( nene listens, thoughtful and quiet and accepting- even if he had brought it up, i think she'd accept him with the monster aspect too. it may not be her place to forgive- or maybe it is, maybe she's a former student of his reincarnated- but no one says anything about acceptance except for the person doing just that. )

... That really does sound nice. I wish I could see the school of that era. I haven't met the counselor yet... It sounds like there's someone crying in his office sometimes.

It feels cold without somebody holding them. Small, and alone. But they let it happen, staring down at nothing. ]

...nowhere. I just... [ ... ] When I'm gone, there's no knowing anymore, no awareness, nothing. So wanting that sort of thing, even if I won't be able to know whether of not it happens... still makes me feel better. Like somebody cared enough to feel for me.

[ It's a selfish reason, why they ask for these things that don't matter. Like any old death, really. ]

( almost wrote growls at him, but i didn't want you reading this like why did komaeda growl at npckun. )

Everyone returns to the tree once they die... or so the story goes.

( he looks at how the other stares at the ground, and komaeda wonders why they seem so forlorn. he takes a step, leaning forward so he can look up at their face. )

I won't cry... because I won't let you die hopelessly...

( as for komaeda, how does he feel? what will he do? he smiles, his attempt to ground them, make them feel safe. the only warm thing about him that hinata's ever commented on that made him feel something. )

And if you're worried, you'll tell me a way to ensure your soul goes somewhere... that's a sort of hope that they can't imagine losing.

That first and second years didn't have a CHANCE, but putting death aSIDE, Yogen isn't too different from other schools I've been TO.

( it's kind of like, hmmm, grades are important and cutting down the competition is crucial. is the any different than balancing schoolwork with day-to-day idol activities and the entertainment industry? he has more blood on his hands here than he ever did there, to be fair.

but hmm-mmmm... does that mean grades matter this year. )

...Are you going to graduate this YEAR, Senpai?

( Natsume gives her a look that plainly reads take your own advice, he'd follow through with his half of the promise (picnic) she just isn't going to go through with hers (murder). Him admitting that he knows she wouldn't isn't any failing on his part; he likes getting the better end of deals.

...But putting that aside, a worse year would probably be last year. One student standing, and not even completely whole, either. How many third years this year have died in comparison? He can't remember all of their names or faces, but he feels like it's less than he thinks. )

Maybe we just want to be bad students for YOU, since from what I reCALL, there weren't many deaths over summer BREAK.

( There was that thing with Legion and all, which I think was during the break, and then there was everything that happened in the memory-dream-things, but those last ones don't count. Technically. Maybe. He's still on the fence on them and he doesn't really like thinking about them anyway. )

Murder doesn't impress a girl like YOU, though, so what DOES?

[ It doesn't seem like a place Hanako goes to often— or at all. He's too busy cutting down imps and threatening to use humans as bait to do any actual bloodletting, but that's just as well. Doesn't sound like a place he wants to be thrown into anyways. ]

Water spans the boundary between the Near Shore and the Far Shore: the land of the living and the land of the dead. If everybody here is supposed to be "dead," think of water on the ground as sign that there's a back door nearby.

Does the pool count? But, that's not really the ground... It's more under the ground...

( he appreciates it — really. even if he's supposed to be the one taking care of them, just for letting him be here, it means a lot to him.

anyway how the rest of the next hour kamo-kun can just hear yacchi reciting research facts about whatever topic was last said aloud. it's fine, he'll have to go make lunch/dinner eventually. )

( how my counsellor unlock was on the day of the next deaths... yeah... yeah, he could probably use some counselling. it's not like he thinks that though, even when he shows up in front of the guy's office, tapping his knuckles against the door in a sharp knock. the counsellor wanted him here, yeah? so let him in. )

[decrypter]

[she tries not to fidget too much, but their quiet leaves room for interpretation. are they seeing how to use it? judging it? she waits patiently, trying to hear what they're doing, but staying where she is. but then, paper and raised dots, and her expression shifts - like flicking on a light switch, so immediate and true is her joy, the grin that beams across her face.]

Do you like it? I thought with all the work you're putting into reading it, you should be able to write when you want, and also you could put down all your thoughts, like you're writing them in code. And also...

[here, she catches herself from talking too fast, and pushes up her glasses instead.]

If you ever felt like just writing, instead of talking, we could do that too.

[ Static and white noise masking a constant internal monologue that doesn't get voiced but he takes a deep breath and clears all that out, reaches for the handle of the gate and pushes it inward without hesitation. The buzzing fills his ears instead, makes the hair at the back of his neck stand on end. ]

I was thinking that this is the longest I've spent a school year alive. And how that might not have been the case if this weren't my last year. And how I feel like having flan tonight.

[ Assuming he does have a spare key and hasn't been living homeless in a park somewhere all this time ]

[ He has food at home, what is that look for—-

but then Subaru is flying out the door and he finds himself able to breathe a little easier, shoulders settling. People like Subaru are very hard to deal with...

He doesn't make to stand up at all. ]

I wonder what full course meal Subaru will be serving.

Huh... Maybe! There's a ground at some point, after all, isn't there?

