Detention Time

Legion was not the sort to spend their time in detention sullen and sulking, but the punishment still rankled at them as they made their way to the office for detention.

They had been trying to prevent needless death. However, they have been not only thwarted, but penalized for their actions.

They pick their seat basically at random, completely ignoring any faculty that might be there. They were making noises less akin to normal Geth and more akin to growling, low and with a rich undertone of something that might be rage.

The assignment grates on them further, though they do not complain as they get to work on their essay. Eventually they turn to their... ally? (Is it wise to label another as such?) and give her a brief nod.

"Greetings."

Mewtwo nods in return, though she looks a little puzzled at why she's here. They want her to write an "essay", whatever that is. She looks down at the paper, and then back at Legion with a questioning look.

After a moment, Legion shows her their paper. The essay is already about a paragraph and a half in. It's very bland, using exacting and laconic language. It is also very unapologetic and blunt.

We are aware that this punishment is a result of threatening a member of faculty, in an attempt to procure assistance in stopping a forced fight to the death. These threats were innapropriate, as clearly the faculty are unwilling or unable to assist in preventing students from murdering each other...

And so on.

"They wish for us to write about our 'wrongdoings'."

Mewtwo scoffs, flicking her tail. She's not going to apologize to anyone if she has anything to say about it. She gets up... and is overcome with this sudden urge to stay, and write that essay. She tries to shake off the feeling, but it gets stronger the longer she stands.

Eventually, she sits back down, picking up her pencil awkwardly. She looks angry.

(They watch, impassive.

Their headflaps ripple.)

Do you require assistance?

[She doesn't move for a moment, and then just, angrily nods.]

(And well, as unhappy as they are about this scenario, they don't actually have a whole lot to do other than work on essays, so pausing their own work to help their new ally doesn't bother them.

They set their own pencil down and come over to more closely examine Mewtwo and her work.)

[Mewtwo hasn't gotten very far, mostly because a pencil is hard to hold for her big paws. It's mostly just messy scribbles.]

(Her paws do appear rather poorly shaped for this task, yes.)

You are having difficulties with writing?

(Perhaps they could write for her, though they would need a way for her to communicate what she wishes to say...)

[Mewtwo nods, picks up the pencil, and it sits awkwardly in her hands. She tries to write "my hands can't hold this very well", but it comes out pretty scribbly. Legion might be able to tell what she's writing if he looks hard enough.]

(They're not as good at pattern recognition as Humans and similar organics, so it takes them several moments to parse, even with their super fast AI thought.

They figure it out in the end though.)

We are willing to assist you with writing.

(Their headflaps ripple.)

Are you familiar with sign language?

[Mewtwo shakes her head, and then tilts it curiously.]

It is the use of hand signals to communicate words and concepts.

(They hold up their own three-fingered hands, and sign their words as they speak them.)

It is not widely used, however, it would enable you to communicte with others who know it.

[Mewtwo looks at Legion curiously, and then slowly attempts to write the words "How do you use it?"]

(They sign and speak simultaneously.)

We will show you.

(Their headflaps ripple. They can't teach a whole language in one sitting, but...)

We will start with the alphabet.

(That will be useful for now.)

[Mewtwo tries to mimic Legion's signing, but she doesn't really understand it. She nods, eager for having any means of communication again.]

Affirmative.

(They'll go slowly, showing her each letter as many times as needed, and making sure she's getting each one right.

It helps that, like her, they're three fingered, and thus the version of sign language they use is suited to her hands.)

[It takes her a while, but she starts to understand. There's so much she wants to say, but it's difficult when you can only spell out one letter at a time.

So she signs the letters "thank you".]

Acknowledged. You are welcome.

(They chatter.)

Suggestion: dictate your essay to us. We will teach you more complex words and phrases as we work.

(Like, they can show her signs for her most commonly used words, and some other tricks and shortcuts unique to sign, and she can incorporate them into her dictation as she goes.)

[She bristles, and then tries to sign the words "I will not apologize."]

You will be denied access to the vending machines until your essay is complete.

(They chatter.)

A suggestion: you do not have to admit wrongdoing to apologize.

(A non apology, such as sorry your staff are so incompetent that even threats can't get them to take a fight to the death seriously, would also probably work.)
