... the same as the last.
WHO: Nene Yashiro and You!
WHAT: After a year, Nene finds herself experiencing Spring Break in Yogen again. What's changed? What's the same?
WHEN: Spring Break ( March 21st - April 3rd )
WHERE: All over!
WARNINGS: references to cannibalism
a. empty exploration
( a year ago, nene woke up in this school and found herself trapped. and now, she remains still- a little bit older, barely taller, hair longer. still feeling clueless despite everything. she doesn't wake up in class 1-b, anymore. she lingers for a while as she passes it in her wanderings, though- she spent months there, after all. leaning on hajun, or just existing. the cardboard prison she constructed for her ice-breaker game still remains folded up behind a cabinet. hah... at least clamor enchanted it? that's funny.
nene leaves class 1-b behind, careful to avoid the elevator and the clocktower. she remembers last year sitting in it, leaning against the glass and looking at the forest longingly. but something about the clocktower feels wrong.
probably all the murder that happened in it.
be it up or down the stairs, nene wanders still. once upon a time she had looked for mokke. now she knows: there are none here, and that's a good thing. but now, perhaps appropriately, she feels like a ghost wandering an unwanted haunt. seeing another person brings her out of it, and she gives a small wave. time will tell if she'll say hello, though. )
b. crafts, cooking and comfort
( nene knows the crafts room like the back of her hand- same as the cooking room. just like last time, one can find her going over the stock of the kitchen- they have supplies in the dorm too, and she'll be going over that as well. this, combined with the vending machines, may last their greater numbers- and she can make big, hearty meals maybe... with noah bringing back biblically accurate deer, they have non-human meat for sure. even if it tastes kind of bad. so maybe you find nene half inside a cupboard counting quietly to herself with only the scritch of a pencil on paper as her only other company...
or maybe you'll find her in either the cooking room or the dorm kitchen, standing at a large pot diligently. curry and stews are filling, after all. and they have a lot of people to feed!
alternatively, nene can be found in the crafts room, once more organizing sewing kits, fabrics and threads. sometimes she's sewing, sometimes she's practicing knitting. all the while, a music box plays a gentle melody as she works, and she might not notice someone enter right away. when she does, though, she'll stop what she's doing and look at her guest. )
c. new sprouts
( perhaps the best thing about spring is the gardening club can be active again. so members or spectators may witness nene running around with some freshly cleaned pots and planters, or with entire tools. there's a lot to do- the winter seeds have already sprouted as the snow melts, and there's spring seeds to plant too. old potted plants have to be removed if they're beyond saving... and natsume's herb spiral probably needs tending to, too! the bad part is that nene isn't quite looking where she's going at one point, and may crash right into someone. woopsies. nene winces, giving an apologetic look before she ducks down to pick up seed packets gotten through a teacher before break. )
d. wildcard
( shoot yo' shot! nene is still mute for the most part but close cr pre-november may be able to get her to talk while relaxed. she's kinda running around all over the place, and just trying to be helpful. nene is still at 0 tallies and making no effort to hide this, so feel free to notice and stuff! )

Hmmm? I don't understand what you're trying to do. Is it a new dance?
[And then just as abruptly, after he feigns a confused expression for a minute to maybe let her falter, he quickly signs in return--]
It's a lie. Yes.
no subject
What is the last thing you remember? This place does things to your head sometimes. I should know, I've been here for a year now.
( she doesn't expect the truth- but if she's right, a fib will be telling in it's own right too. it's just a matter of... seeing what's not there. right? )
no subject
Let me ask you something instead. What do you last remember me doing, hm?
[He turns it around. Confirmation that there's familiarity there, confirmation that somehow, he's been here before. That's the first step. As well as getting an idea as to how he should be acting.]
After all, I'd hate to assume that you were replaced somehow. This place is weird enough as is - and I remember someone a loooo~ooot more vocal.
[That's a wild guess that could either be entirely correct, or entirely wrong. Either way, it might give him basis to stand on as having been here all along, if he were here at all.
Already this was even more confusing than expected, but he hated coming forward with the truth so easily: it put him in a vulnerable position.]