[ ...maybe not this pool, he doesn't know, he's never had any reason to go down there. ]

( it's been about nine months or so... and he states that's the longest he's been alive? komaeda's silent for a moment as he thinks back to what the other has said previously, but his thoughts feel muddled from the buzzing, the small headache... )

...You know what's keeping you alive. ( like it's an obvious answer, but he has to listen to him to understand what's on his mind. ) That hope of yours... because it's so close and within your reach, I wonder... if you'll grasp it.

( he'll pull the gate up behind him once they pass through, and yes, he made sure rokkun went in first so he doesn't see the frown komaeda makes at the comment of his flan. )

...That's something you mentioned before, having died many times, and people killing you. ( hm. ) Had you died, would you return to the tree, too?

There's a giant monster in it, so if there's ground, it's really, really far down. Definitely farther than a human can go. So, it's probably not there...

[commences]

( it's a notable change when he notices the way rokkun responds the moment subaru leaves — an overwhelming existence that suffocates the people around him, a bright light that can be blinding to those who aren't ready to accept that flame. the way he takes it all in stride, where komaeda always found rokkun sensitive to change, he already believed them meeting would be... complicated. )

I don't know, will you eat my portion?

( he asks, because he's never really hungry, and he's only playing as the teacher for the moment to teach them what he knows. what slop or actual treats he made for the children back in towa city, or what he's learning while here. )

...If he's a lot, you can close your eyes... it'll be dark, but it's comforting until you're ready. ( he pauses, looking towards the exit of the classroom. he holds out his mechanical hand towards the other. ) Will you take it and come along?

Don't hold everybody here up to human standards. Is it really big and really ugly with lots of sharp teeth?

If we get rid of a supernatural, its domain may change back to how it used to be.

[ LOOK they're just excited to receive things from Lucifer, that's the important thing here. Their ceiling canopy is going to be Amazing, because Lucifer-senpai graced the fabric with his touch.

But that's for later, and Hikaru returns to the kitchen empty-handed. ]

Senpai says he'll— oh! These are cute. [ trotting over, when they spot the completed cats ] He said to give him a couple of hours and he'll have ten cloaks for us.

[adsum]

[ Oh, that's nice. It always is, when people treat her like any normal little girl instead of a ghost who could just phase through the door and he needn't bother.

There's a brief cold spot on his elbow, which ??? presumably means she's okay, though it doesn't feel like she's let go of his pinky either. ]

[commences]

...Are they?

( like he's confused that's even said, but he focuses on the cloak conversation after. )

Ah, Lucifer-kun, how kind... how kind... he must like you a lot, that works out for us.

( because that means he can send hikaru in, and as long as the other is chipper about whatever they ask for, they should be able to get it. ) Goto-kun, why do you live in the dorms?

( he asks, handing the plate over to the other so their hands are no longer empty. )

Door's open. Come on in.

[ The doorknob will turn freely when Amami tries it; unlike the student store door that the shopkeeper has to physically open to unlock, it seems that this one opens with the counselor's will.

The man is sitting on top of his desk, looking expectantly at Amami. Today's snack is... shrimp chips, these things, and it looks like most of the white and green ones have been eaten already like there's a difference (there is, the white ones are crisper) ]

Feel free to take a seat anywhere you like, Amami. Would you like a chip?

[commences]

( as long as his circulation is fine, he'll do fine, which means he'll start walking towards the club side of the hall so they both reach the art room. he reaches out with his mechanical arm, turning the knob so that the door opens, and haruka can go inside. )

Ladies first.

( he keeps the door wide open with his hand, and he's waiting for the indicating of her pinky no longer chilled to the bone, and a few minutes after to see if she walked in yet. so yes, he's just standing there to keep it from closing, not even thinking about if someone may already be inside. it's their art room now. )

...that he'll look at me like I'm a stranger.

[ Because he's somebody they've idolized nearly their entire life, that even if they don't remember his face as clearly as they're like, he still feels so familiar, no matter how his face had matured or voice had deepened between middle school and high school.

But it's not the same the other way around. And nothing shatters the heart more thoroughly like a cherished person not knowing who you are. ]

[ In the meanwhile, Rokkun's just sort of ??? because how is he supposed to know what Komaeda promised somebody else a long time ago. It's not quite trust, but he trusts Komaeda always has his reasons, and that's what brings him forward, a glance at Komaeda, and goes to pull himself up above the stairs. ]

[adsum]

[ When their head lifts, so do their eyes, filled with shame and embarrassment more than anything, not even a smolder of the anger that sharpened their stare like knives just moments before.

Do they want to go somewhere else? They don't know. They have to open the shop, they're late, nobody is ever around there until closer to 8 anyways. They think about the space behind the counter, something thick and solid that can shield and hide them from the outside world. Retreating there would be as private a place as there could be.

... ]

Let's go to the library.

[ Sort of private. It's a place you have to keep quiet, even if the librarian isn't there yet to yell at you otherwise, and it's close enough to the shop to feel safe but isn't the shop— somehow, going back there, right now, feels like giving up. ]
