( it takes little time for him to figure out the idea — that he can't leave. what's really strange about it is that... others can? there's a distinct lack of physical barriers preventing him, but even so, it's as if the world itself is engineered to trap him here. it is... something that he makes note of, but after some time spent checking his options, it's also something he sincerely doubts will be easily solved. more importantly, what he notices is that there are some students who just... don't go home. as if they aren't concerned with even trying to leave, even as the building begins to empty out for the evening.

so it's them he decides to focus on, and the next person to pass him in the hallway is his first victim. with a wave to draw their attention, amami offers a smile. at the same time, his mind turns, trying to figure out how best to phrase this so he doesn't seem like he's crazy if he's wrong. lets see... first off: )

( another thing he finds to be of note as he wanders through the halls is the bulletin board. the rules, for one, are beyond bizarre — that's a puzzle that he's going to pocket for the time being. what he's really interested in right now is the class assignments. it takes him a few minutes, peering through the names recorded on the sheet, but it does strike him that not all of the names are unfamiliar. a few stand out: kaede akamatsu, shuichi saihara, kokichi ouma... if it's true... well, at least one of those names is someone that amami has reason to consider may be trustworthy in a situation like this.

this time, victim number two is anybody who happens to be near the front hall. turning to glance at them, he gestures to the sheet. )

Hey, you wouldn't happen to know Kaede Akamatsu, would you?

( or maybe your name is one of those he'd recognize in the first place. in that case, when he turns, instead of an amicable smile, you're treated with a momentary expression of wide-eyed surprise. )

What a coincidence, I didn't think I'd see you here.

Well, I guess it can't be helped then. I don't really feel like spinning wheels on something like that right now.

( the windows kind of feel... less important. they're something he can come back to any time, more prepared, and amami's gotten what he wanted from the question anyway. right, because this guy is pretty clearly in the same situation as him. )

But you sound like you know how this place works — have you been here long?

[Ishimaru almost seems a little disappointed by that decision. He was looking forward to witnessing this stranger's resolve and seeing how far he could get through hard work.]

I suppose that I do know a number of things about the goings-on of this place! It... has been about two months now since I arrived here. Are you... ah, new to this school?

Yeah, I am. If you've been here that long, I'd appreciate your help catching up.

( but, considering this guy's initial enthusiasm, he feels kinda bad after taking his request back like that, so: )

And about the window, you said anything is possible, so you should know I'm not giving up. I just think that we should take a different approach, that's all.

Of course. I will be glad to address any questions you may have! I understand that this is a very confusing and unsettling situation...

[He perks up as the other boy makes that promise about the window!]

Ah, I see! I appreciate that resolve of yours, and I look forward to seeing your approach in action! After all, anything is possible through the power of hard work!

Well, we certainly won't get anywhere if we don't try — that's for sure. I'll do what I can to make it happen.

( whew, okay, he feels a bit better with that out of the way. sure, it's important to keep realism in mind with these things, but that doesn't mean he can just get others' hopes up and then drop them all heartlessly. and as for the matter at hand? )

First things first: I'm Rantarou Amami, and I guess I'll be in class 3-B now. How about you?

Exactly! Hold onto that resolve, and never give up!

[With a confident smile, he goes on to introduce himself, and he bows in greeting.]

My name is Kiyotaka Ishimaru, from Class 2-E! It is a pleasure to meet you, Amami-kun. I hope that we can get along!

Yeah, same here. Wish it could have been under better circumstances though.

Well anyway, I probably can't do much if I don't know the basics of. Sorry to make you spell it out for me, but is there anything you think I should know about this place?

Of course. It would be much better if we could meet in the halls of a normal school that we enrolled in of our own free will!

[Off in another, better universe...]

That is quite fair. I have already made you aware of the situation with the doors and windows. Simply put, we seem to be trapped here! Furthermore, the other students and faculty of the school seem oblivious to our plight. Most of them seem to be completely unable to understand that we are trapped here! So, we have to be careful in order to ensure our survival here.

Got it. When you say "careful"... exactly what are we "ensuring our survival" from?

( essentially: that makes it sound like there's some kind of danger, so what does he have to watch out for?

NPCs not understanding is one thing, but he's already checked out the kitchen and it seems stocked. there's that vending machine, too. sure, even if some luxuries are out of reach (for now), it seems like when it comes to the necessities, this place isn't lacking in them. )

[He frowns and looks down as he thinks on that.]

W-well, we have to be careful about our resources while we are stuck here. The amount of food available to us is better than when we first arrived here, but we should still be careful and ration what we can. There are also no designated sleeping quarters, so we have to choose places to sleep instead. ...Ah...

