( there's various hidden signs that point towards the elevator, and if anyone catches sight, they'll see an arrow that points up, indicating for them to take it skyward. if they get off too early, there's a sign on the floor that reads, "next stop!", so if they dare, they can go back into the elevator and do as the words command. upon making your way to the rooftop on new year's eve, the setup is immediately apparent.
a number of glittering, sparkling decorations line the area — streamers, balloons, music, and a brightly colored sign the reads: happy birthday hinachan. at the heart of the setup is a bonfire that reaches almost shoulder-height — properly set up to make sure it doesn't spread anywhere further than its containment area, it sets a festive tone.
"borrowed" desks are also covered in an array of treats and appetizers courtesy of nene and amami, as well as enough love setsugetsukka to "make 3 people black out," which is probably enough to share if nobody gets too ambitious. the cake at the center of it all is the real star of the show however, almost as big as a person all on it's own.
to top it all off, even under the dim glow of the stars, nobody is short of a little light when natsume and noah's dazzling light show begins. once the main event has closed, a variety of firecrackers are brought out to celebrate with as things begin to wind down. varieties include the classic sparklers, these little spinny bitches, funky little sparkshowers, some little baby rockets, with the larger varieties spanning a couple feet at most. on the opposite side, there's a little table where a birdhouse is kept, and inside stuffed with all sorts of cotton and wood shavings are two birds huddled together inside, and a few treats that people can feed them if interest. if keigo looks at your character from afar, it's fine, that birdhouse they're living in was made by them, after all.
and at the centre of it all will be one boy with a bag over his head, kidnapped by rokuro arata, who sits him down and lets komaeda undo his blindfold — happy birthday, hinata-kun! )

( looks at him curious, though he knows nothing, or he'll act like he doesn't, but they've already been over the conversation of subaru's late father. )
If I was you, maybe you should hope to die with Sakasaki-kun. ( he'll pass over the little spinny bitch sparkler to subaru to play with. ) It'd be nice to die having somebody there.
no subject
... particularly when subaru hasn't brought it first, not unlike with physical touches. he'll take the firework to light off, watching it spin bright yellow into cool blue against the snow. a dying star, just before it collapses in on itself.]
In the jungle with my unit. I probably climbed a tree to scout and fell, or got bitten by a snake, or contracted food poisoning from the crabs we found -- even if we cooked 'em, there's no telling where they came from. Or maybe I was shot. [it's a lot. but the main point is that he wasn't alone, though it's clear he's trying to remember what he has and hasn't told komaeda; it's been a while since they spoke of his late-father.
he shrugs, casual. trying to be, in that unbothered air he puts out when they get on the subject of stuff he doesn't want to talk about.
he doesn't know, he doesn't think about it a lot, he did when he first woke up and it's been the last thing on his mind since -- it trades off on feeling guilty instead, guilty and preoccupied with someone else.]
But that sure is a depressing topic, huh~? We shouldn't ruin Hina-chan or the Earth's birthday like that.
no subject
( they wouldn't be here now playing with fireworks on new years eve with a smile, nor would they energetically talk about a sad conversation on how the other may have died. )
Going through a list like that, you must really not want to die like your father.
( no matter how much subaru crawls away from the subject, komaeda turns to meet his eyes, and it's like the other fell into a trap by even listing his thoughts. besides, why is it depressing now when subaru seemed head over heels about the chance to growing until he was old with natsume?
those he can read easily make life slightly enjoyable.
he nods, turning towards the direction where hinata stands so he can check on him, and once he notices the other smiling and laughing. )
What part of the subject saddened you, Akehoshi-kun?
no subject
it's that sort of feeling. the way a wild animal knows to be wary by instinct, the way he understands how blindly stepping foot near komaeda, or natsume, or eichi ends up.]
How'd you die, Maddy?
no subject
Obviously trash like myself died for hope, there's no other way.
( there's no need to talk about it in a bad light, he loves the purpose of how he died.
he doesn't know anything else. )
All the ways you listed, they're hopeful, aren't they? Being with your unit, playing in the forest... you must have been sad when your father died hopelessly, huh...?
( he doesn't reach out, instead he stays in place looking off. ) Hmm...
no subject
Shut up about my dad. The hell do you know, anyway?
[he's searching his mind, but he doesn't recall saying anything about how he died. maybe it could be figured out offhandedly from the way he spoke about yumenosaki, how the industry wrings out dreams and the like 'til there's nothing left, but.]
no subject
( oh, how unfortunate, he thinks, laughing softly because he swallows it down. he doesn't know a thing, he hasn't seen a thing, but yet he knows everything as he acts like subaru's hold onto him hurts, even flinching with a little frown. )
You'll leave a bruise...
