THE CHRISTMAS MINGLE YOUR PARENTS WARNED YOU ABOUT

At some point in the night, taking advantage of the perma-silence, Lucifer and a few others sneak about to decorate the dormitory for the holidays. The morning of 12/25, you'll wake up to the smell of Christmas cookies wafting from the dorm kitchen, and upon actually leaving your room, there are string lights and decorations thrown up in the hallways and the common room proper.

The decorating is, of course, courtesy of Nene, who has been working hard to ensure that there's something more beautiful than those ghoulish paintings on the walls here. You can thank Helena, Sidney, and Lucifer for both the cookies and other, more substantial food which will periodically be presented throughout the day — Lucifer practically lives in the kitchen for the duration of the party and can sometimes be seen shooing the other two out to go have fun. That said, the table housing all of these dishes, ranging from traditional Christmas meals (as best they can do with limited resources, anyway) to more ostentatious treats will never be empty, so please eat to your heart's content!

Thanks to Amami, there's a large, undecorated Christmas tree in the middle of the common room that looks to be very well taken care of. Next to it is a table full of art supplies for making colourful paper ornaments, and a small card lying nearby that instructs those participating to write down a wish on the ornament proper before hanging it on the tree. It may not come true, but you know it'll be safe since no mysterious forces set this up — wish away!

Should you come to spend time at the party and fraternize, you'll find that you're being waited on by a number of small little imps except they're all wearing tiny Santa hats — they'll bring you food and drinks and candy should you request it, and they're on their Best Behaviour, so please be nice to them! They are simply underpaid service workers. They're absolutely thrilled to talk to you in chirps and weird demonic chittering, and they understand what you're saying at least.

In the back corner of the room, there's a minute-to-win-it type game set up: two chairs are tied by the backs together by two ribbons, about two feet apart from one another. Nearby, there's a table of candycanes for use in this game. The goal of the game is to toss a candycane while standing on one of the chairs and get said candycane to catch on the ribbons, or to see who can get the most candycanes on a ribbon in a minute. The instructions are explained on a little card sitting nearby, with further note to not eat all of the candycanes (there are more set out on the food table, you see) so people can play, and another smaller note banning the use of magic against an opponent who doesn't have it. Let's keep the game fair, people. And let's thank Hikaru for running out to get an obnoxious amount of candycanes for everyone.

Lucifer will intermittently come join the festivities from time to time when he's not cooking, wearing this, please feel free to bully the demon for celebrating the holiday from the religion he hates. He can take it, it's okay.

Last but certainly not least, Noah is roaming about the party using his magic to try and liven the place up. Little stars hang from the ceiling around him in a ten-foot radius, and should you frown at all, he will come up to you and put cat ears formed of magic shadows on you until you laugh. On occasion, he can be seen slipping out of the party with cookies and stacking them on a plate in front of Komaeda's door. The stars go with him, but the good news is that Natsume is also helping with their little lightshow, so the twinkling indoor galaxies will not be absent for long. It's a joint effort between Clamor's apprentices, and their hard work really shows through, magic training is difficult after all. Feel free to bother either of them to do magic tricks for you, if you'd like, or just lie down under a curtain of stars.

The night promises to be magical (semi-literally), even if we're all stuck in purgatory, so relax, put your feet up, and sing Christmas carols to your heart's content. And don't worry about the cleanup — just try not to pass out on the floors.

[OOC: Merr Crimmus try not to kill each other, that is my only request, otherwise go buck wild]

I think maybe it'd be easier if I could manipulate the shadows of other people or objects, but I conjure my own. Making your shadow itself have cat ears would be a whole other animal — um, pun not intended.

[He idly scratches at his cheek with slight embarrassment before continuing,]

I have a lot of idle time here... more than I did back home, anyway. In that time, I've gotten better at magic, but not in ways meant for combat. More like... stuff like this. Having all this free time is still foreign to me, even almost a year since I... "woke up" here.

So it gets harder to conjure them the further away it is?

[Makes sense... there's some level of draw distance to it. And then people keep moving about, so it has to match up with that instead of just gamboling around as a cat... probably. And then if it's just manipulating something that's already there... it fits it'd be easier, though even Noah sounds uncertain about it... Something to ask Clamor about later, maybe.]

Combat... Wait, were you battling monsters or something?

[Shin is suddenly having to reconcile years of fantasy world tropes that make sense as fiction with, oh yeah, that's real to Noah and it means a highschooler is fighting things with magic?

...It's also kind of sad that having to go to school counts as 'free time', although Shin gets what he means. A little bit.]

