Students

✽ Yumemi Minazuki: A student in class 1-D. An earnest and straightforward girl who falls in love easily. She seems to attract odd occurrences. Computer Science is one of her electies, and it seems that she was one of the students who was saved by transfer students' efforts after failing her final.

Faculty

✽ "Kazuki": The gardener is a spirit which appears in the courtyard during the night. He can not normally be seen, unless a character has the ability to see spirits, owns an adderstone through which they can see spirits, or visits the courtyard during nights of the full moon. Those who have spirit sight or see him during the full moon will see him in his human form; through an adderstone or within the "void" version of the school, the gardener appears in his true form as a man-eating monster. The gardener is blind, and only darkness can be seen in the eye holes of his mask. Rumor has it that the gardener has used to be employed as a teacher before becoming the gardener, and has been around almost as long as the counselor. He is patient and understanding, and is fond of the students.
✽ "Mizuki" Arata: The counselor is available during school hours, answering to a knock on the door with permission to enter. While the counselor typically sits on top of his desk, there are a variety of chairs in the office to choose from, and he will always offer to share his snack bowl. All supernatural powers are nullified within his office. Rumor has it that the counselor founded the school and is aware of everything that goes on in the school at any given moment. He can be difficult to talk with, but always seems to be having fun.

Other

✽ "God": "God" can be visited at the shrine accessed from within the forest, and will introduce themselves as Jizo, the deity who guides souls through the afterlife, particularly those of children and travelers. They take on the appearance of a middle school child, and although their power is limited, they may grant a wish for a price, and otherwise seems to enjoy company.

Faculty

✽ Principal: There is currently no principal. The principal's office is unlocked, but until the sub-zero temperature condition in the room is dealt with, normal students will quickly freeze to death upon entering. Rumor has it that historically, the principal monitors the school but does not have active involvement.
✽ Vice principal: There is currently no vice principal. The vice principal has a desk in the faculty office with the rest of the staff, and takes on the responsibilities of the principal if the principal is unavailable. Rumor has it that the vice principal's job involves a LOT of paperwork.
✽ Teachers: Teachers hold office hours in the faculty office from 4 PM to 6 PM and supplemental lessons are handwaved. Students of any age can apply for a teaching position, provided competency.
✽ Librarian: The librarian is available during school hours, and can help locate or otherwise order new books on specific topics upon request. Requests for books on specific topics are handwaved, as long as the book is not canon specific. Library materials are not to be removed from the library.
✽ Janitor: The janitor cleans the school at the end of each school day, of everything from trash in the bins to bodies and blood following a murder. They are never seen, but most students assume they exist. The janitor's closet, located between the faculty office and the bathroom, can be freely accessed.

Students

✽ Keigo Arata: The previous shopkeep of the student store. Unlike most students, they committed suicide to purposely arrive at the school, under contract with a "god." Through the efforts and sacrifice of their friends, this contract has since been nullified and they were killed in hopes of becoming an official student in the future.

Other

✽ A fluffy white cat: Very friendly and will come running seemingly out of nowhere when food is being offered. She can otherwise be found seeking out warm sunny spots within the school, and enjoys being kissed and petted but not held. She is called by many many names, including Lily Mayhemnaise, Lucy, Lucifer, Whitey, Yuki, Cygnus, Sweetheart, and Emerald Moon, but does not actually respond to any of them.
✽ A skinny black cat: Wary and skittish, and will occasionally come eat the leftovers after the fluffy white cat has eaten her share. He can otherwise be found perched up on high places out of reach, but will run away if approached. He appears to be small and skinny enough to squeeze through gaps underneath doors and other places, and is occasionally seen in the counselor's office or rooftop. He is called by many many names, including Beverage, Belphegor, Blacky, Yoru, Robbie, Crux, Sweetheart, and Citrine Blizzard, but does not actually respond to any of them.

Listening is what brought me here in the first place.

( when you get told to kys so many times, you ask the most random person if he agrees before going for it. but they're like soulmates, so it's meant to be... deeper. he thinks. ) I'll listen, so don't worry.

[ He doesn't like any and all Komaedas, but the one that talks to him rather than at him is easier to be around, as uncertain as he is about that promise that he'll be listened to.

Gonna worry no matter what, though, that's just who he is. ]

Then... you heard what I said before, right? About helping you.

( he heard, but he adds just a little because he thinks akki is that type of person. he doesn't mind if it's the truth, but he doesn't want him to lie about it either. )

Something about... a nap... or something, but that doesn't stop me from doing so. Have you been having weird dreams?