oh, that was unexpected. ... she probably should have. but... well. nene didn't like playing the suspicious party for him- she remembers thinking a long time ago that it must sting on some level, to be accused of lying at every turn. so even if she tried to take things with a grain of salt, she wasn't going to do that. so even though she falters, she'll be truthful too. hopefully this doesn't shake things up too much? (that's a lie. it will.) )
The last I saw you was shortly after the meeting in June. I don't know how it happened, though. We usually assume the worst when people go missing. And we're usually right. You were running around playing pranks on people. ( a pause, before she pouts. ) You even dumped a huge bucket of water on me!
( but he's right, and the pout fades with a sigh as she continues. )
I went mute in November. Sometimes I can talk, but not always.
no subject
Well, it sounds like something he'd do, anyway.
And then she admits to having become mute. He was right in assuming that it wasn't something that originally was the case, but his expression falters. He's quiet for a moment.]
I'm sorry to hear that.
[A beat. He mulls over the consequences of him being honest, but he can tell when people are genuine, usually. So he'd be hedging his bets on assuming that this wasn't an act that could fool even him. His paranoia is still lashing out at him, but...]
...I'm going to put the slightest bit of faith in you. Just this once. You don't seem like you're going to hurt anyone. [That, and despite himself...those younger than him usually fell under the umbrella of reminding him too much of what DICE stood for and all the kids who were a part of it. Not that he can reminisce. He's had to live in the moment for quite a while now, after all.] But I don't want you to go spreading this around, alright?
[He pauses, and then he sighs.]
What I just said - it's a lie. I don't remember any of that. Or you. Or here. I don't know you, but you seem to know me. If you could fill me in, I'd appreciate it. And-- as far as anyone else knows, I'm the same guy as back in June.
[This is a risk, but a meek-looking mute gentle girl hardly seems like a threat. As long as his talent of reading people was up to snuff.]

The classrooms have secret passages, but it can be hard to tell if they're being used. Be careful with what you say out loud.
( because if he wants this a secret, he needs to know the risks. once he's in, she'll shut the door and sit down, chewing on her lip. ... she should stop that- but she doesn't. )
I won't tell anyone. I'll fill you in. But it's going to be a lot, and it's going to be hard to believe. But you're right. I do know you. My name is Nene Yashiro. I considered you a friend.
We met here one year ago, almost on this exact date. We were two of a handful of people trapped within the building- we couldn't open any doors or windows, and we wound up being trapped here with two sets of memories- our own, and a life lived here. we have more freedom now, but we still can't go home. The last thing you remember before this might not be the last thing that happened to you, too. That's how it was for me.
( nene sighs, because now it's the hard part. there's so much to cover- where does she begin? ... oh wait. she can just ask. duh. )
I know the truth of our being here, several tragedies, what the tally marks mean, merit points... also what happened before and after you vanished. Where do you want me to begin? Also, you need to accept that just about anything is possible, and the supernatural exist ahead of time. Or you're going to give yourself a headache.

I suppose we're lucky I don't have to say anything out loud, then.
[The advantages of knowing sign language. Unless there were cameras to catch it, or someone could see through the passageways. But he takes heed of what she's telling him - her name is Yashiro-chan, and she considered him a friend. Not a bad place to start, then. He doesn't pay much mind to the idea that things would be hard to believe, considering all he's been through as of late. He takes a seat across from Nene.
There's a lot to take in. He takes a sharp breath in, thinking it over.]
Start with what I should know. What I've done. If the other details are relevant, explain along the way. If not, I'll probably ask.

I'll try to be linear, but it's been a long time, and I don't know everything.
We've been stuck here since last graduation. Only one student graduated, and she told us at the assembly to "keep your eyes open". Despite us being trapped here, other students who weren't didn't believe us when we said we couldn't move past the doors or windows. Gradually over time, we could gain more freedom- though it came and went at first, we now can enter the woods. When we could only enter the courtyard during outdoor classes, we found out that proximity to the flowers on the wisteria tree would make you drowsy. )
( she took a nap on your mans like this, oma. )
Around the first month of classes, the school opened a charity auction based on merit points as the currency. There was some mundane stuff, but the centerpiece of the auction was a glass coffin with a body in it. Though she didn't die in the case, we had no idea what happened to her. You won her coffin, and were able to save her with some help from other students with medical knowledge. Her name is Nao Sato. During the auction, however, the student council president was murdered. It was handled very, very badly. Shuichi Saihara lead the investigation, but our reluctance to mistrust each other in the situation blinded us a lot.
( isn't that funny? how they refused to suspect each other and as such two of their own caught them off guard so thoroughly? )
Nagito Komaeda was outed to have killed her during that meeting in June. We didn't know what to do to him after. ... With how many more deaths have occurred, we still don't. During that meeting, Natsume Sakasaki also confessed to murdering several people, but he also revealed that it was possible to be possessed by lingering spirits here- had he not been, he wouldn't have restorted to that violence.
( nene pauses, so he can digest everything so far. )

