[ "Better things to do" is relieving, to say the least, because if Lucifer doesn't deem the monster a threat— or it is but nothing they can't deal with— then it can't be all that bad. With a little whew!, Hikaru goes to lean against a desk, half sitting and half standing because it's kind of weird having a conversation sitting down unless there's cards or something on the desk. ]

"The top" as in when I first got to school? I went to class... I don't think I did too well on the math quiz. My friends and I were talking about it after school and we all had put down different answers.

[ Math is hard. They had a pork cutlet sandwich for lunch. They won two out of six games of Go Fish they'd played with friends after class. How much detail does Natsume want about things. ]

knuckles rap against the door of the student store, standing in front knowing the other is inside, but he doesn't take the initiative of pushing the door open to come in.

there's a few papers in his hands, some marked with 'x's and 'o's, lines here and lines there that connect back and forth between each other to say this word links with this word — this is to say that it's better than the math equations he's putting them through with sara at the moment, because part of him feels that npc-kun will enjoy this a little more. )

[ They try to leave their door propped open as much as possible, but sometimes for the sake of narrative, it's closed and they run up to get the door before whoever is there decides don't have an urgent need to spend millions of yen.

I wake up. There's nothing for me after the fact.

[ You die, and then you open your eyes. He's gotten used to it. He wakes up and... never really took the time to lie there and wonder where he went wrong because it's always a careless little thing— a wrong turn, a false step, the wrong place, the wrong time, him and himself.

He sits up, pushing off the ground with his hands and leaning his elbows on his knees. ]

There's never anybody else there. Nobody real.

[ What could have been. ]

[commences]

( balancing himself is easier than expected, and he motions himself back to where rokkun's legs dangle, and he parts his legs on the side of them so that he can look down at him, he's already up on his elbows. the wind blows at his locks of hair, the tip of the one bang tickles against his nose, making it twitch for a moment — his eyes close, trying to get over the sensation. )

Are you tossing me away that fast?

( he wakes up, there's nothing there for him after the fact — what does that make komaeda? though, with their silent understanding of not being wanted by the world, maybe he's pushing it. )

Anyway... ( don't answer it. ) I've prodded you for so many questions, let me know if there's anything you're interested in... ( to be fair, you know. ) Rokuro Arata.

( he speaks, allowing the name to fall off his tongue, and it's funny... because a few weeks into this school, he didn't even know his name. now it's been a few months, and he could be accused of knowing too much. )

09/15, Kazuki

But Kazuki is a patient one, though, going about his business and setting the conversation aside like small talk to fill the silence, a self-proclaimed terrible conversationalist. ]

To them, I am the same either way.

[ Soul flowers don't have eyes, just like the gardener doesn't. He probably hasn't ever seen himself in a very long time, and if people are scared of him and stayed away, all the better. ]

( STOPPPPPP when komanatsu think they're geniuses. )

To them... you're a half-headless creature walking around, and we could make it worse.

( not that komaeda's bullying a spirit, because what can he do to a spirit... he's just some sick guy about to die along the way. he'll keep the light on him since he doesn't seem hostile... what did they do to you king, do you ever want to go insane and eat the school again? )

Is it that odd? It's not like you'll be able to talk to them. It'll just be more dangerous for you.

( he smiles, his eyes watching npc-kun, and there's not one thought behind those empty pale green set of his — it's like he's searching for something in the other's own instead. )

The rules of my time were meant to protect the students as well.

[ That's nothing strange for school rules, and these sound reasonable— or at least the ones Amami brought up. ]

The meaning behind those old rules were clear, considering who I was. It would likely do you good as well, to think on the reasoning behind the rules and whether you agree, before deciding whether to break or follow.

Yeah, we'll have to see about that.

( following or breaking the rules; it's just as kazuki says, he'll have to decide how he feels about them first. keeping his head firmly attached to his shoulders is pretty important to him, but some rules are pretty much made to be broken, y'know? and the way these rules are set... yeah, he'll need to give it more thought. )

Oh, there's a couple that are pretty out there though. Is it normal for schools around here to have lairs and mating signals?

09/06, Akki

[ Okay, so, first of all, murder is wrong. But more than that is the reason he's agreeing to help somebody he doesn't always see eye to eye with, who denies being friends but will call Rokuro a partner. Sometimes, it's as simple as goals aligning. ]

Because he's still useful. Do you want him dead?

[ They don't want to... but they let go, of both their hands, standing at the edge of the sand and watching Komaeda see something they're not, at Amami trying to reel him back.

They crouch down, hugging their knees, trying not to get sand into their shoes because then their little store will be gritty forever, staring... staring...

What... are they supposed to do, when faced with a stretch of sand. This isn't the play they know how to do. ]

Are there sea stars in the water?