I— what?

[ He shakes his head, weird dreams being subjective and normal when you have so many that they become the norm, and reels the conversation back to the first thing Komaeda said before he lets it run amok. ]

Are you threatening me? If I don't help you die?

( is he threatening him, you know what. )

What's selfishness and selflessness to you?

( look, at least he moved onto something else. add said what amami did was selfish, komaeda called it selfless. it was add's way to say he'd do the same as amami, but didn't like that komaeda made amami's actions grander than what they were. being selfish, being selfless... it's difficult to label. )

[ If Akki knew Komaeda was using him as a sounding board for whether Amami's murder spree was justified, he would have turned around and kept walking. But he doesn't, so what he does is frown, vexed at Komaeda snipping the fishing line and taking hold of the conversation again.

This is what he means about not listening, but saying so would only fall on deaf ears. ]

Selfishness is doing something for yourself, and selflessness is ...doing something not for yourself.

[ It's in the definitions of the words, and besides, what does that matter? ]

( why does akki care, is he anti murder...!?!?!? could have fooled me after what he did to a child, he could be a murderer himself! and to nao... )

Are either of them wrong?

( they're both right, aren't they? or can they be wrong... or is it subjective depending on what happens...? how does akki see it through his own glasses, through his eyes that don't belong to komaeda. what komaeda sees... he didn't call add wrong, but even then... he was still upset. )

That- depends on context.

[ Like most things do. He's not going to give a generalized sweeping statement about the rights and wrongs and morals and ethics— he did not enroll in Komaeda's philosophy class for a reason, even though he might have been interested otherwise.

He squints a little at Komaeda, head turned to the side the same way Rokkun tilts his head when he's Unsure. ]

What is the context?

( akki's been hanging out with rokkun too much, and this is why komaeda didn't want to talk to rokkun about it.

If you bring a plant inside for the winter, you can save it for the spring. But if you leave it outside, what remains will become compost for the next year's garden bed. Is it selfish to let the plant die when you could have let it grow? Or is it selfless, because you're allowing it to give itself to the prospering of the garden as a whole?

( now there's a greenhouse outside that komaeda made ranger build, so it sounds good enough to him. )

You can't save it by hiding it outside, or the storms will be too strong for it to live.

( so things such as stem cutting, and covering them for winter, bedded down don't work. it's one of these two options. )

...his prayers never get answered anyways. But, for what it's worth, it's easier to answer the question when it's only about plants. It's just an entirely different question if it weren't. ]

That's like asking yourself if it's selfish to grow vegetables, or- or to raise animals for food... What's the actual context, Komaeda-san? Winter is over.

( they've always been plants, their hopes are being nurtured into lovely bushes filled with roses, the love that comes from it. they become trees that give shade to those who need protection. hope is beautiful, the humans that can grow such bountiful hope... are too. )

( an easy correction, he believes in akki to get this.

if he was someone else, maybe komaeda could tell him the true context, but akki isn't someone who wants to hear what's deep in his heart or his actual thoughts. it won't make them any closer.

he sighs. )

[ Being insulted to his face twice in... checks the time... less than five minutes makes him want to walk away once more, if it didn't mean proving Komaeda right? But so what? who cares? he frowns. ]

[ Slow, s's hissed. He's regretting having said anything now, actually. ]

( why is honesty an insult, god... komaeda looks down at the floor, and he looks left, then right. reaching for akki's wrist, he pulls the other over to the side. )

[ He wrenches his arm away, right hand clapping over his left wrist that's already covered by a thick threaded chevron bracelet.

An apology itches to escape, but he just presses his lips more tightly together. He said he'd listen, and that doesn't include being interrogated. ]

( that's not why he pulled him to the side, and his own arms drop down by his side. )

...Does it make sense to you?

( that's why this happened, because add was sympathizing. only certain people would see amami's actions as selfless, because those who could find happiness through it. others see him as a monster, and that's because they didn't know him or the child by his side.

that's why the subject is sensitive. akki might have only known amami two conversations, and maybe kogamo through conversations unless rokkun said more. he doesn't know, but if you can understand death to promote life, then maybe this will mean something to the other. )

I won't judge you, I just... ( picking up pieces of broken words. ) If you can't open your mind to the idea, if you shrug your shoulders. It really was useless coming this far.

[ He can't decide whether that makes him more or less inclined to believe him, the way he pauses, like he's carefully choosing his words instead of letting his mouth run like he usually does. It doesn't make sense to him, though, why somebody would reach out and touch him and say "oh I don't actually care", like a cat caught scratching up the corner of your mattress even though you've aluminum foiled the entire length of it and then walking away like nothing.