[He pauses, as the rest is harder to say.]

...There have also been several dangerous incidents within the school. Examples of violent acts among the student body. S-so, we have to be quite careful about that!

...

( this time, amami goes a little quiet. it isn't that he hadn't expected to hear something like that, but... maybe it's exactly the fact that he had. he pauses, thinking it over, and: )

Violent acts, huh... If what you're saying is true, Ishimaru-kun, then beating around the bush isn't gonna help anybody.

( his voice is still soft, but there's a seriousness to his expression that conveys the weight of his words, cutting straight to the point. like, he feels bad. he really does. this guy? clearly not cut out for a killing school life, but the fact is that between those stutters and pauses, and the place that he just came from, amami is assuming the absolute worst-case scenario. )

If you're serious about wanting to protect the student body, then the best way to protect ourselves is by knowing what we need to look out for. If I hadn't asked you about that specifically, would you have let me go on without knowing?

[Even having come from one killing school life didn't quite prepare him for this one... Rantaro's response makes him clam up and shrink back. Not just because of that demeanor, but also because it makes Ishimaru feel like he really did something wrong in his approach.]

Of- of course not! [He protests meekly.] I did not feel that it would be best to lead with a topic so frightening and depressing. That is all. I assure you that I have every intention to assure you to be careful! We have to stick together to look out for each other, until we find a way out of here.

( truthfully, he does feel a little bit guilty about the response he gets. it's clear that ishimaru has good intentions but, well, he's never held back when it's come to matters of survival before — he isn't about to start now. either way, he does feel obligated to do at least this much: )

( maybe he's just a little high-strung from the stress of being in this situation. again. )

I know you're trying to be considerate, but I think it's best to rip off the band-aid in situations like these. Though I guess that's just my preference, so... as long as you weren't going to avoid the topic, it's fine.

[Ishimaru nods along timidly.]

...Yes. I see, I see. So that is the approach that I should take. From now on, I will do my best for you, Amami-kun.

[With that, Ishimaru takes a deep breath.

And then he shouts out, with one fist balled.]

There has been murder within these halls!! And other acts of violence! There is also a cult among the student body! Please, carry yourself with caution!!

...

( well that's. hm. okay. he hadn't expected that kind of energy to go into it, and it wasn't really what he had been aiming for, but okay. alright. )

I guess that works too.

( most of the non-transfer students are already starting to thin out so, it's probably not a big deal. oh, but after a minute, it's like a lightbulb goes off over his head, and he'll tack on: )

You guys have a cult?

[He hopes his explanation is now satisfactory! Ishimaru frowns at the focus on the cult. He glances around and lowers his voice before he talks about it!]

Er... Yes. It seems that there is a cult of some sort among the local students. I do not know much about it, but it appears that they are of a satanic nature and use blood in their rituals. There are efforts among the transfer students to investigate them, so hopefully things can be figured out for the better in due time.

( this time, when ishimaru hushes his voice, amami knows better than to comment. with a serious expression, he crosses his arms to listen to the explanation. )

So you're already investigating. That's good. I guess I'll have to wait until the meetings you guys set up to learn more about that, huh?

( he pauses, thinks it over, and... yeah, he guesses he can live with that. )

[Ishimaru nods along.]

We have group meetings periodically. Everyone shares their findings at those times. You are sure to learn more details from such gatherings.

[He then pauses.]

I... I have been? I... succeeded in being useful?

( oh, that's... a little surprising. guess it makes sense in the context of how quickly he changed his tune on keeping the dangers hushed, but it still catches amami off guard for a moment when ishimaru looks to him for confirmation like that.

there's a moment's pause, but he doesn't let it stretch on too long, lips curving into a smile. )

Of course. Without you, I never would have heard about the cult. Nobody else told me that, see? So I'm glad we met.

( like a kid who wants to heart they did a good job, y'know? amami can't deny him that. )

Ah... Good! I am glad that I could help!

[Ishimaru says on a relieved breath. He's not sure if he's supposed to mention the cult so quickly, but this boy did make a point about not keeping dangerous stuff hidden... and mostly, he's glad that he was able to be truly helpful to the boy! Still, a little concerning that this is what he narrows in on!]

I am sure that there are plenty of other reasons to be glad that we have met! [He says with a bit of a nervous chuckle.] It, ah, has been nice to meet you, Amami-kun! Please, feel free to contact me if you need any more help, and keep your wits about you!

Yeah, it's not just that — but if it's being helpful ( useful is such an ugly word to use here, he thinks, ) then of course it's worth mentioning.

( you know, like there's nothing at all suspicious about being so interested in cult activity. )
