One meeting after school, Nene announces that with access to the school rooftop granted, there's been a delightful discovery: rooftop garden plots! The first time she leads them up there- careful as they cross through the fourth floor's right wing, because it feels wrong to pass through a graveyard so carelessly- it's to survey what needs doing- it's been left alone for a long time, after all, and she'd hate to find damage in it too late. Once everything is correctly examined, Nene puts together a list after consulting Lucifer a little, and announces that on the following Sunday this September, because I definitely didn't die from the sleepover and stuff last month, the club will work together to fix up the rooftop gardens and plant some fall vegetables that the shopkeeper helpfully provided seeds for. As a matter of fact, they even made a special request, and Nene will see it through.

Fall Seeds:

Onions (red, yellow), Garlic
Root Vegetables (beets, carrots, radishes, turnips)
Leafy Vegetables (spinach, lettuce (variety except iceberg, which i have a grudge against), cabbage)
Snow Peas, Snap Peas
Shopkeeper's Request: Mung Beans

It's time to get to work! (Thankfully, cold drinks are also prepared and hauled up, as well as plenty of rice balls and other snacks.)

Fresh grown vegetables are the beeeest! At home, we had a nice big plot for all kinds of veggies, and we grew flowers and succulents in the classrooms.

( she wonders, briefly, if he ever got to see my neighbor totoro... the scene of the girls picking vegetables from the garden and getting to eat the fruits of their labor, the simple joy of living... she thinks he'd enjoy it, actually. )

A lot of these were chosen because they should be able to grow quickly. We've only got so much time before winter... I dunno how that'll be in a place like this though.

That sounds simply splendid! I wish that my school would have thought of growing more plant life in classrooms. It would have been quite pleasant, and it would be an effective way to strengthen students' diligence and morals!

[He might have seen it when he was young, but he barely remembers it now...]

Good thinking, Yashiro-kun! I should have expected you would figure out the best ones to choose to suit these conditions. I certainly hope that it will not be a harsh winter, but it truly is hard to predict how things will go in a place like this... [He tightens a fist in declaration while a sponge is in his hand, inadvertently squirting a little bit of soapy liquid around him.] Rest assured, I will do my best to be vigilant and keep an eye on these plants!

Mm. Eventually, in my homeroom at least, we'd take turns in pairs. But Aoi-chan made them bloom better than anyone else. And everyone loved her, so they always made sure to do their best with the class plants too.

Ah- some were suggested by others, like Sakasaki-senpai! Some of these, I think we should try and preserve but the rest will be good for the season.

( she has a few ideas for hearty, filling meals for the winter. it's just a matter of getting to that point, she supposes. )

How fascinating! It certainly sounds like it worked out well in your homeroom, and it sounds like quite the team-building exercise, to boot! It certainly is quite helpful to have a good role model to follow and inspire when it comes to this sort of thing. [It sounds like her Aoi really lead the class to be diligent with their plants, and Ishimaru appreciates that.]

I see. I am glad that you received the advice that was needed for this undertaking! I am also quite willing to help with any preservation efforts when the time comes! [But right now, the focus is on clearning!]

( role model... she'll let him think that. really, the guys just wanted to impress aoi so they could get a date. it didn't work, of course. especially not with akane's... everything. but yeah, there's a nicer interpretation and she'll let him keep it. )

Aoi-chan is really admired by a lot of people- if you ever get to meet her, I'm sure you'll see why.

( and isn't that a nice thought, her friends here getting to meet her friends from home? a peaceful ideal where everything works out. shame the meeting in a few weeks is going to ruin that thought. still, nene just beams and traps ishimaru in a hug at his admittance, bright and warm as always. )

How interesting. Well I certainly hope to have the opportunity someday. [She must be diligent and hardworking, Ishimaru is sure of it! And a friend of Nene's is a friend of hers.

But then, Ishimaru is caught off guard by the sudden hug and admission! He practically freezes in place, feeling both surprised and warmed by the hug.]

I am?! [He gasps gently.] Y-Yashiro-kun... Have I truly earned the title of 'best friend' in this place? I did not know... that I had earned such an incredible honor! [He doesn't think anyone's ever called him a best friend before.]

You always try really hard, and you've helped me when I was sad... and I've known from the very start that I can count on you to at least be there when things are going bad. So... yes!

( yes they're both busy- but nene always feels the room is a bit brighter with ishimaru around. of course... some might say he burns a bit too brightly, but that's their own opinion.

Yashiro-kun...

[Ishimaru sniffles.

He just stood within the hug initially. He thought it might be impolite to hug her back while his hands were still a little wet, but now with the rush of emotion, he just wraps his arms around her!]

Thank you so much for such kind words!! Y-you always do your best as well, and you carry on with such a bright smile that is a light in this place! I am honored to be 'best friends' with you, Yashiro-kun!!

( thankfully, the jacket she wears protects her- or ishimaru might hear the tell-tale sound of her scales coming into existence. but there's nothing but hugs and mutual friendship here! and nene knows it's been a long time coming, because they clicked so well so early. ... it feels like so long ago. )

[It might be the first time that Ishimaru's had a hug like this. In any case, this hug is enjoyable and comforting in its purity! And it helps him to feel a little more alive, to be connected with a friend in this way.]

...Ah, is that okay? Is it really alright... [He pauses, and with a smile.] ...Nene-kun?

Yes, that's perfect, Kiyotaka-kun!

( and to accentuate her delight, nene subconsciously bounces where she stands, grinning brightly. but then she pauses, because they were in the middle of something. weren't they? oH RIGHT cleaning. )

Is there anything else you need for this area?

[How adorable! A goofy grin is left on Ishimaru's face. He's actually not sure when he last smiled this widely? In any case, Nene's words get him back on task! He takes a moment to overlook the area he's cleaning, thoughtfully.]

Hmmm... No, I think that I have everything I need to carry on! You brought me the last necessary items - the fresh bucket of water, and the supportive inspiration that comes from your smile! Nene-kyn, I now feel fully ready to go all out for the sake of this garden!

[He duel wields sponges as if prepared for battle, giving each one a dramatic squeeze before he dives in!]

( sometimes you are two earnest, sunshiney dorks and your very friendship is healing. i hope everyone around them is also being healed now, even if they may not know why. )
