( it starts out small. a need for comfort food, and a need for something heartfelt but silly and fun, something genuine and kind. ... and, well, she did find a weird. bootleg vhs set of her favorite movie series, hamster space wars. but the dorm is only barely furnished- and it's not like they can just go out and buy a tv or anything. honestly she completely doubts there's even anything beyond the woods. but she remembers a teacher playing the thing and other stuff in the first month of all of this.

it's so long ago...

but there's a television and a vhs player in the school. and nene... nene's tired and sad and is currently out of fucks to give, so at some point in the day, after everyone else has left, nene has returned to the school and, uh. "borrowed" both things. it's fine. they just have to get it back in by sunday evening. don't worry about it. like, it's definitely heavy but she's a tough cookie who tills soil and everything, and also sara and noah both witnessed everything and are accomplices by default, so they had to help carry things too.

(they were completely happy to help on both accounts, she asked very nicely.)

so the "borrowed" television is set up across from one of the larger couches, and the vhs on top of it. she had cookies in the oven, donuts and hot chocolate made and popcorn popped. the common room paintings are covered with sheets of cloth. all that was left was something cozy- but at this point, nene's made so many little cushions and blankets and even cozy pjs that that's super easy. all that was left was letting anyone who wanted to come know too. so at some point in the halls, nene walks down calling out: )

Cartoons in the common room! Bring blankets and stuff!

( and, so everyone knows what their characters are getting into: hamster space wars is a movie series about different factions of hamsters that have been trying for cross planetary peace for ages now, with a villainous faction having sabotaged the final negotiations so they can control the war from the shadows to make the most money and also get the most seeds (Very Decadent). the first movie follows the main hamster and his little group trying to escape the villains after having witnessed the sabotage, and are trying to avoid assassination and end the war for good. the sequels follow allied factions, with hamster galactic wars being the Thrilling Conclusion.

it's heartfelt. it's silly. it's very cute. nene loves it. )

Can't they just buy the seeds with the money, then? ...I guess if it's that much of a luxury good... bit of a weird writing choice, though.

[(It's because it's About Hamsters, Shin). This is nice though; just chatting back and forth about a movie. He takes another bite of donut as the hamsters discuss their next options.]

This is actually a movie series from home! It's my favorite. And the seeds are a vital good! Not only are they a prime source of food, they make more food! And all kinds of other stuff! Seeds are a big deal in the hamster space war universe.

( honestly though she doesn't mind. taking care of people... it. it helps. a lot. almost as much as just spending time watching a movie with a friend. )

[In this they are united... he's gonna make a small shuffle, as much as one can with a cat, as an implicit invitation to sit next, if she wants. Even if she doesn't mind... he'd like to do what he can.]

Enough to start wars over them... Wait, it's a series? [Okay, he can get behind that as worldbuilding, actually. They're still on the first movie at this point probably and he's already hooked, you've got him Nene.] How many are there?

Five, ending with Hamster Galactic Wars. I have... the box set!

( and she holds up a set of vhs tapes, blankly labeled- it took her a bit to figure out the movies and what order they're supposed to be in, but she did get it eventually! )

The last one came out um... w. Well, it was last year for me, but like... this place is weird. Time is weird. It gives me headaches.

[He peers over. They look like bootlegs... Old school. Ordinarily the fact they're apparently going to watch five movies in a row for this event would fill him with dread but right now it's just the same anticipation as when doing that normally at home.]

Ahaha... tell me about it...

[Time definitely gave him a headache and the headache was called Sara punching him for disappearing for a week.]

It was late March where I was... Then suddenly here it's July.

[He missed his 22nd birthday, on April 2. Actually, how old is he here now? The fuzzy school memories don't help.]

And the year... It was 2017, not the nineties. [Floppy disks and VHS... wild...] Hey... do you think this means you could get a Hamster Space War movie that hasn't come out yet?

Well, the fifth is supposed to be the last one... ... But it was also still in theaters, now that I think of it. ( honestly part of her has put going from early summer to spring has made her think time travel was involved. so... technically, she's got it? )

... I was taken from the start of summer- not summer break, that was coming up in a couple days. And the funny thing is... Hanako-kun, my friend? He's here too. He showed up months later... but to him, he was just a few days after when I remember being taken.

Strange... [He thinks about if he should mention it, but Sara knows Nene and it's not really anything confidential.] Someone I know came from later as well... but she arrived here a month before I did.

[SO THERE'S DEFINITELY SOME FORM OF TIME TRAVEL GOING ON. He's still enjoying the movie but also as Sara and now Subaru have discovered, if you give him the right puzzle it'll capture his attention... he's reining himself in a bit because this is clearly meant to be a fun time and not a thinking about the mysteries of the school time, but it is weird.]

Ahaha, maybe they'll make a spin-off, if it's that popular. [At the very least merch... not that that'll be a factor unless it mysteriously appears in Npc-kun's shop.]

( the last time she got involved with time stuff, she literally died. she got better and had no idea it happened, but like.

Maybe! There's a few anime series, but they're pretty minor.

[He's got you Nene. Once in a while he picks up on things... the fact that everyone in general could really use a break is amplifying it.]

Guess it'd be harder to tape all of those... you'd have to be a real fanatic.

[You'd have to religiously set the VCR to get all of them... and then you'd have however many boxes of tapes... that's if you caught them when they were airing... Shin you're throwing this stone in a glass house.
On screen the plucky band of hamsters had found proof of the sabotage... only for them to discover it's been stolen from them at a critical moment!]

Of course. That would have been too easy wouldn't it... [He doesn't know how long the movie is but... in his mind it's still a little too early for it to have been wrapping up.]

Mhm. I don't even know who made these ones... they just showed up one day, in my locker...

( which is... hhhhhhhh. it's a l o c k e r.... with a lock... only she should have the password to it... oh but one of the best parts of the first movie is starting up, so she's going quiet, kinda leaning on shin while she watches. )

[That's worrying... he's already squirreled away all his things in his dorm room but... the implications...

Nene leans on him a little and Shin stills, briefly glancing at her, and then leans a little in return, a pulse of weight in response as he looks back up with at the screen where it's revealed that the only hamster that could have done it... was one of them.

For the next while, there's only the sounds of the movie, the background noise of the others and the industrial purring of Lily May.]