( and that would be another sore spot. ) We shouldn't fight at Hinata-kun's party.
no subject
[... but he feels bad immediately, letting go of komaeda and keeping his hands to himself. thinking better and sticking them in the cold snow, the ice prickling his bare skin. he won't apologize. but he feels bad.]
How I died doesn't have anything to do with my dad, so there's no reason to bring him up. Especially not right now. Okay?
no subject
( him, or the words that he says, in ranger's words, to use that information against someone would be best when they're at their low. that's to ensure some personal gain, but even then, he's sure that subaru doesn't recognize anything. )
Are you going to go into the new year with such negative feelings? ...What happened to that smile you normally carry?
no subject
It's difficult, Maddy, I don't wanna talk about it. Okay?
no subject
( it's not perfect, but it's forced, he dimmed for a moment, and now he's trying to bring himself back. komaeda wonders if he'd do better off crying. )
Or, can you not hold that smile if you do mention it.
( at this point, he might as well talk to see if subaru leaves first. it is hinata's birthday party, so he should be mindful. ) Now now, don't steal the show, we already have one cry baby.
no subject
subaru can't remember the last time he cried outside of a few tears shed for someone else, because even the ss hadn't done anything but drain him and leave him a husk to be filled by the love and belief of his friends. he doesn't cry now either, just pulls his knees to his chest so he can hug them, chin set on top as he watches off the roof.
you could push him off, a voice says softly in his mind, and subaru shakes his head, unease at the thought.]
What's it matter to you, anyway?
no subject
( komaeda doesn't understand having family, or being here with them, he's lost that a long time ago. though, why is he saying anything at all. perhaps it's just a reminder that he should focus on what's important, what he has, and what he doesn't have. he laughs, leaning back as he lays his arms across his chest. )
Akehoshi-kun, just keep in mind what's important.
no subject
I miss my mom. I miss my dog, and my friends back home. I miss being an idol, I miss going to Yumenosaki. [...] I miss going to Dad's grave and talking to him, too. That's only a small part of the list, but I don't regret everything and everyone that's become important to me here.
[which he won't list because komaeda'll pick it apart like he's judging subaru's grocery choices. also look. it's fine when he brings up his dad, but not when other people do; it's an instant reaction, the other can gather, but that has its own uses.]
I wanna keep shining for them, so I will. I don't plan on burning out either, before you say anything~. There's people here who'll stop me before it gets that bad, probably~.
[... like natsume, who's always watching him.]
no subject
( now can he say one day they'll go home? that's no longer part of the plan, and he's a little disappointed as he thinks about how such a thoughtful arrangement could bring such turmoil. he looks up at the sky, watching the stars twinkle gently back and forth, if he could buy a star to wish on, would he? the though terrifies him, it'd just kill those that he wished for, so he turns to look at subaru.
can he truly be the manifestation of a star. )
You lack restraint, but that's not a bad thing...
( he'll reach out, grabbing the tips of subaru's hair to brush it between his index and thumb, and then he pulls away. )
Don't worry about them so much, they can take care of themselves too, if you move forward for anyone... make sure to think of yourself along the way as well. ( that's also in a tone of make sure you don't act TOO selfishly. ) You wouldn't want to let down certain people would you?
( he's going to get up, stretch his arms, and yawn softly. )
no subject
... yes, no?]
Would you be one of those people, Maddy?
no subject
( he'll look off to the distance, laughing softly before he looks up towards the clocktower above them. he has to go there soon. he glances back town towards subaru though, giving an indication once their eyes meet that he can tag along. )
But you shouldn't disappoint me either, I'm here to help your hope. I want to see you reach heights you never believed yourself could.
no subject
...
subaru glances away, a little struck by the follow-up words. so they hadn't been mistaken signs, or a narrative he pushed onto the other: komaeda really was expecting something from him, encouraging and treating him nicer. never as nice as his "ultimates", but subaru prefers it that way; it's suffocating, from first hand experience, and something he shys away from.
... or maybe he's just hoping that's the case, that his months of effort haven't been for naught.]
I'm not aiming on disappointing anyone, Maddy~. So you don't gotta worry your head on that front, just keep your eyes on me and watch me shine. ♪
[but he'll stand up, looking at the clocktower curiously. subaru'll tag along if he's allowed, but he's curious.]
Are you heading up there? Why?
