i don't want to survive, i want to live

Who: Yes
What: Movie Night + Slumber Party
When: 9/11, Saturday Evening
Where: Dorm Common Room
Warnings: A ridiculous amount of Fluff, probably

( it starts out small. a need for comfort food, and a need for something heartfelt but silly and fun, something genuine and kind. ... and, well, she did find a weird. bootleg vhs set of her favorite movie series, hamster space wars. but the dorm is only barely furnished- and it's not like they can just go out and buy a tv or anything. honestly she completely doubts there's even anything beyond the woods. but she remembers a teacher playing the thing and other stuff in the first month of all of this.

it's so long ago...

but there's a television and a vhs player in the school. and nene... nene's tired and sad and is currently out of fucks to give, so at some point in the day, after everyone else has left, nene has returned to the school and, uh. "borrowed" both things. it's fine. they just have to get it back in by sunday evening. don't worry about it. like, it's definitely heavy but she's a tough cookie who tills soil and everything, and also sara and noah both witnessed everything and are accomplices by default, so they had to help carry things too.

(they were completely happy to help on both accounts, she asked very nicely.)

so the "borrowed" television is set up across from one of the larger couches, and the vhs on top of it. she had cookies in the oven, donuts and hot chocolate made and popcorn popped. the common room paintings are covered with sheets of cloth. all that was left was something cozy- but at this point, nene's made so many little cushions and blankets and even cozy pjs that that's super easy. all that was left was letting anyone who wanted to come know too. so at some point in the halls, nene walks down calling out: )

Cartoons in the common room! Bring blankets and stuff!

( and, so everyone knows what their characters are getting into: hamster space wars is a movie series about different factions of hamsters that have been trying for cross planetary peace for ages now, with a villainous faction having sabotaged the final negotiations so they can control the war from the shadows to make the most money and also get the most seeds (Very Decadent). the first movie follows the main hamster and his little group trying to escape the villains after having witnessed the sabotage, and are trying to avoid assassination and end the war for good. the sequels follow allied factions, with hamster galactic wars being the Thrilling Conclusion.

it's heartfelt. it's silly. it's very cute. nene loves it. )

[Ishimaru smiles as Meng Yao joins him.]

I see, so this must be a very new experience to you! Personally, I prefer literature. That is what we typically have to write reports on! Book reports are a common assignment to measure if a student has read and understood the assigned material. It is unusual to apply such a report to movies, but I feel that it can be a good way to put some educational value into this evening!

Yes, it is. Well, I believe I've attended a sleepover before in this place at least once some time ago.

[ Over where Class-D was, more than a couple of months back. It's strange, how much time has passed since then... ]

But, watching a "movie" is something entirely new to me. I've no doubt I'll be able to remember it well, though when it does start, I wonder if I'll be able to do much else other than watch. [ He laughs a little. ] Regardless, book reports do sound like they'd be easier, if only typically you'd be able to easily flip back to a page if you needed to check back for something.

Though, I think in a way your idea of putting together a report based on a movie may be helpful in not just only an educational sense.

[ Hopefully someone else besides him will think so, however. He can easily see how it might not be received generously. ]

It must be an incredible opportunity, to experience a movie for the firs time as an entirely new experience at your age! [Even if it isn't exactly the most normal of movies.]

Indeed. It is easier to double-check on books, though I try to avoid doing that in order to rely solely on my knowledge. But that does give movie reports an unexpected edge in terms of difficulty! It will be a true test of how much attention someone plays during the viewing.

[His eyes widen.]

Ah, a value beyond education? Do you truly think so?

It certainly is one, yes.

Though, I think I personally have a lot less to worry about in terms of that than most.

[ Just because as long as he had his eyes on it, he'd be able to remember every single little detail...sometimes a curse, but so far a blessing as far as he's concerned. ]

Well, if you think about it, we're in a rather difficult position due to our circumstances. But I believe writing down aspects about the movie would be something that can help facilitate holding onto a good memory, right?

