( there's various hidden signs that point towards the elevator, and if anyone catches sight, they'll see an arrow that points up, indicating for them to take it skyward. if they get off too early, there's a sign on the floor that reads, "next stop!", so if they dare, they can go back into the elevator and do as the words command. upon making your way to the rooftop on new year's eve, the setup is immediately apparent.
a number of glittering, sparkling decorations line the area — streamers, balloons, music, and a brightly colored sign the reads: happy birthday hinachan. at the heart of the setup is a bonfire that reaches almost shoulder-height — properly set up to make sure it doesn't spread anywhere further than its containment area, it sets a festive tone.
"borrowed" desks are also covered in an array of treats and appetizers courtesy of nene and amami, as well as enough love setsugetsukka to "make 3 people black out," which is probably enough to share if nobody gets too ambitious. the cake at the center of it all is the real star of the show however, almost as big as a person all on it's own.
to top it all off, even under the dim glow of the stars, nobody is short of a little light when natsume and noah's dazzling light show begins. once the main event has closed, a variety of firecrackers are brought out to celebrate with as things begin to wind down. varieties include the classic sparklers, these little spinny bitches, funky little sparkshowers, some little baby rockets, with the larger varieties spanning a couple feet at most. on the opposite side, there's a little table where a birdhouse is kept, and inside stuffed with all sorts of cotton and wood shavings are two birds huddled together inside, and a few treats that people can feed them if interest. if keigo looks at your character from afar, it's fine, that birdhouse they're living in was made by them, after all.
and at the centre of it all will be one boy with a bag over his head, kidnapped by rokuro arata, who sits him down and lets komaeda undo his blindfold — happy birthday, hinata-kun! )

I don't like being touched.
[ Sorry npckun, he's bad at this kind of thing, but at least he's honest. ]
no subject
Then, touch me.
[ Like there's some sort of difference. And there is, sort of, the way Komaeda and Subaru don't like to be touched unless it's them first. ]
no subject
[ He's eased up some with a few people, but it's still not something he's really comfortable with. At least they're considerate enough to ask. ]
You just like hugging people?
no subject
I like being hugged, because that's just about the best feeling in the world! But I only hug people I like.
[ It's a one-way street, sort of, but that's everybody's experience, isn't it? Nobody hugs for the sake of hugging, but the intention behind it, whether that's receiving or expressing. ]
You don't have to give me a hug, though. Any sort of thermal conduction will work.
no subject
Rio considers that for a moment before nodding. He lifts up his hand again, letting the luzon retreat back into the the safety of its house with its companion. ]
You think so? You must be the affectionate type. Thermal conduction... That's a pretty clinical way to say it, isn't it?
[ Still, they've seen fine enough in the times that Ranger has seen them, and he knows this is a person that Komaeda likes. So with the bird securely back in his house, he can at least reach out a hand to pat their head. Maybe they'll even get a hair ruffle if they're lucky. ]

[ It's a little clinical, maybe, but sometimes it's hard to find the right words and a dictionary has lots of them they can use.
They're coming to like Ranger better than most strangers, anyways, but this is also on the receiving end, so it's fine, as fine as it is that Ranger can feel npckun jolt a little when he first touches the top of their head, before they force themselves to settle down again. They have thick, fluffy hair, but they can still feel the warmth, especially in contrast to the winter night air. ]
Oh, you're right. You're very warm.
no subject
Yep! My temperature more or less stays the same no matter, so animals just think I'm a heater for them.
no subject
Like a hummingbird. Why the high BMR, though?
[ Where is all that energy going towards... ]
no subject
It's a design choice. It's more likely that parts are going to start failing if there's constant temperature fluctuations, so it's easier to just keep it one way or the other at all times.
[ that explains everything right. ]

Even god makes mistakes sometimes... In terms of thermoregulation, though, isn't it easier to warm up than cool down? There's a limit to how much you can cool down on your own, and if it gets just a bit too hot, things are going to start boiling and shutting down. But surviving in super low negative temperatures is still possible because there's no limit to the amount of insulation and external heat sources you can use, and if nothing else, as long as you have somebody else you can share that warmth!
[ Holds their arms out again as if this proves why hugs are essential for survival and Ranger should give them a hug
also they think whoever made that design choice is stupid ]
no subject
Hmm.. Well, it regulates itself so I don't ever run hot either. My temperature remains the same regardless of circumstances. It's actually pretty convenient, since I don't have to worry about freezing or burning up.
[ Speaking of... ]
...
Are you just cold?
no subject
I'm not just cold.
[ They're cold but they're also right. Arms stay up. ]
...I don't like being outside at night, so it's not usually a problem.
no subject
Hmm, really? You afraid of the dark or something?
[ He's just teasing, really. Also Ranger only has one arm free he can't hug so there. ]
no subject
...Yeah. I don't like not being able to see anything, or know what's going on around me.
[ There are other senses, sure, but sight is the one that's relied on the most. Can't rely on sound either when your brain is going AAAAAAAAA in the background ]
no subject
You can always take somebody with you. It's not so bad if you do it that way.
[ It's really not that different than anything else in that regard. Humans are social creatures, so just having somebody else is a comfort... Still, it's not surprising that they're afraid of the dark. Ranger thinks that most people are at least a little bit skittish about it. ]
But I guess there's really no reason to, especially in this place. Kinda freaky to not be able to hear anything.
[ He's adjusted to it, but he still doesn't like it any more than a human would. ]
no subject
You can't hear anything?

[ ...They've never seen midnight before, having a strict self-imposed 10pm bedtime, and in those times they startle awake at night gasping for breath or choking on tears, it's in the darkness of their blankets and with an effort to mask the sound that they don't realize there's nothing to mask anyways. ]
Weird. The library used to be like that, but I heard it was to protect the students. [ In a very convoluted manner, but there was intent behind that silence. ] What does no sound after midnight help? I guess it's easier to fall asleep if it isn't noisy...
no subject
[ Must've been before his time. Even so, he wonders if the same concept might not apply here. If it wasn't to protect them, then at the very least it was acting as a cover for something. ]
I guess it could be the same, or maybe somebody's trying to hide something.
