[ In truth, he hadn't expected them to open up additional positions. There were the options for students to switch to being teachers, sure, and one death match for a student council position, but neither of of those seemed to be of much use to anyone. Now, though, there's no shortage. Maybe they've grown tired of their staff members being killed one after another. The transfer students likely seem far more dispensable by now.

Looking over the list, he seems a few that would work well for others. Komaeda seems like he'd do better as a librarian than a shopkeep. Really, he thinks both of the two running could do more good elsewhere. He places his hand in the crook of his elbow, tapping his arm with his index finger. As for him, it's difficult to say what he'd be well suited for. He has all of the knowledge, but relatively little practical experience. On the other hand, no one here seems to know what they're doing, so he'd still be a step up. ]

Hm, I haven't decided yet. Me and Nagito talked about taking over the principal's office, but I dunno if I'm really suited for that.

[ He cants his head. ]

What about you?

Oh. Komaeda-kun too, huh?

( "you two sure are close," he doesn't say, because he supposes there's no need to state the obvious. instead what he offers is a knowing smile, something between playful and sheepish, since he's still getting the hang of re-aligning his understandings of the people around him. he's just lucky that komaeda and ranger are two someones who he happens to be a little bit more interested in at the moment. )

Well, I dunno if I'm really such a good fit either, y'know? Not much of a leader or anything...

( which is honest, mind you — for all of his interest, it really is the hesitation that has him sitting here and considering the openings as frequently as he does. his eyes turn to the position postings again, looking over the process. )

But at the same time, I do wonder if it isn't a good idea for us to try.

( a general "us" is what he's going for — the transfer students in general, since the differentiation between the types of students is still fresh in his mind. either way, it's with an almost defeated sounding huff of a sigh that he glances back to ranger again, expectant. you, sir. you should try, is what he means. )

Well, yeah. It's gotta be better than leaving it for somebody around here to pick up, one of their natives that can't stay alive for more than a few months.

[ The Vice Principal had done well enough at surviving most of the year, but even she had only lasted until the turn of the century. The principal was found frozen, two of the Student Council Presidents killed, and he's sure some of the teachers were picked off and replaced without anyone noticing. They all have the same face, so who is going to notice? That's without getting into the nurse going on a permanent vacation. The only two of note that are left are the counselor and gardener.

They can't do any worse, that's for damn sure.

He places a hand on his hip, considering. Amami has never struck him as the type to rush into a leadership role, but that doesn't mean he doesn't meet the qualifications for it. He's not quite the same as Shin, as they're different people with different personalities, but they share the same wasted potential in that department. Leaders aren't born but shaped. Ranger himself, for all of his feelings of inadequacy, was carefully shaped by human hands. ]

You won't learn how to lead properly if you never put yourself into that position... I guess if you've got to, taking up a position here is a good enough way to do it. It's not like you lose anything if you screw up, 'cause these idiots are all just worried about killing each other anyway.

[ There's a small pause as he considers whether or not to add his next statement. This isn't the same Amami that he knew, and he would be remiss to treat him as such, but the same core values that shape his entire being are still there. So it is that after a few seconds of internal debate he adds, ]

Besides, you don't strike me as the type to just wanna be a bystander. You're not gonna change much by rubbernecking, and neither am I.

Yeah... Yeah, you're right about that. Can't say sticking to the status quo seems to be working out for this place.

( natives who can't keep themselves alive, (not that amami blames them for such,) the worst of whom are too desperate and tired and resigned to the way that this place works to institute any tangible change. if anything, that's a difference he can recognize between the two groups in his time here; the natives who accept this place as it is, even if only more or less, and the transfers who reject it wholeheartedly.

but it can't exactly afford to stay the way that it is, can it?

not that reaching that conclusion makes his decision for him. there's still a good deal of hesitation, anxiety bubbling under the surface of his skin as amami considers stepping up into a position like that — a position that people are supposed to look up to, even if whether they actually do or not is something up for debate. he offers a thoughtful hum, something absentminded as he rubs at the side of his neck. )

Pretty sure that coming from someone like me though it's not gonna look too great, with the note I left off on and all. You think that kind of thing is gonna factor into their decision?

( it's not a vote, so he's got that going for him; no doubt that nobody would want to elect the guy who killed their last stuco president into the next stuco position. even so, who's to say the staff appreciated that? mizuki, he has the context, he understands why it's important. the rest of them, though? )
