↳ option one. [ 10/5, workshop, after school ]
- [The fact of the matter is that Inaba knows that her stuff still... exists. After all, she had the pendant that Taichi gave her on her person - although if she died, how is it still fine? She can't help but wonder that, just a little.
She also hasn't exactly... spoken much about the fact that she might have died in the school, or the specifics on what happened. Sure, there's a lot that she doesn't recall - blanks in memories that nag at her, a worry that she may not actually be 'Inaba Himeko'.
Especially when she can't prove herself. She was never close to anyone, after all.
But that's something for another time.
What's happening now is that she's trying to look for her laptop - she knows it existed, but doesn't know what happened to it. Was it gone forever, or perhaps...
And eventually she finds herself at the workshop; it's on the same floor as her classroom, after all -
And then she walks in, scours around a bit and, well -
Some people may hear a rather audible scream.]
What the hell?!
[.........uh.
Maybe that should be checked on?]

[She didn't really do anything on it at the school, which is like, the barest of reliefs, if you ask her.]
I had a lot of memories with that laptop, though. With people important to me.
[People that aren't here.]
no subject
Memories, huh.
[ That was probably important here. The happy memories would be overwritten with time, loved ones forgotten one feature at a time - their voice, their face, the little mannerisms, would slip away without constant reinforcement. It was always like that, no matter how much they promised to treasure each other. Ah, what a waste of time. ]
Hm, so lots of personal stuff on there? Sure hope nobody was rifling through it, ahaha, that'd be seriously creepy.
no subject
[That she wrote for her club, as the vice president. So she has a lot of fondness and attachment. But as for memories of things - Inaba knows it better than anyone else of just how fragile memories can be.
Better than anyone.]
Ugh. I'd like to hope not... I don't know if there any decent enough hackers here or if someone messed with the settings - I put a decently hard enough password on that thing. Wouldn't blame someone for going through it in a place like this. Given all the murder investigations, finding an unknown laptop is like "ah, something else to investigate!" Doesn't mean I have to like it, though.
no subject
[ Now, granted, that wouldn't stop him from doing it, but there was no point in pretending it was a morally sound decision. In the end, it was a mix of curiosity getting the best of people and a simple desire for self-preservation... But well, from the sound of it there at least hadn't been anything incriminating on there. ]
Hmm... Well, if it really got reduced to scraps, nothing to do but see if you can put Humpty Dumpty back together again, eh?
no subject
[She sighs, her shoulders sagging.
Honestly, she's just glad that she doesn't keep any of her personal stuff on her computers.]
Guess so. Don't know if we'd have the parts, though — we'd have to cobble up something together, but it might be workable.
no subject
Eh, I'm sure we can figure something out.
[ He bends down on one knee in front of the pile, picking up a part at random. He examines it for a few seconds before setting it to the side. Possibly useful, but not what they're looking for. He picks up a second, and tosses it to the side. Broken beyond repair. ]
There's enough junk in this room, that's for damn sure. You'd think somebody would've cleaned it up a little...
[ He grumbles, shaking his head at the mess of parts. ]
no subject
[Just saying that rather plainly as if it doesn't involve her in the slightest bit.]
If the computer can't be fixed, maybe something else can be built out of these parts. Hey, maybe we can invent the roomba in the 90s. You think we can get a lot of merit points for that?
[Oh my god. She's joking, of course.]
no subject
Ahahaha, I bet we could blow their minds with something like that, and I'm sure it'd fetch a good price~ Hmm, a normal one would be kind of boring though... I wonder what other features you could add? Ahahaha.
[ Look, he thinks the idea is hilarious, and it's not like it'd be difficult. ]</small

[Perhaps she shouldn't be contemplating this seriously and yet, here she is. A hand rests under her chin before she answers:]
Well, if you had two, you can make them into battle bots. I think there was this story I read once about battling robots. That's pretty common in SF stuff, right? Then you can make your own underground battle 'bot fighting ring, set up some gambling and tournaments and the like...
no subject
[ Neither of them should be seriously considering this, but Ranger seems absolutely taken with the idea. He lifts a few more parts, setting a couple aside with a hum.
Look, he needs something to work on. He reaches his free hand under the mask briefly, rubbing his chin. ]
Money ain't a thing here though, right? Whatchya gonna bet?
no subject
People can still buy things with their merit points. Snacks would be the best thing to do for this sort of thing, but... if people wanted to offer other things that have the same worth as actual money as a wager, then that'd be fine. But I have no plans on betting myself.
