize in the first place. in that case, when he turns, instead of an amicable smile, you're treated with a momentary expression of wide-eyed surprise. )
What a coincidence, I didn't think I'd see you here.
• open — anywhere, any time
( have an idea? feel free to throw anything else my way, or if you're unsure, you can hit me up via pm or atkagehira! )

i lied in the post we're on the 3rd floor now for Variety
( as a transfer student, he gets a free pass on not recognizing them. that's... what he's assuming. anyway, clearly that will give his ass away immediately, but it's fine. amami's carrying on without waiting for a confirmation, gesturing down the hall to an old man who has no place being in a high school unless! )
I actually forgot something in the science lab earlier, but it looks like they've already locked the door. Do you think you could open it back up for me?
wow I cant believe you'd lie like this
Unfortunately... [he quirks a brow,] I'm not in possession of any keys.
[Lucifer wears a knowing smirk now, arms folded over his chest. Since this kid is here after-hours after most of the students have trickled out, Lucifer assumes he's in the same situation — stuck with no way home.]
If you really left something in there, you'll have to wait for the faculty to come back tomorrow.
channeling the ouma-kun energy just for u
Oh, my bad. So you're a "transfer student" too, huh.
( the way amami says that, it's pretty clear that the definition of the word is looking maybe a little bit too flexible. he's very sorry for your loss, old man high school student, you deserve to smirk in a time of hardship like this. )
It's fine, I didn't actually forget anything. I noticed that I can't get in, and some others mentioned not being able to either, so I thought there might be something useful in there if we checked.

[The kitchen is open all the time. The music room is open all the time. One of the two has arguably more dangerous objects in it unless someone figures out how to drop a fucking piano on someone's head. So, the science room might not be locked for being dangerous, but instead be locked because there's some secret to be kept in there? Hmm...]
Well, I suppose there's something whoever or whatever is running this place doesn't want us to get our hands on. At best, it would be a clue or a way out of here. [There's a brief pause, and then,] My apologies. I didn't introduce myself. Lucifer.
[He holds his right hand out, waiting for Amami to shake it.]
no subject
Rantarou Amami. It's nice to meet you.
( and he'll take the other's hand in a proper handshake. whatever it is that qualifies a handshake as good, because amami is surely used to handing those out by now. in any case, that only lasts a moment, and with formalities out of the way he can loop back to the topic at hand. )
I was thinking something like that too. I can't get into the student council room or the right wing of the fourth floor either. The principal's office and student store are closed, but I guess they aren't as surprising.
( like, of course the principal locks their office when they leave, and if the store isn't open then why would the door be, but like... the kitchen is open, even though there aren't many if any staff left in the building right now. you'd think that would be the first room they'd close, right? though after a moment to consider it, it seems like a lightbulb goes off over his head. )
Wait, you guys have been here a while now, right? Were the other rooms locked too when you got here?
no subject
[It's clearly a point of frustration for Lucifer, who pinches the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger, letting out a sigh of irritation.]
The music room, home ec room, art room... all of that has been open the entire time. We should honestly thank our lucky stars the kitchen has remained open... ah, actually — some students reported that during spring break, when the school was closed, that the kitchen was locked and that they were all living on vending machine snacks.
[Lucifer genuinely doesn't remember that. He has a few false memories in his head and then blanks that he still needs filled in.]
no subject
( he was rooting for you guys — now the only accomplishment of yours he knows about remains the body in the pipes. because, you know, that was totally done by the transfers.
anyway, good to know as a frame of reference. given that amami isn't entirely sure just how much he can actually learn from talking about locked rooms though, he's going to shift the focus to another of lucifer's statements instead. )
When you say you "woke up" rather than arrived, and that the timeline is unclear, you mean... that you have different sets of memories, right?
( is the experience universal? because amami has some pretty complicated feelings around this, gotta say, and it'll be almost comforting if he's not alone in the experience. )
no subject
That's correct. I have conflicting sets of memories — those which I know to be true and those which I know to be false — but regardless of that, falling into the false sense of security that the false memories offer is incredibly easy. Frustratingly so.
[There's a pause as Lucifer carefully measures out his next statement, how much to share and how much to hide, before:]
For starters, I was previously on the faculty for a university of a sort before arriving here, but I also have a strange sense that I've been in this school for a while — something I almost certainly know is without a doubt, false.
no subject
( it makes sense — more or less adding up to the experience that amami shares. rather than the experience itself, it's the confidence with which the man discerns between the sets that he finds impressive. guess he's still pretty alone in his doubts, but maybe if this guy has so much conviction behind which set is which, he can share some of that with amami, too.
it's a little much to hope for, but with a serious, intent look in his eyes, he'll ask nonetheless: )
How do you tell whether they're true or false?
no subject
[His house is probably on fire, or already burnt down. Lucifer doesn't want to think about it further.]
If you think back to your experiences before coming here, assuming you can recall any of those memories, do you not find something odd? Something or someone you would never leave behind, for example.
no subject
I wouldn't say it's that I don't have anything like that. ( and he's clearly somewhat bothered by the suggestion; of course he has something like that. ) You're so confident in them being true, though. I guess it's true that it's impossible to have both memories occur at the same time, but...
( he grimaces, searching for the words to express his problem with the situation. )
If we know that at least one of our sets of memories is fake, I find it hard to believe we could have collectively imagined two sets of memories for ourselves on our own. Which would mean that something or someone had to put them there. They made us believe in them. In that case, don't you think that the way we all suddenly "remembered" leading completely different lives before this is strange?
( what he says is strange; what he means is suspicious. it just... does it really feel like this process of transfers "waking up" is something that occurred randomly, by mistake, unexpectedly? )

[He trails off. Magic is usually a foreign concept to humans, so he'll leave that point there. The other hypothesis is—]
Alternatively, it could be a case of hypnosis or other physical afflictions. Unfortunately, I'm less well-versed in that, so I will admit that my knowledge there is lacking. I've had amnesia before, but it was induced via magic, you see. I've never been hypnotized, as far as I'm aware. I'm not sure about you, or if you would know anything about such processes in greater depth?
[Lucifer's running hypothesis is that this place is affected by some sort of magic, see, and he's not exactly going to stray from that opinion unless sufficient evidence is given. Unfortunately when there aren't any realistic explanations for anything, magical explanations are his go-to, simply because of the consequence of his being.]

( it's not the certainty he's seeking, but it's better than nothing, isn't it? he still looks troubled though — to be in a situation like this not only once, and for all he knows, not even twice, it really takes a toll on someone. forms another a layer of doubt placed over top of what had already been a shaky enough foundation; while amami isn't going to let it stop him from taking steps forward, not being able to trust that you know yourself makes it difficult to know what you can trust beyond that, too. )
It's not that I know about them in depth, per se, but I can't say I don't have any familiarity with them at all. I guess that might be why I don't want to jump to any conclusions.
( about the trustworthiness of his own memories, that is, though lucifer can take that as he will. )