( it's not about tallies, it's about the reason of acting. why anyone does what they do, what makes them selfish or selfless, of is it doesn't matter in the end. was calling add selfish wrong? or was he right? amami's selfless because all ultimates are, or has komaeda's algorithm for what makes a person be a person become too hard for people to understand? it's always been him, but he chooses a third party who could think about these things, because selfish and selflessness can be achieved by anyone. )

So you understand... the idea of it... is it selfless or selfish, even when you know that person only cared about the other and not themselves.

Killing someone... to save somebody else? [ To save the person who was killed? To save themselves? This is getting into assisted suicide territory, the morals of which makes his stomach twist in having to discuss it with anybody, let alone the person standing in front of him. But he doesn't think that's the case Komaeda is referencing, either, and he can only answer with his own circumstances in mind. ]

Whether something is selfish or not depends on the people involved, and what they think... It can be selfish to one side and selfless to another. That's— it can be both, and I don't think it's something for uninvolved people to decide.

[ Which, of course, brings him back to why Komaeda is asking any of this of him ]

...It's because those uninvolved wouldn't understand, so they would see it as selfish.

( that makes most of the group, no one would see it the way he does, how selfless an act could be— it's true, amami became desperate at the end, but that was to save someone. it was more than komaeda could ever offer during his workshop of ideas, but it led to something. everyone took a part in some way, and others knew about the dilemma (rather, they had an inkling and chose to avoid digging deep). his organic hand curls in, fingers digging into his palm as he glances down— he would never expose a weakness to someone lesser than him, but he's in thought so he wants to go through all the steps. )

Do the people who will prosper from it have a say... they didn't take part, but it gives them something to look forward to the future?

( people like sara did take part, by being keigo's friend, by trying to understand amami as to why he did what he did— in the end she was hurt; lied, betrayed. those words caused something sinister to fester up from beneath her skin, it invaded her heart. she thought of amami wrong for it. if she understood what she gains in the end after a few months, maybe three, or four when patience is a virtue, when that version of the word feels so holier than thou. she'll obtain something so brilliant that she can enjoy as time moves forward. the smile of a young child, to hear the giggles when they both fail math... is that not a future to be excited about? )

( should komaeda listen to those people too, despite he listens to no one, but he's listening to akki now so maybe asking will be okay. )

Why does it matter?

[ People can argue endlessly one way or another but in the end... what good is it to say an act is selfish or selfless? Does selfish make it wrong and selfless right? Does the end result weigh more than the process? People are entitled to their opinion, whether they're involved or uninvolved, culprit or victim. ]

It matters because... I want to listen to you.

( he was asked to listen, and he's doing so. the again, this could be his answer... why does it matter. it's true, to komaeda, it's not like either choice is wrong. that feeling to explain that to add was there, but everything towards the end was... wrong of him.

Selfishness, selflessness... there's some selfishness that helps others, too... but that becomes selfless.

( a small hum as he looks at the other with a smile. maybe he can use those words to make amends if a time ever comes. )

( reaches to take akki's glasses because he's becoming touchy and a little more normal, but he's just looking at them because he needs something to hold.

[ No, nothing like that. According to Rokuro, the only feeling he ever got was that of a noose around the neck, and Komaeda may or may not notice any feeling at all. He's the one more likely to tie the noose, after all.

Also, not okay: ] H-hey! Stop that!

[ He takes his glasses back, and physically holds the frames on either side of his head so Komaeda can't pull them away again, because he never got his old pair back and the last he saw of them, Amami-san was wearing it, with the audacity to squint through the prescription because he might as well ruin his eyes if he planned to do the same with his life. ]

That's not a toy! It's like- like gouging out somebody's eyeballs!

[ An extension of the body, or something. ...Scary how he can see Komaeda reaching out and nonchalantly plucking out somebody's eyes, though. Maybe there's a better way to get the point across ]

( you know what, komaeda would in fact not know the feeling of that because it probably comes off as natural to him. being shackled down all his life along with a manacle around his neck that had a chain hanging in the front, that sort of binding is nonexistent and feels like nothing, though it offers him so many setbacks that he doesn't realize.

as akki takes his glasses, komaeda looks to him with a small smile. )

I'm glad Fujioka-kun's eyes are where they are, then. Now come on, tell me... you were right on the money with what you said.

( something like that, but now he's waiting for akki to give his thoughts and opinion, and if he's not careful, komaeda may just take his glasses yet again. )