I just plan on being the dealer.
no subject
[ Ranger pauses in his work. He sets the part he'd just picked up back down on the pile. He slaps his hand down on his knee instead, turning his head to look at her, a glimmer of interest in his eyes now.
A laugh bubbles up in his throat, genuine amusement overtaking him for a moment. This place should be a breath of fresh air after being in the same facility for his entire life, but it's just as contained. It's an even smaller cage than the one he had previously been in, and with none of the sense of purpose. ]
Re-ally? You don't seem like the type... Hmmm, I'd peg you as the sort who likes to work behind the scenes.
[ It's not an insult, but a simple fact. She struck him as the sharp sort of person who would analyze the dangers of any given situation and try to avoid even the slightest whiff of it. The same cold be said of Ranger, but.. Well, he was used to being the face of an endeavor, and he's interested. ]
You'd need a front man, ahahaha~ If you're serious, you know, I've got some experience with this kind of thing.
[ Rio Ranger has joined the party! ... Too bad you didn't ask for him. ]
no subject
[There's a hint of something curious as she finds herself blinking rather curiously for a good few seconds. But she sees the way his expression shifts--after all, even with him covering his mouth, that slight glimmer of interest in his eyes makes her certain that while she may have said it as an offhand joke...
...well, she did think about a gambling circle when someone suggested it before. Although it sounds like that person isn't here, anymore.]
Is that really that obvious? I didn't think that it was showing on my face...
[She pouts a little, looking almost insulted although she knows that that wasn't the intention. Sometimes, you just play along with a thing that doesn't even exist for the hell of it.]
But a front man, huh... you'd really be willing to do something like that?
[There's hints of curiosity there, a silent question of 'but why, though?' hidden beneath the surface.]
no subject
[ But it's as close as he gets to a compliment. Ranger doesn't like humans on the whole, but he can at least have a sense of respect for those who were sharp and pragmatic. It wasn't bad, coming up with something like that on the spot. Human ingenuity really was something. Ahh, it's enough to make him jealous.
But he gives an affirmative nod. He can sense the question there, and responds accordingly: ]
Sure! Why not? You're either running things or you're participating, and I know which side I'd wanna be on.
[ Because, dangerous or not, the side running the show had more control over the situation. If things went wrong, well - that was just life. He gives a thoughtful little hum, eyes briefly rolling up as he considers how to best phrase the next phase. His gaze drops back to Inaba after a few seconds. ]
Besides, I'm used to this sorta gig. One person's gotta be the stage guy. It's got its benefits, you know.
[ Well, at least if one wasn't particularly concerned about the potential consequences. ]
no subject
[There's a drip of something dry in that one-worded question that hangs in the air for a second before she waves her hand dismissively in a fashion that's meant to be nonchalant.]
Well, whatever... it doesn't matter, I suppose.
[Or so she says, but morbid curiosity gets to her. She can't help but actually think - it's what she gets, she supposes, for being that kind of person.
The girl who, for the longest time couldn't trust anybody.
Not people who she called her 'friends'. Or her family.
Always being afraid of something did that to someone to the point where she just wound up picking on the habit of analyzing the people around her, the situations around her, everything.
But she's not like that any longer. Yet - bad habits don't die off that easily, and neither does her curiosity. That's something she'll shelve for a later date; something she can remember for later in case things went awry.]
Well, it's not like either side is bad. [Although there's certainly more risk being on the running side of things.] But obviously I wouldn't put my neck out there for this sort of thing. The less people can figure out who's behind the curtain, the better.
[For multiple reasons that she could list on her fingers alone.]
But it has its benefits...?
[She can't help but arch a brow at that, once again curious. It isn't as if she hadn't thought about what those were herself, but given that he said that he was used to this sort of job, he probably has a different perspective on what those are.]
Well, I suppose that's true. But it's not like I'm paying you or anything like that.
[And then she grimaces for a second, hugging herself in feigned disgust.]
Unless this was your plan all along? You wanted to get something off of me?
no subject
[ He feigns confusion to match her feigned disgust, lifting his eyebrows, but there's a tinge of amusement in his voice. ]
'Course I did! I wanted you to be the other half of the equation, 'cause I can't hit both sides at once... Well, actually, I guess I could, but I don't wanna... Oh, did ya mean other than that?
