July mini-event

07/21

There's a crash from downstairs, the sound of metal on metal as elevator doors are wrenched open on the ground floor and somebody steps out through them, barging out the door and leaving footprints of bright, wet red in their wake. They make their way past the lockers, past the remains of a laptop with its shattered screen and scattered keys, and grip the handles to the front doors.

The doors do not open. The handles will sooner snap off than budge— and snap off they do, tossed aside and sent clattering across the floor.

✽ Use the toplevel below for investigation. For this mini-event, it will be brief and the mod will note when there is nothing left to find.
✽ Please allow Shiny to respond first for interactions with Legion, and note in the subject line or brackets whether you are okay with character injury and to what extent.

Leaving Hinata's life in my hands... Not like this Saihara-kun, please.

As Saihara migrates to the other side, Komaeda keeps his eyes on him as his hands reach out to steady Hinata because he's not allowed to fall, and part of him wonders why he's even doing this. Hinata DID lay his ass out — fundraiser dementia aside — so would Hinata even want this, but it seems like the answer to that feels like it'd be different. Between what he does and what he says, he's off, but that's because... Komaeda knows Hinata.

He doesn't worry about Saihara, he's an Ultimate, this is practically beneath him, and his familiarity with Monokuma makes this a sight to watch — he knows he can't marvel him for long or his easy use of Legion as a threat, which Komaeda says nothing on at the moment to leave Monokuma confused and bruised by the thought. Instead, he's trying to grab the cloth that's thrown their way...

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut there's that crack within the floorboard, and Komaeda clingy enough to pull Hinata against him (with the other's help because that's what he was doing already) so that nothing too bad happens... anyway, the cloth drops right into the hole before them like a reminder, and as Komaeda guides Hinata forward somewhat — he'll let go once he thinks the other is safe to lean down and grab the cloth. The moment he touches it, he hears his name leave from Monokuma's snout, but he doesn't acknowledge whether his comment is true or not, but in a way, how he phrased it... he kinda right. Though, they really don't need to discuss his plans, or even him at all!

It's hilarious, this portrayal of Hinata being the blackened, and Komaeda has to do his best not to laugh. Despite the other's inner struggle, it doesn't feel real, especially with Saihara here in chapter one? But what is... is that Legion brought Hinata here, and is the reason the other is like this. He hums in thought after, wrapping the cloth around Hinata tightly to make sure his would covered properly, and to slow some bleeding. He pulls with his mechanical hand to make sure it'll stay in place, and once satisfied with his work, "Come now, Blackened-kun... let's move, we don't want to stay right here if..." He hesitates, taking a breath because we all know he's dying, "He... brings it back. A clash between hope and despair is a beautiful thing... a shame we won't see it..."

Anyways, as they make it to the wall, he's going to let the other use it to support himself on one side while Komaeda remains on the other. His intentions seem to be guiding Hinata to the door... one pat, two pat at his uhmmmm back, go that way.

Hinata winces when the cloth is wrapped around him, but it's nothing compared to the expression he makes at what Komaeda says.

"Please-" His voice is wounded, tortured, raw like Komaeda put one of those wounds on Hinata himself. "Please... don't call me that..."

Komaeda's bandaging is somewhat successful - not a permanent solution by any means, but it's tight enough that it slows the bleeding considerably. Hinata's so distracted that he'll even move with Komaeda a little bit as he pushes at him.

"He keeps- saying that, that I did these things, but it's wrong! He's wrong, because I'd never..." His voice starts to shake. "I'd never... kill anyone, not even by accident, and I remember thinking that I wasn't going to come here so I wouldn't bother you." Hinata shakes his head hard, as if he's trying to clear the thoughts that are there. "I don't know what happened to Pekoyama and Kuzuryuu, but- You were here, I found you, and Hanamura must be, too. Monokuma keeps lying, about me, about you... But you're fine, and everyone else-"

Hinata breaks off, like it's just occurring to him again at the thought of "everyone". He tries to stop, turn around and go back, but he's weak enough that Komaeda would be able to stop him easily if he pushed hard enough.

"Wait, we- We can't leave without-" He makes a helpless, angry noise at the thing that's denied him once again. "I can't even... say his name, whenever I try it's gone, but-" His voice drops into an agonized whisper. "He's important. He's one of the most important friends I'll ever have. And I can't leave him here with Monokuma and his lies... after I finally found him again...!"

Why can't Hinata remember...? More than anything Monokuma has to say, more than any of the other ends that also don't add up, that's the one that gives Shuichi pause. Because Hinata's important to him too -- an extremely special friend, no matter how that had started. Just because the gorintos they touched had fabricated an experience for them, that doesn't make all the interactions that came after any less real.

"...Saihara Shuichi. That's my name."

It's quiet, but firm enough to make it through the small distance across the room, and answer Hinata's question. And more than that...

"It's alright. Even in a fabricated story like this... the only way you'd have killed was by accident. There's no doubt you're the real Hinata-kun -- and you never would have killed in a real scenario. I know that... I believe you."

