( so, it's like this: nobody likes komaeda.

well, it seems that way a lot of the time, from what norton's observing, and the unfortunate fact of the matter? no matter how absolutely off-his-rocker insane he's been acting, he... well, real or not, he didn't seem to be a bad guy in those memories norton has of him. try as he might, he can't simply act as though they don't exist either. so instead, with a sigh of defeat and an important date that he'd learned in those strange memories in mind, he'll go about collecting those who seem to be... more tolerant (even if that's a generous way to express it) of komaeda lately.

he's already arranged for the most reliable chef he's yet to meet in this school to help by preparing a birthday cake, (and learned quite a bit in the process, actually,) and he's let the others know where they should gather. so, when norton decides it's about time to drag komaeda to the survival club's meeting room for some kind of survival club-related excuse of a reason, there should hopefully already be at least a couple of people there and waiting for them—including one boy holding a white cat who may or may not look a little out of his element.

his voice is soft, but as the cake and the small collection of people he's managed to gather come into view, norton offers a smile. )

Considering you always declare that everyone hates you despite being told otherwise constantly, I don't think you have any right to talk, Komaeda-san.

( and she says it so cheerfully too! )

But I know that this party wouldn't even exist if people didn't care about you. Maybe some people are just here for cake, but not everyone is.

( her eyes may sparkle, and her tone may carry this sort of infectious enthusiasm, but he only asks to get to know her better. that's all. )

Are you aware that even now, you can tell me all these things, but hate me the moment I turn my back.

( not that she would.. or would she? don't worry though, he'll take a closer step towards her before draping his newly acquired blanket over her head, and his hand settles on top to pat her gently. )

You could despise me in the future... it's why you don't have to waste your breath saying such kind things.

( this feels like a trick question, but she actually gets genuinely distracted. )

... I can't stand two-faced people like that. But you're right, someone could be like that.

( and then he drapes the blanket over her- nene squeaks for a moment, taken aback, before... trapping him in a hug. he drew first ~~blood~~ contact, she's just escalating. )

Love is just as much about the present as it is the future- and the present is the one worth living for. I care about you now, and so I'm here.

( covering her does nothing, especially when she manages to pull komaeda into her embrace anyway, and he flinches. it's a light reaction, one where he places his hand on her shoulders almost to try and make distance, but he doesn't push her away. instead, he stands there, staring down at her as he cants his head in mild confusion. )

Yashiro-san...

( sadly, the past, now and future are all different sides of komaeda, and he can only sigh as if trying to understand her reasoning. )

You should be careful, you'll break your heart clinging to me like that... haha. Now, now...

( his hand lowers, patting her back gentle as his way of trying to accept her affection. it's different, unfamiliar, and he wonders how long it'll last. ) You have to protect future you.

( when she suspects he least expects it, nene pops the blanket back over him- it's his, and that's important. she doesnt say, "there's nothing to protect". she doesn't say, "future me only exists for another year". instead, she reaches up best she can to adjust the blanket so its more like a hood on him, and smiles in spite of everything. )

You always fear for the worst. I'd rather just enjoy the 'now' while we're all here.

( "fear for the worst," that could be true, but there's always good luck around the corner if he waits. patience will be what makes everything worth it, and once something positive happen, he can look forward to what the bad will have in store for him. as she puts the blanket over him into a makeshift hoodie, he doesn't move from her touch and stays in place. )

Yashiro-san, I didn't want this to be good luck.

( he says, looking at her with a smile. )

Something bad may happen after, and I don't want to lose this moment so...

( in return, he moves closer to throw his arms around her, almost annoyingly as he squeezes tight. )

Is it luck if it's people acting with intent?

( if anything his attempt at annoyance only seems to make her laugh. with pure optimism and naivety, she looks up at komaeda with a smile for a moment before reaching up to gently squish his cheeks briefly. )

I'm sure it's going to be okay. So please, just let people care about you, okay?

Luck is built off that same intent, didn't you know?

( even with her squishing his cheeks, he figures it wouldn't be so bad to explain it to her. ) It just happens because it feels like it, that's why I know something will happen soon.

( he pauses, leaning his head into her left hand as he smiles. )

If you all died tomorrow, I wouldn't be surprised.

I think I understand... ( with what she knows about the near and far shore, and the flow of time... but she doesn't think she likes relying on it. especially when she's trying so hard to fight it. )

No, I don't think anything like that would happen. But if something bad does happen, doesn't that mean it's important to enjoy the good while you can?

I'm not upset when the bad happens either, because there's always something good at the end.

( especially with what's going on here, he raises a hand to lightly place his index finger in the center of nene's head. his touch is cold, pale, sickly eyes stare into her own while speaking: )

If you don't accept the strokes of good luck, you can prevent it a little longer. ( that's not true, but if you see everything as the bad, the good will have to become stronger. ) I'll accept this good luck for you, Yashiro-san, but when the bad comes... I do hope you can properly see me through it.