[ He says it as though he didn't know. He clearly did. ]
Nope~ [ He draws out the word. ] Nothing at all, ahahaha! There's nothing I need to get out of this. But I'm bored, it sounds interesting, and I can't get anything out of it if I'm not involved. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
[ Ranger holds up one finger for each point that he makes. He doesn't need anything from her, but he's certain he can get something. As to what that something is, he hasn't decided yet, but there were plenty of hidden gems in those kind of higher risk situations, but there were different flavors of power and control tucked away as well.
Then, letting his hand fall back down and pushes himself up fully now, sizing her up. They were good questions. That distrust was good. He would've walked away now if she hadn't even be capable of that much. They needed to watch each other, they needed to have distrust for each other, but not so much that it would be ruined by an egotistical need to kill before one was killed. ]
Besides... Not getting anything is fine by me, 'cause I wasn't planning giving anything in return. So, we can have an equal partnership. You got any problems with that?
[ The wording is rude, but while his tone remains light, there's a sharper edge to it. It's a serious answer for a serious question. Ranger was direct and to the point, and it was always preferable to expose any issues at the start. But he does study her carefully, similarly gauging for a reaction. Even if she backed out now, it was always worth keeping in mind for the future. He's used to working in a pair, and Ranger likes smart, pragmatic people. He likes people who can be honest about that. ]
no subject
[Even if she has no plans on doing 'murder' or 'death' as part of those stakes; while it'd be interesting, in a morbid sort of way, to see who would get the merit points for people gambling their lives and losing them, she just... isn't that kind of person that would perform something so cruel.
Sure, she's doing this to see if she can dig information by having something more lax - people were always more likely to spill things in those sorts of environments, after all, it'd be easy.]
But you're right about that. If it all fails for whatever reason, then that's that, I suppose. Although I guess I can also go "what's the worse the staff can do, expel me?" [There's something dry about that joke, because it'd be nice to actually be able to leave the school and face that sort of consequence, but she has her doubts that'd happen. And the staff seem less likely to murder - at least, that's how it feels when all the murders have been done by the students.] An equal partnership, huh...
[With a free hand, she instinctively reaches to the magatama bead on her necklace, a thumb and index finger rolling it idly in thought.]
Yeah, that doesn't sound bad. It's been a while since I got to do anything serious, and it'd be a good change of pace between people being ridiculously stupid about murder. People need to be ridiculously stupid about other things, too.
[She says that so nonchalantly that it's almost comedic. And Inaba herself is rather straightforward, too.]
I think having the robot fight can be fine as a monthly event and then space it out with some other activities throughout to profit off of it and see how people react. And there wouldn't be too many messy rules, either. Maybe borrow something from that one movie...? "You don't talk about gambling club." Along with prohibiting violence... since that's what the robots are for. Beating each other up in a brawl because you lost a gamble might be entertaining, but it might keep people from returning if fighting constantly happens.
[She may have actually been thinking this out for a bit, although it may also be that the gears in her head work pretty quickly.]
And we'd need a space for it too... the auditorium would be good given how big it is, but it'd be bad for secrecy. So I guess one of the classrooms will have to do.
no subject
Ah, her style of communication really is refreshing. Direct and to the point. That's just the way he likes it, being a person who looked to resolve issues as swiftly as painlessly as possible. He hated idiots who meandered, or who couldn't easily pick up on new concepts. When she finishes, he gives another approving nod. They were all good ideas. It was the perfect skeleton of an idea, although he would need a little while longer to ponder the concept of stakes. It had been death in the Majority Game, but in that case it had served the distinct purpose of weeding out any participants who were unworthy of reaching the next stage of the game - it was a pruning tactic. There was no need for such a thing in this case, and at any rate it would only serve to complicate matters. There would be far too many complaints.
He rocks a little more, processing everything, before he finally offers his own thoughts: ]
Ahahaha! You're right, people around here do need other things to be ridiculously stupid about. That's not a bad plan. We could probably wrangle something together for other activities. We did attractions back home... You know, really spruced up, interactive versions of the kinds you see at arcades and theme parks. I dunno about all of them, but I think there's a few that could be converted into something that could be useful here pretty easily.