[ One more pleasant memory, among others. ]

Is that so? You must be quite attentive indeed! I am not surprised by that in the slightest, Meng Yao-kun. [He regards his friend with a confident smile.

And the smile remains as he hears out his explanation.]

That did not occur to me. What a splendid thought! It can help us all to hold onto such a nice memory. That- that would be very helpful! [Especially considering how brutal this place can be, how often it can bring him down to his knees. He needs to grab onto any and every source of comfort that he can find.] I must thank you for pointing out something so nice, Meng Yao-kun! In fact, I may have to make a note of in my own report.

[Because even aside from the film's content, the good times spend with the friends who are also watching the movie is also part of what makes a good memory.]

...Ah, thank you.

[ Meng Yao is definitely beaming at the compliment, which he can't help. He's always been easily receptive to praise of any kind. Moreso from someone he's gotten to know... ]

I'm glad that what I've said will prove to be of use to you, Ishimaru-xiong. I can't say I anticipated that it would to that extent, but it is the little things at times, isn't it?

Oh, and out of curiosity...what movies are you used to watching? I assume that ones about hamsters traveling through 'space' isn't the norm? Or is it?

[ ... It's also funny that he's learning quite a lot of things in general even beyond how movies look. Suffice to say, planetary fiction or the idea of planetary exploration and such isn't even a consideration in his time. ]

[Everything gets magnified in intensity for Ishimaru, and that includes seemingly minor things.]

Indeed! No matter how small, any good thought or deed is worthy of being appreciated!

As for movies... [He chuckles and shakes his head.] You are right that this is not quite an average film. It is the type of movie that would normally be aimed at children. In actuality, the amount of movie genres out there are as vast as different types of books. I personally prefer to watch documentaries, especially historical ones. Those are non-fictional accounts that often consist of interviews with experts, as well as any footage or depictions of historical events! They consist purely of facts, so they are easily the most educational type of movie!

...I think I'd might like to see a documentary at one point. Even if I can't say I'd know where to find those. I imagine if this place had some, it could be helpful depending on the information in it.

[ Come to think of it, he wouldn't even know what a 'movie' would look like in object form before being presumably put into play on the mechanism (...television) in front of them. Though, he'll continue to add something lightly. ]

I'm not surprised that's the type of movie you prefer, though.

[He chuckles slightly.]

I suppose that it's not hard to guess, considering the kind of person I am. I am sure that you would to watch them as well, Meng Yao-kun! They can certainly be helpful in educating you about topics outside of your own experience, with the help of audible and visual aids!

[He looks over towards the television.]

Considering that the television and VHS player came from the school, they must be available for the use of classes. Perhaps you can try to persuade a teacher to show your class a relevant documentary, and see if that is successful! I feel that it would be worth a try, Meng Yao-kun.

You'd be right in assuming so, of course. There is much I still have to learn, and I dare say it may be more than most in some cases.

[ But Meng Yao doesn't seem all that upset about that. It'll be interesting, picking up more information on how a world so far ahead of his may work.

Then there is the idea that maybe there might be something else of note to catch in those things. That being said, Ishimaru's idea grants him a thoughtful look. ]

...That's a great idea, Ishimaru-xiong—in fact I think I may have to express my thanks for the ingenuity. I'm sure at least one of the teachers would be amenable to that. Of course, I'll even let you know how it goes.

[It's not surprising, considering that Meng Yao is unfamiliar with much modern technology. But Ishimaru sees it as a good thing that he has so much to learn!]

Well, you sound like you are approaching it with the right attitude. It is good to have more things to strive to learn! And I know that you will do well.

[He's glad that his idea is going well with him, too!]

You're quite welcome! I have faith that it will work out. While I prefer learning from books, documentaries can be much more helpful when it comes to concepts that are entirely unfamiliar to you. Please, do be sure to keep me updated!
