この気持ち…伝わってるといいんすけどね (12/31)

( there's various hidden signs that point towards the elevator, and if anyone catches sight, they'll see an arrow that points up, indicating for them to take it skyward. if they get off too early, there's a sign on the floor that reads, "next stop!", so if they dare, they can go back into the elevator and do as the words command. upon making your way to the rooftop on new year's eve, the setup is immediately apparent.

a number of glittering, sparkling decorations line the area — streamers, balloons, music, and a brightly colored sign the reads: happy birthday hinachan. at the heart of the setup is a bonfire that reaches almost shoulder-height — properly set up to make sure it doesn't spread anywhere further than its containment area, it sets a festive tone.

"borrowed" desks are also covered in an array of treats and appetizers courtesy of nene and amami, as well as enough love setsugetsukka to "make 3 people black out," which is probably enough to share if nobody gets too ambitious. the cake at the center of it all is the real star of the show however, almost as big as a person all on it's own.

to top it all off, even under the dim glow of the stars, nobody is short of a little light when natsume and noah's dazzling light show begins. once the main event has closed, a variety of firecrackers are brought out to celebrate with as things begin to wind down. varieties include the classic sparklers, these little spinny bitches, funky little sparkshowers, some little baby rockets, with the larger varieties spanning a couple feet at most. on the opposite side, there's a little table where a birdhouse is kept, and inside stuffed with all sorts of cotton and wood shavings are two birds huddled together inside, and a few treats that people can feed them if interest. if keigo looks at your character from afar, it's fine, that birdhouse they're living in was made by them, after all.

and at the centre of it all will be one boy with a bag over his head, kidnapped by rokuro arata, who sits him down and lets komaeda undo his blindfold — happy birthday, hinata-kun! )

( he can't do both! they don't have that power anymore!! clearly after pointing it out, he's not bothered by the face, but he does find that it ruins the picture. an uninvolved third party making it into the moment that he's unable to get his eyes off of.

his gaze moves to rio once again, looking at his little smile while seeing as his own is hidden behind a card. he takes this opportunity to switch the open-mouth grin to something cat-like, and he hums behind it. the card taps at his own lips lightly, contemplating if it's even possible, besides komaeda is always smiling. )

We can try, no matter where you are, as soon as the clock strikes 12, smile. I'll smile too, no matter the circumstance.

( what reason will he have not to smile? hm, all he can do is just that despite hearing people say it's not an actual one. )

I'll even borrow one of your cards.

( to replicate the picture. )

[ Rio turns his head slightly to look at Komaeda, and he's suddenly aware of how close he is in a way that he hsn't been in the past. There's a touch of embarrassment, and he's quick to turn his gaze forward and down again.

If he thinks about it, if they did that, they could both end the current millenium and begin the new one with a smile... It's a nice thought, and his heart flutters at the thought of being able to share that with someone. It's never meant anything to him, and even now he would be fine without, but then he's never had the opportunity for it to mean something. ]

.. Okay. Then I'll make sure I'm smiling too.

[ His voice is a little soft, but contented.

That said, he wasn't expecting that last bit. ]

Huh? Which one?

How about the catty grin?

( the emphasized, laying down 3 adorned with fangs, and quick strokes of cat whiskers. it's fitting for the theme yogen presents to them, and it's an expression komaeda can easily integrate into his way of speaking; much like talking with his hands. it'll be difficult to make sure that it has to be held against his face, can someone like komaeda pull it off?

there's many positive cards, but he should really sit down and make negative ones too. komaeda makes a mental note to himself to sit down proper again, make a few more that could be useful. one card that covers his face, and one that covers his eye, which is no different from the supposed expression that others tell komaeda about.

the disgusting, determined swirls in one eye, and the blank, dead look in the other. )

( he taps the cards by rio's waist, sifting through to see which he wants. )

Hmm...

[ There really are a lot of positive cards. There's a few negative ones - an angry face, an intense stare, an embarrassed squiggle of a grown, a pout, and a crying card with a squiggly frown. But of those, one was made by Komaeda and the other is meant to represent a person. The rest are undeniably meant to be fun, cheerful cards - a confident profile, a shark-toothed grin, an exaggerated open-mouthed, toothy grin; a pair of cards with 3-shaped mouths, one of which has a blush and the other seeming to be more playful in nature, a squiggly smile with a forked tongue hanging out, a wide smile, a simpler and less perfect cat face... They're all fun, lively, and cartoonish expressions meant to create the image of a person who is just the same.

He's going to slip the camera back into Komaeda's pocket so he can start the process of holding a few of those cards up in front of his partner's face, seemingly at random, before seeming to decide against each one. Then he's going to guide Komaeda's hand back so he can look at the cat card in front of it again.

He might have just wanted to see how they look on another person. ]

Yeah, I like that one for you. Let's do that.