That's more proof of his character than anything else. And it's not like there isn't evidence to back it up, like the details of Monokuma's story or the fact that he and Komaeda were even able to reach this space. So he's never been more sure of it. This is exactly the time to be believing in his friend. Either way, Shuichi looks around one last time, ignoring whatever else Monokuma has to say as he thinks. They really need to get out of here, but how can he know that there isn't anything else important they're missing? Nothing stands out on first glance...

"But, please listen to me. I'm sorry for asking this right now... but if there's anything you remember that shouldn't be left behind... we should take it with us."

Because, unlike his earlier lie, they probably wouldn't be able to come back to this exact place once no one's left behind like this time. Oops. And if there isn't... then they can meet at the door. Komaeda can lead Hinata there, he's sure, and Shuichi himself will detour around the broken floor to regroup.

"...Saihara."

He breathes out the name, relief coursing through his veins. He's in pain, his head is spinning - but he feels like he can breathe again. Saihara Shuuichi. His best friend in another life. His words are a balm, soothing the nerves that Monokuma has been rubbing raw for however long.

"Thank you. For believing in me, even after what he said..."

It's such a relief - to have anyone believe him, but especially to have Saihara believe him, he relaxes in Komaeda's hold. Not quite letting himself be pulled away, but not quite fighting any longer, either.

"I'm sorry, though... I don't know what would be important right now, what would even help in this situation. We could try to find Hanamura, maybe-" He breaks off, thinking about what he woke up to, and tries not to shudder. "I haven't... checked any other rooms in here, so maybe-"

It isn't Hinata cutting himself off this time.

"Things you should be taking with you? Don't tell me you were thinking about leaving without even saying goodbye, were you?"

Monokuma's voice is oddly calm, oddly cheerful.

"Komaeda-kun."

Something eerie, unsettling drips back into his tone.

"Don't you remember? You're supposed to be dead by now."

Something dangerous.

"And I don't like my executions walking away."

From outside comes a crash of stone, splintering of wood. There are whirs of machinery, large metal steps crashing towards them, getting louder and louder and louder.

There isn't much he has to say on the ordeal of their exchange, information important between the two of them that he'd rather not pry in because it doesn't involve him. That, and who would he be intruding in on a conversation an Ultimate is holding with another person? He doesn't feel the need to be relieved, because he already knew that the other would manage to come out of this slightly unharmed. Besides, his hope has always brought upon situations that are worthy of praise, he's that amazing after all, and it's pretty lucky for Hinata to witness it as well.

His fingers splay open against Hinata's back, making sure that he keeps walking while making conversation. If they keep up this pace, they can get out under record time and certain amount of blood loss, they could call it a win. Monokuma plays on a different side of the field compared to them, and so when Komaeda hears his name, he doesn't make it a habit to stop and talk like old times.

"Bother someone else." Out of all the people to talk to him, it's not like he wanted to have Monokuma be the one — there's two more people within this room, preferably an Ultimate, and this is what he gets. That's enough to drag down his mood with a disappointed sigh, not worried by the way the animatronic, or... virus speaks to him. Sure, Komaeda doesn't have the strongest will to live, and the concept created for him does fit perfectly, just like his younger days — willing to kill himself for the sake of another to be a stepping stone for hope, but as far as that goes right now...

...

...

...?

The ground shakes underneath them, his legs feel like paper that could fold over because of the immediate impact of the beast. He makes sure to keep his hands onto the other so he doesn't fall over, already having an idea of what's supposed to be happening here. Using this threat if unfair because Saihara has like 700000 push-ups, and curl-ups, and jogging experience under his belt, and what does Hinata and Komaeda have? A bleeding out body, and a sickly disposition which won't be doing much for them. "It seems my being here have gotten you two into this mess... How unfortunate..." Just by accompanying Saihara to stumble across Hinata, he's pulled them into a second chance at an execution — but that doesn't stop him from weighing his options. He could separate from them, his eyes glance over to the side because if it's him that Monokuma wants, then the chances of him abiding by the rules... is rather high, if this plays just like back home, the specific role that he took under means he can't break it.

He doesn't think of breaking from them yet.

"Forgive me, Saihara-kun..." A pause, admitting his mistake, "Hinata-kun..."

Hinata's hands wind tightly into Komaeda's sleeve, like he can sense what Komaeda's thinking about. The rest of his body may be weak, but his grip is strong enough that he will be pulled along before he lets Komaeda go.

"Don't- Don't apologize, it's not your fault-" His words come out as wheezy gasps, face drawn in terror. They can't have long at all if the ground is already shaking. "Come on, we have to run- Somewhere, I don't know where!" He'll raise his voice to call out over the distance. "Saihara, come on!"

Unfortunately, Hinata doesn't remember the elevator. But he's hoping desperately that if they run to the front door fast enough, they'll be able to get out. They have to be able to get out, right...?
