( it takes little time for him to figure out the idea — that he can't leave. what's really strange about it is that... others can? there's a distinct lack of physical barriers preventing him, but even so, it's as if the world itself is engineered to trap him here. it is... something that he makes note of, but after some time spent checking his options, it's also something he sincerely doubts will be easily solved. more importantly, what he notices is that there are some students who just... don't go home. as if they aren't concerned with even trying to leave, even as the building begins to empty out for the evening.

so it's them he decides to focus on, and the next person to pass him in the hallway is his first victim. with a wave to draw their attention, amami offers a smile. at the same time, his mind turns, trying to figure out how best to phrase this so he doesn't seem like he's crazy if he's wrong. lets see... first off: )

( another thing he finds to be of note as he wanders through the halls is the bulletin board. the rules, for one, are beyond bizarre — that's a puzzle that he's going to pocket for the time being. what he's really interested in right now is the class assignments. it takes him a few minutes, peering through the names recorded on the sheet, but it does strike him that not all of the names are unfamiliar. a few stand out: kaede akamatsu, shuichi saihara, kokichi ouma... if it's true... well, at least one of those names is someone that amami has reason to consider may be trustworthy in a situation like this.

this time, victim number two is anybody who happens to be near the front hall. turning to glance at them, he gestures to the sheet. )

Hey, you wouldn't happen to know Kaede Akamatsu, would you?

( or maybe your name is one of those he'd recognize in the first place. in that case, when he turns, instead of an amicable smile, you're treated with a momentary expression of wide-eyed surprise. )

( huh? he kind of... blinks at hajime for a minute, though there's still a smile on his face. don't mind him; he'll need a minute to understand these jamjar canon-point mechanics. more important than that is the fact that she's here at all! )

But yeah. Blonde, cheerful, likes to play piano, right? She's a friend of mine.

Or well... It was a little earlier in the month that she and I met, maybe a little over a week ago?

[His face scrunches up in thought a little bit to think back to that point, something close to concern. That void that showed up back then...]

It wasn't the most cheerful time, but she seems like a good person. And pretty enthusiastic about the piano, too. [Hinata can't help but smile a little bit at that.] This place throws a lot at us, but I'm glad you'll have a friend here.

[Nanami and Tanaka... Komaeda, even if it's complicated... Hinata's always grateful they're here.]

( yeah, that doesn't do anything about his apparent confusion, brows drawn together sheepishly even as the other clarifies what he meant. hm... well, there's something in the statement to keep in mind anyway, so he'll just pocket it for the time being. )

Glad, huh? You think it's a good thing?

I guess for us it is — someone like her is good to have in a situation like this.

[Hinata shakes his head a little at that, voice quiet when he speaks.]

...I don't think it's a good thing that any of us are here. But when you're in a place like this, locked in place with fear and death hanging over you... Having people you care about, and people that you trust, really does mean a lot.

[It's the only thing that kept him going before this place, so it doesn't surprise Hinata it's what he needs now.]

She seems like a really dependable person. I wouldn't have wished this on her at all, but I am glad I got to meet her.

but he respects it.

personally, he'd prefer to go it alone than to have to witness someone he values, or someone he likes, or even someone who just plain doesn't deserve it, end up alongside him in a place like this. no matter how comforting, it just isn't worth the cost. his expression seems distant for a moment... but he's only known this guy for, like, two minutes, and that's just amami's own preference, and it's not at all a lesson he would have anyone else learn.

so he plasters on an amicable smile. )

Yeah, she's one to keep an eye out for. If I'm glad for anything, though, it's that she's not here alone.

( if he thinks about it as him coming to support her, he feels less bad about it than if it were the other way around. )

[Hinata's expression goes thoughtful for a minute as he takes in that distant look. That's... Huh. It must be from something Hinata said, but he wonders if it's in a good or bad way.

But when Amami smiles, he returns it with one of his own. Maybe he's just overthinking it a little too much.]

Yeah... If nothing else, I think it's good you two have each other. I wish I'd met you two under better circumstances, but... That's something to look forward to whenever we get out of here, I guess.