Huh, you've been here since the start, then... It's strange, isn't it? It feels like way longer and no time at all...

[A death game hypercompresses things, you feel grateful for every hour... but then time passes in a blur of unknown duration at the same time, stretched and distorted. Being here feels like having been in a submarine, slowly adjusting to lighter pressure... but not the surface.]

...you could say that, yeah. Mostly... mostly I was fighting the mutated remnants of people that the cult Clamor and I are working against had... had created.

[It's difficult to put that into words, both because it's unusual as far as he's parsed and also because it is beyond fucked.]

But I don't have to do that here, for obvious reasons. It's good. It's not better here than back home, but they're about on the same level of bad. There's benefits here that there weren't back home.

[Like... the fact that he's made so many friends, and that the person who killed his brother isn't here. In a weird way, Noah's glad that his elder brother isn't here either, because hopefully that means the man's soul is laid to rest.]

It's funny to think, in a morbid way, that I'm one of the longest-surviving students here. Inaba, Clamor, Miyuki... some others were here in the beginning, but they disappeared or died at some point and came back.

[Technically Noah has died the most out of the currently-living student body this year on account of being a reckless asshole, but the Moonstone is what has saved his ass, so he... also technically didn't die as he has no tallies due to time rewinding. Weird to think about.]

I feel like I should know how to get out of here by now, or be better at this whole thing, but I'm just... not.

O-oh.

[That does sound beyond fucked, Shin has no idea what to say that isn't some level of 'that's rough, buddy.' It being a different kind of bad... he's thinking about that with what he's heard from Nene, Sidney, and from his and Sara's own situation... then again, how many people die in good situations? The school has it's benefits... the downsides means he doesn't really trust them.

...Miyuki? That's someone he doesn't know all that much about.]

...

[That's a thought he's been finding himself having recently, and he's been here for much less than that.]

...it's tricky, isn't it? If it was just a matter of time that would be one thing, but. You can put a lot of time into something and still get nowhere... Brute forcing it only works so well.

[Like obsessing over a password... But also, it's something in his creative endeavors, games as well... stressing over a detail for so long only to find he needs to go back and try some completely different approach from the start. It's frustrating.]

If... you just don't have the opportunities to move forward... you're kinda stuck, so. D-don't blame yourself, okay?

[Time is precious, required, you can't do a lot if you don't have a lot of it... But.]

...yeah. I'll try not to.

[Noah simply doesn't know what else to say on the topic — what could he possibly say that hasn't already been said? That he'll inevitably blame himself for something in the future even if he's gotten better at not doing that? That he's worried they'll never get out of here, but maybe that's for the best considering what he has to return home to?

That's all too depressing for a party, one that he's supposed to be entertaining people at. This whole conversation might be considered depressing for that reason. Hm...

When times are tough (and/or sad), the best thing to do is completely change the subject, obviously! Noah conjures a little ball of light in his hands and, with a flick of his wrist, tosses it upwards where it soon after blossoms into a shower of harmless sparks that twinkle in the air around Shin. Slowly, they fall from the air, but they dissipate long before touching the ground.]

It's okay, since free time means I can do tricks like this. I wouldn't have learnt this if I were back home.

[Shin is a masterclass in changing the subject himself and considers it a fine option in any conversational awkwardness so he's happy to let this dissipate into the ether. He looks up, blinks, holds out a hand to catch the sparks on his palm. There's a small spark in his eyes; he can act and even be as jaded as he likes... it's just very very cool. Learning a little only makes him wish he could do this more.]

Reminds me of blowing bubbles, just a bit. Or fireworks, ahaha. You don't even have to buy anything...

[He can't quite shake the habit of money being on his mind. But it's all just Noah's effort, even if it'd probably get exhausting to do for too long...]

As long as you aren't working too hard... It's not good to exhaust yourself, after all.

[The sparks are sort of warm to the touch, but certainly not hot and definitely not anything painful.]

Mm... I'm not. I'm good at taking breaks. [He nods toward Natsume who's nebulously Somewhere out there at this party.] Natsume is helping me too, so no one will get bored. Not that I think anyone would...

[They're all pretty good at entertaining themselves here. Noah's starting to see wishes filling up the Christmas tree, and there are people mingling all over the place... Noah doesn't exactly come from a world where "cell phone addiction" or whatever is a problem, but if he could draw the comparison, he'd say that people are more than capable of being without internet and then gesture to all of this.]

I guess it kind of is like fireworks, but with a lot less smoke in the air. The last time I saw fireworks was... back home, when I was a kid looking out the window during the Harmony Festival.

[Before his doppelganger of a sibling decided to blow up the world anyway.]