[ He takes up the rectangular cat card again, a simple and slightly messy sideways 3 with a few little whiskers poking out on either side, and holds it up in front of his face now since Komaeda still has the ones he's usually holding. ]

( there's weight added into his pocket, the camera slipped back where it belongs. he would have asked rio if he wanted to use it, and take pictures of the people he's here with today. komaeda should tell him that, if people smile around him, he should take pictures to remember even though his memory will serve the same purpose.

that it doesn't matter.

they both have matching cards to a certain degree, a cat-like expression that can charm anyone who looks their way. as rio perceives him this close, he's curious if he likes looking at him wearing the card. komaeda keeps the card settled in place right before his lips, looking around for somewhere to sit, and he'll find a table. )

We really have to make you more, hm, you told me what you wanted. Tomorrow I'll visit the art room, and see what I can do.

( even sara dared him to make art with a friend, so maybe that works which means rio can't hover over him in wait for a new card being added to the list. it'll be a surprise, though, he wonders if rio will come with if not spoken aloud.

he does whatever he feels like. )

[ Rio takes a seat on the other side of the table, perking up at the mention of making more. It's the kind of thing where he would be satisfied with anything that was made as long as it was for him. It is, however, indeed a good idea to force him to participant in the process since otherwise he really will just hover over Komaeda and look over his shoulder to see what he's doing like the impatient child that he is.

But he wants to be able to do that with Komaeda again. ]

Really? I can come too, since I wanna make a couple new ones.

[ That answers that question. He really is simple on some matters. ]

You don't know what a surprise is, do you?

( he's knows that rio knows, but the meaning behind his efforts were to do them alone, and maybe with someone else whoever was interested. he wonders if chiaki would be willing to join without punching komaeda in his gut? he thinks it over with a smile, a hand lifts to tap the side of his own cheek as he continues to hold the card so rio's unable to see komaeda suck his cheeks in thoughtfully. once he's come to a conclusion, he ceases doing so, and shifts the card to the side so that the other can actually see the grin on his face. )

I had a feeling you'd want to, but wouldn't it be fun to do it separate, then see if we accidentally make the same sort of card?

( now if rio is about to call that a waste of time and paper, komaeda's ready for it. )

[ There's a displeased little sound at the former question, followed by that blank stare in response to the latter. He does, and he understood the implication, he was just choosing to ignore it. He's not really a fan of surprises, anyway, and he doesn't see much of a reason for it.

That said, he doesn't really see the appeal of accidentally making the same kind of card either. This does, in fact, strike him as a waste of time and paper. ]

Why would that be fun? That just sounds wasteful.

[ Why does he have two cat cards then? Well because he insulted the one Safalin gave him, made a new one, and then kept the only one anyway. It is, however, the only duplicate that he appears to have. ]

Well, it's because we won't know what we're drawing, then we can see if we have the same tastes or not.

( he flips the card around, the bare backside visible now as he komaeda stares at what's drown on the front. there's a few ideas, but nothing as cute, so he doubts they'll make the same face card. yeah, he really thinks that would be by a long shot for it to happen, and he sets the card down on the table as he stares at rio with a playful smile, almost like he's up to something. )

You must get lonely pretty quickly now, if that's the case...

( waiting for rio to fill in the blank. )

[ The way he tilts his head to one side suggests that he doesn't quite get it, but after a few seconds he nods in acceptance of it all the same. He doesn't mind.

Now, he could helpfully fill in the blank, but... ]

Nah, nothing's changed there.

[ ... Naturally, he just offers a small correction instead. Does that mean that he doesn't get lonely easily at all, or that he hadn't before? The former is far more likely. ]

Anyway, I don't mind.

( no matter how many times he tells him that he can't come, he ignores it, and chooses to come anyway. that's not how this works, but he does well not looking over to sara wondering what she'd do in this predicament, instead, he laughs easily enough without needing to be prompted. he truly is a simple child. )

Ah... are you telling me you're just lonely in general? That's bad, so if you feel lonely you can hang out with me.

( but he shouldn't be lonely considering there's so (less) many people within the school, he has a nice group to choose from. there's no need for komaeda to take up his time, but he'll give him another route to take. )

Should we walk around asking people what sort of cards they'd make, that would be interesting...

[ Rio does as he pleases, just as Komaeda does. He shakes his head now though, willing enough to acquiesce on this. ]

Ah, well, I'm used to having somebody around... [ Which probably isn't surprising given his circumstances. ] It's fine, if you wanna make it a surprise, I won't ruin it.

[ He hesitates at the idea of asking others, eyes flicking to the side. It's not something he objects to, but the odd look he's gotten from some hasn't escaped his notice. ]

Ah, you think we should...?

( when rio acts like that, it's pretty difficult to just brush him off when he's excited for making cards, which happens to be an important part of his partnership with someone. it's the moment they share, while making him new expressions to use here on out. )

Now... if you happen to stumble in on me making them, I can't force you to leave, now can I?

( like it's a hint of what would be the better alternative. he follows rio's gaze, then glances at everyone else. )

Do you feel comfortable having other people's ideas of happiness and sadness as part of your gimmick?

[ It takes him a few seconds, but he does seem to catch onto the implication. Rio nods. ]

I'd just ignore you if you tried.

[ Which is true, whether or not he listens to Komaeda seems to depend on his mood at any given time. ]

Sure, I don't mind. I already based some of them on others.

[ He takes a couple cards out, switching the cat card for the squiggly frown. ]

This is the face that Safalin always makes... [ Then the simple but too-wide smile. ] And Miley's like this.