[ Though having to remake all the parts from scratch would be its own kind of hassle. Still, in for a penny, in for a pound, and so long as the correct parts were present he could wrangle something together. If he took out some of the flashier (and more fatal) bits, it'd make it nice and easy. Ranger runs through ideas on which ones might be good, what modifications would need to be made, how much is feasible without being too overt... ]
Not talking about it, not killing each other... Hmmm, I'm not big on cheaters either, ahahaha! Those are probably the only three that're really needed, everything else is just gonna depend and get made up on the spot. I can't say I care if anybody's got a problem with it, but y'know, as long as it's kept low key you shouldn't get too many complaints.
[ He's realistic about that, at least. Things never went quite as intended, and situations were always messy, especially with such limited data on how things would proceed. It was easier to let things go and to pass judgment as needed. Aside from that, word about what was happening would eventually get around (rumors spread fast, no matter how many rules you set,) but that would be something to deal with at such a time as it became a problem.
Still, he's glad that she's approving of the set up thus far. It was a project that he could sink into, and something that Ranger had desperately needed up until this point, and all the better if he could find a person who was willing to coordinate the specifics with him. As a final note, he adds: ]
Are there any classrooms that aren't used often 'round here?
no subject
[While she's sick and tired of murders because she does, in fact, think that it's morally wrong, she also thinks that it's getting awfully old. She's been gone for just a few months and one of the first things she learns about within a couple of days is that someone just decided to off a bunch of people.
And was it really worth it?
They better hope that it was.]
'No cheating', huh? Personally, I'm always up for games where if someone who does get caught cheating loses their entire bet automatically. [Her wording there is very specific there, naturally.] But whatever complaints come, I'll deal with them. After all, that's just life.
[Which is ironic, considering. But something that Inaba was always good at coming up with were on the fly solutions and flying at the seat of her pants. But with that being said, they had to come up with a location...]
It'd be happening after school, so let me see-- [She takes out her notebook and opens it up, taking a glance at her notes.] There's a club in 3-A and 3-E. 3-B is out because of our spider problem, not to mention there's a bunch of us there, and then there seems to be clubs in 2-D, 1-A, 1-B, and 1-C. Going off that... 2-A might be the best option since going by the map it's the clubroom closest to the bathroom and stairs, but I don't know how many of us frequent that clubroom after classes, especially since we have dorm rooms now. I might need to check the class rosters, too...
no subject
So then, that just left wrapping up the remaining details. He checks his his memory for which of the kiddos in the room, but he hadn't paid much attention to who hung around in what room past what he needed to, and so he supposes that he would need to correct for that. Even aside from this, it was always better to have more data than less. To that end, he notes the fact that the dorm rooms were a new addition... Then, there was more to it than they currently had? He tucks the question away for now. It wasn't quite relevant yet.
He flips the mask to a one with a cat face. ]
So either way, the jury's still out on that one?
no subject
[That is, if this is supposed to be imitating an Japanese school.]
Worst case scenario, we just screw getting permissions and we just steal a classroom.
[As if it wasn't a 'secret gambling ring' in the first place...]
no subject
[ There's a hint of genuine amusement. As he thought, this one is worth having around. He grabs his elbow with his free hand. ]
Well, waiting ain't a bad idea anyway. It'll take a bit to put everything together, and even if you get that done, you wanna think stuff like that through pretty thoroughly before you actually throw them out there.
[ The ideas were the easy part. But no matter how detailed or simple the initial plan, there was always a need to make adjustments. It was important to try it out, to find all the ways that you could break it over and over again.
But that was fine. Perfecting an idea that was the fun part. ]
no subject
[She likes having things going completely to plan, but adjustments are things that she knows she'll just have to inevitably do.]
No need to rush headfirst into things, and 'sides--something else might come up and I'll have to rethink my plans anyway.
no subject
[ It's hard to tell if he's joking, given that the blank expression on his face and the mask that he hides behind, but really it wouldn't surprise him. There were some damn stupid people in this place.
Though there's plenty of other things that could lead to it, he doesn't feel the need to touch upon every small one. He gives a thoughtful little hum, tilting his head back slightly as he considers. Considerations of how to put it together aside... ]
Hey, aside from snacks, what else is there of value here?
no subject
[Inaba puts her irritation in with cursing because she is so very much done with a lot of things. Bullshit aside, however--]
'Merit points', but it's not as if you can give them freely to other people. I suppose you can use them to buy things, I hear there's a school store now, but I haven't gone to visit it and its owner yet, but there might be physical items of value there, specifically. And obviously, information is always a valuable resource.