SHUICHI IS HERE?!
[He's...looking very intent. For a moment. But then he lets it sit after hearing everything else.]
....Shuichi's not still here, is he. [he sighs] What I'm getting from this so far is that I've at least done some good on the past, which is kind of some balance to my conscience that I needed right now, so thanks. And there's at least one murderer still loose that Saihara-chan uncovered. Unfortunately.

In October, Shuichi-kun and Rika-chan were murdered by Dito.
( fuck dito all nene's homies hate dito
but there's... a lot of murderers on the loose, truthfully. what can they do? kill them? there's no jail, or anything. it's.... tiring. )
You should be aware that Komaeda-san is obsessed with and devoted to "Ultimates". He was really clingy with you before. I don't know if he'll try again. Shuichi-kun said Akamatsu-san and Amami-san were also from the same place? Akamatsu-san is still here.
( but one thing caught her attention too... the reassurance that he's done good... she knew it. nene manages a smile to herself. )
You were always trying to do some good. Even if others couldn't tell. You organized the first meeting to try and discuss the president's murder, but you didn't tell anyone except me when my own meeting to share information went nuts. You angered a lot of people trying to follow leads... but I knew you weren't as bad as you tried to say you are.
1/2
I don't suppose anyone's done anything about Dito, either.
[Congratulations, Kokichi is now one of Nene's homies and hates Dito.]
That's...weird. I don't even know a Komaeda-chan. [Then, he nods.] Akamatsu-chan and Amami-chan were our classmates. I'd like to talk to Akamatsu-chan if at all possible.

Gonta. And he stabbed him in the back, proving him wrong.
He falters.]
Thank you, Yashiro-chan. [That's all he can manage for a moment.] What is with all the murders? And...I can only assume this is the afterlife. I'm not supposed to be alive right now. I don't know if I've ever told you that.
no subject
The tallies on your wrist indicate how many times you've either died here or taken a life here.
( kokichi might notice that both of nene's wrists are bare. )
The murders, in a sense, are part of that. The environment encourages it, and the wisteria tree holds the resting souls of those who died here. Plucking the flowers might cause the souls to be lost, so please be careful with it. I don't know if it's supposed to ensure we can survive, or are smart enough to figure things out or what. And we don't know what to do about the murderers themselves. There's no prison or anything like that. And with people having magic, there's no way to ensure a prison would hold, either.
no subject
The right to reincarnation. That makes him falter again. It's certainly something he doesn't deserve. He's almost certainly confident in that fact. He's dead. Coming back feels like a sick joke.
The wisteria tree holds the resting souls of those who died here. Briefly, he considers Shuichi - considers wanting to steal his soul away and hiding it because he can't trust anyone else with his soul. Not the soul of the only person he felt he could've ever fully trusted with his heart and soul.
He'll probably cry later, when he's alone. That's the only time he's ever felt comfortable crying actual tears. Crocodile tears he can spring on impulse, but ones borne from emotion...even in front of someone seemingly kind, like Nene, there's something inside him that pushes back. He can't show weakness.]
People having magic?
[Now that, in some sense, catches his attention.]
People can gain power here?
[Someone who might only know the surface level personality of Kokichi might assume this might be used for a foul purpose. Something that made his 'Ultimate Supreme Leader' talent truly shine in the most gruesome way possible. Not so.
He's already thinking on it because if such is the case, then he has to learn all he can. He has to become the most powerful. He can't let anyone outclass him, because that would allow for more pain, more murder, more everything wrong happening, and it's the same problem he's always had: taking everything onto his own shoulders. His pride. What some might call the very thin line between selfishness and selflessness.]
...Although, apart from that. Is it fine for people to visit the tree?
[It's pathetic how he's clinging to that, and he knows it. It's duly, absolutely sad.
But this is an unjust afterlife, if it's made Shuichi suffer again. And he will improve it at any cost, if it's chosen to put him into this position again. Not someone who deserves to reincarnate. Someone who never will, repenting for their sins.
It's almost angelic.
What a joke.]
