One meeting after school, Nene announces that with access to the school rooftop granted, there's been a delightful discovery: rooftop garden plots! The first time she leads them up there- careful as they cross through the fourth floor's right wing, because it feels wrong to pass through a graveyard so carelessly- it's to survey what needs doing- it's been left alone for a long time, after all, and she'd hate to find damage in it too late. Once everything is correctly examined, Nene puts together a list after consulting Lucifer a little, and announces that on the following Sunday this September, because I definitely didn't die from the sleepover and stuff last month, the club will work together to fix up the rooftop gardens and plant some fall vegetables that the shopkeeper helpfully provided seeds for. As a matter of fact, they even made a special request, and Nene will see it through.

Onions (red, yellow), Garlic
Root Vegetables (beets, carrots, radishes, turnips)
Leafy Vegetables (spinach, lettuce (variety except iceberg, which i have a grudge against), cabbage)

It's time to get to work! (Thankfully, cold drinks are also prepared and hauled up, as well as plenty of rice balls and other snacks.)

( the sound of his voice has nene perk up almost entirely- september... she's tired, and embracing her life as a liar if it means people won't worry about her. but hanako? he'll always make things so much brighter. so he'll get a genuine smile while she tugs him over to one of the plots. )

You're just in time, we finished cleaning up! Look, look, I'm going to plant a row of carrots here-

[ As if he didn't time his entrance right after the bulk of the boring work is done. He follows easily enough, a little crouch down beside the plot so he can hug his knees and watch Nene do her thing. ]

He~h... Are you starting from seeds for this too?

[ What does a carrot seed look like... For all the balance between the dead and te living he tries to keep, he doesn't really ever deal with the birth or growth of anything. ]

Mhm, mhm. We're right on time to plant them, so unless something goes super wrong they'll be perfect for harvesting before winter!

( as she talks, she shows him the different packets... and carrot seeds are surprisingly very small! and a little curly, wild. but she'll let him hold a couple, before she starts the planting process. after a moment, she points to a designated hole. )

Hey, hey, Hanako-kun, you try! These will be yours!!

[ "unless something goes super wrong" okay so the rooftop gets added to the list of places Hanako has to haunt to make sure nobody messes with Nene's carrots. Especially when she's working so hard at growing them, and seems like she's having fun too— excited, confident, because this is the area where she shines. ]

...huh? Planting them?

[ He's not even sure he wants carrots. It's a garden to feed people who need it, and he'll probably only eat it if Nene bakes it to ...idk carrot cake donuts or something.

He looks down at the seeds left from holding duty in his palms. It's just dropping everything into one hole, right? ]

( nene nods rapidly, almost bouncing where she stands. )

You've never gotten to do something like this, right? So... let's plant something together! Put a couple seeds into the hole, and then cover it with dirt.

( she's rather insistent on this... and... well. if he's spent so much time around death- even here in a murder school purgatory- then. he deserves to have something come to live at his hand. it's probably never happened before. )

[ It hasn't, and— like an all-powerful supernatural out of his element, or a kid who's never planted anything before in his life— he opens his hand over the hole, pushes soil on top of the seeds, gives the mound a little pat and crouches there expectantly.

... ]

Hey, Yashiro. How long does it take for carrots to grow?

[ How long is he going to have to sit here on guard duty making sure nobody messes with their plant ]

( nene watches his every movement with a bright look in her eyes, a warm grin- and when he pats the soil and then seems to expect it to grow almost instantly, she laughs, bright and airy like months of this hell haven't happened. )

It can take up to 80 days... but I get the feeling we'll have good growing conditions!

( does she have anything to back that up? no. but still. but it's theirs- so... so it'll go well. )

80 days?!

[ "up to" means like... maximum, right? he doesn't want to be here 80 days, let alone have nene be here 80 more days ]

Only at the maximum! It probably won't be that long...

( but she moves on to the next little hole for some seeds, gentle and serene and probably the most at peace she's been in a long time. yogen full of death, but garden... garden warm and full of life... )

[ Probably...

He's not sure he'd have the patience for it, even if he's hung around for years and years in the same place. Watching Nene makes him content enough, watching her do her thing, quiet like he wants to say something but doesn't want to interrupt so he stays quiet. ]

When we escape... you'll have to watch us garden again, back home in the court yard.

( because this is before the equinox, before she learns the truth of everything- when 'home' still feels like an option. )

...Sure. You and your friend, Aoi, right?

[ Somebody save Nene from a timeline with no ghost bf and no bff ]

( no ghost bf, no bff and also she's dead... that was yogen before the summoning.......... for real though if aoi showed up nene would bawl her little heart out and she's already doing that enough honestly. )

Mhm! ... I wish you two could meet properly. You two are both so important to me, after all.

( but hanako will always be on one side of the glass, and the rest of nene's most important people will be on the other- and she can't keep both forever, try as she might. ... she doesn't want to think about that now. )
