( ... once again it's a battle between responsibility and self-care, because ughhhh, now this is just feeling like a drag. after a moment of debate, she writes: )

i think i need a break or i'm gonna just wear myself out. but if you're okay with trying later, would that be good?

( that wouldn't be too bad, right? unless he's busy...

of course, nene has no idea what he thinks about this sort of thing anyways. even being thanked- it's natural to her, even if he's not human. not that she seems to care... but given that she's an absolute supernatural apologist, maybe that's not surprising. )

[ It's still odd to him, but he's started to adapt a little to how quickly people burn out. It's not quite like his former co-workers, who would burn out only after hammering at a project for long bouts of time. But the same sentiment applies regardless of length, so he nods. ]

I don't mind. There's no point in continuing if you're not able to focus on it.

( nene nods, because ultimately that is the problem here. focusing is hard... oh, but that wasn't him moving the goalposts, was it? ... eh. she'll live. setting everything aside, nene idly rewinds the music box as the song comes to a somewhat abrupt halt. it's instinctual at this point. after that, she writes again. )

have you had a good day today?

( it might seem like idle chatter while she rests after studying, but its genuine. she wants to know- is he doing good? is he going to be okay with the exams? )

It's been fine. I'm used to more advanced stuff, so all the work here is pretty easy.

[ He considers for a moment, then suddenly - ]

Ah, I promised I'd give you something, didn't I?

does it get boring?

( nene pauses for a moment- he did, but she wasn't sure if he meant the entire set of questions, or just the one, so she hadn't wanted to bring it up and come off as greedy. but he remembered, so she nods. curiously, she looks over at him. )

Yep, the work itself is pretty boring, and the lectures are pretty bad too... Well, I get merit points for it, so I don't really mind.

[ And He doesn't really need the merit points for much, but he likes to hoard them up for when the opportunity to spend them presents itself. Aside from that, there's always a bit of satisfaction in seeing high scores and being praised.

He goes over to his corner now and kneels down, pulling out a small box out from under the bed. It's not wrapped, since it was really just intended to keep things in one place. He pops it open and digs around a little before retrieving the items he's looking for. It's a little difficult to hold in one hand, but fortunately he can manage well enough, and so he'll return and offer a crochet bunny couple. One of them is cream colored, with floppy ears and a pink, buttoned scarf. The other is a light brown and dons a blue scarf. He'd wanted to make something cute, as much because it seemed to fit her aesthetic as his own. ]

These are for you.

[ He pauses, waiting eyes flicking up and down as he waits to see if they'll be approved of. ]

( she pretends that she doesn't see the box, even though they all have one or two at this point, because she doesn't want to snoop. snooping is rude after all. she does scoot a bit closer to the edge of the bed though, swinging her legs down as if she's about to stand up.

oh- oh those are so cute...? and then ranger holds them out for her and it takes her a moment- up until just before he says something- to realize that they're for her. ... holy crap?

gingerly, nene picks them up- they're so soft!!- and stares at them with wide-eyed excitement that then gets turned onto ranger as she looks up at him in absolute awe and bewilderment. yes, these are some grade-a Starry Eyes, matched with a slowly blooming smile she couldn't contain if she wanted to as she holds them close to her chest.

congratulations ranger, you've made a nene very happy! )

[ It's the reaction he was hoping to get, but even so, he's a little surprised by the enthusiasm of her response. He glances away for a few seconds, embarrassed but pleased enough with this outcome. Ranger always does his work perfectly, but that perfection was little more than an even match for the expectations set for him, and those were tasks far more complex than this one.

It's nice to get this sort of reaction every once in awhile. ]

Ahaha, do you like 'em?

[ There's a sheepish little laugh. He's not really sure how to handle that. ]

That makes it worth it then.

[ The time and effort spent making them that is. ]

( nene nods enthusiastically- okay, maybe a little too enthusiastic, her head hurts a bit now but its absolutely worth it in her eyes because how else is she going to convey how much she adores these bunnies? checkmate, imaginary judgmental crowd in her head.

using one arm, she holds them close to her chest while she drags the notebook and pen back over to write. )

( she is going to smile forever-- ohhh wait until she shows noah!!! where should she put them at night? there's so much to consider in her stuffed animal nest now... but that's for later, there's way more important things at hand! )

did you make them?

[ It might be a little too enthusiastic, but it's nice to see. It really does make it feel like a worthwhile endeavor. Anything given to him was precious, but he has a special place for the stars decorating his bit of the room along the a bottle of stardust that he keeps in his pocket, and so he had hoped to elicit the same response.

Her smile is kind of cute, he thinks. Ranger can't imagine being able to smile that brightly, and there's just the faintest pang of jealousy that comes and goes, overwritten by satisfaction.

He nods once. ]

Yeah. There's not a lot to choose from here, so I figured I'd just make something. I like hands-on projects like that.

[ Everything from engineering to crafts, really. ]

( nene looks at him with absolute awe because how is her... ah. what are they? friends? roommates, and roommates only? ... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... how is he so talented though? the starry eyes are surely upgraded and she's absolutely delighted regardless of that moment of doubt. )

is it like knitting? or something else??

[ She really is too cute... For a person who's used to doing well at everything and finds this to be perfectly natural, it's kind of embarrassing. ]

Yep. It's crocheting, but it's not like there's much of a difference between the two, it's just that the first one's better for amigurumi... Those are pretty cute, don'tchya think?

[ They're smaller than some other projects, but he thinks that their size makes them more charming. ]

( which is the most vocal ranger's probably heard nene be in a hot minute, honestly. nene fondly brushes a finger over one of the rabbits' heads, smiling brightly before reaching for her pen and paper to write again. )