[ But sea stars, conch shells, they're things they've read all about in books, knows that the sound of the ocean is just ambient noise, but that doesn't stop them from wanting to hear. ]

( he reaches out towards npc-kun, wrapping his fingers gently around their wrist with his organic hand. his touch is cold, a winter's chill, but mixed with the grain of the sand that brushes on their skin. he tugs them over so that he can press their hands into the sand too. )

You have to help me... I want to make a sandcastle, and this will hold up enough for us to.

( it's at npc-kun's question that komaeda thinks, wondering if there's an actual answer to it. he thinks back to jabberwock, the night sky above the island, the people he was with that played around with one another, and that one person that would sit with him on the side when komaeda cast himself away. how they'd sit by the ocean with the stars sparkling off the surface, how the reflection would also pick up their appearances... when komaeda would glance to the water, and see those... shimmering green eyes — the way i learned hinata's eyes are green when they look slick brown, anyway. )

They will want to be aware of the weight of what they grow on the roof, how deep the roots will burrow, how to keep the plants from burning in the direct sunlight, all these little things Kazuki remembers teaching to his students, on their little plot on the ground. Such advice would likely be unwarranted, so he offers none, trusts they will come with questions if they need any answered.

He was always around back then, but now... ]

During the night I come, and leave before dawn. During the day, I exist in the eternal darkness of the forest.

[ His home. Much of his being bound here was always by choice, but whether it's in the courtyard or in the forest, he always stays close. ]

Haruka sets the paper down on the desk, watches Sidney take a seat and thinks about doing so too, but something so heavy would be a struggle even for her. So, instead, she takes a seat on the floor next to Clamor's chair, looking up at him and giving him a little tug on his pants. ]

He was saying... "sorry"... for not saving me. I don't know from what.

[ Sidney can't hear her but Clamor can, so she looks to him to help her make sense of this man she's seen around but never really met. ]

[He shifts the rest of the way around in his chair so he can face them properly when Haruka comes running up... well, it might be rude to stand, so he just stays seated.] What a cute picture... did you draw this all by yourself? [those don't look anything like bees but it's the thought that counts

he listens to both of them, though, and Sidney is spared any concerned nagging for today... ah. he can kind of grasp the situation, from what Haruka is saying. he (attempts?) to give the ghost girl a dadly pat on the head before looking over at Sidney.]

You can't hear her, right? She says she doesn't know what you tried to save her from.

[and... it's debatable, whether telling her would be a good idea or not, so he just kinda. awkwardly leaves the explanation at that, for the moment, because maybe it's better if they don't remind the dead child about how she died and how Sidney witnessed it.]

09/11, Haruka

[ There's the littlest bit of disappointment when she hears he isn't dead, but it's okay. He will be, eventually. ]

A big scary ghost... There's the one outside, but he can't come in. Or maybe he can now?

[ ... She goes over to a window and peers outside, as if trying to see if Kazuki is out there. ]

I don't know any other mean ghosts, though... It's been just me for a long long time. [ oh. she whips around from the window and beams up at Natsume, because that's not true anymore. ]

But then I met Clamor! And Nene! And you! And getting to play with everybody makes me really happy!

[ Ooh, embarrassing. Makes them want to stop smiling, but at the same time they can't help it, thinking of a nighttime picnic on the rooftop with somebody who probably wouldn't shove them off. ...He can't, if they're holding hands. Probably.

But the alternative is staying in their little shop, surrounded by so many things to make up for the empty space between them, so they're going to be brave!! Okay, okay, human interaction, let's go. ]

We can do all of that! Dinner, too! [ first thing's dinner ] Then we can look at the stars and you can ask me and I might answer and we can hang out!

I've never made them before either! We can ask Nene someday, maybe when we find some really really good nectar.

[ Food in general isn't their specialty, but that doesn't mean they aren't open to learn. Nene's a good teacher, they're always motivated by making something coffee flavored for Lucifer, and they're quickly learning that not everything coffee flavored should be coffee flavored. Still hopeful about the thumbprint cookies, though. ]

Haha... If you do all the cooking at home, I bet that's why!

Ah, Nene, yes. She's been teaching me how to make those cutesy bento boxes, but I find I have little talent for things like that. Have you learnt anything from her in particular? She's quite the responsible young lady for her age. My sister would have liked her very much.

[Lilith would've liked Hikaru too, he thinks. She was a headstrong girl, the sort to not take any shit but dote on everyone she knew. Were she still alive and here, Lucifer imagines she would've whipped everyone into shape long ago.]

anyway, some time in the afternoon, maybe lunch, amami's gonna drop by the student store. he'll sit himself up on the counter, leaning back on one of his palms to get a good look at whatever kamo-kun is up to. his eyes flicker up after a moment, smiling as he meets theirs. )

( komaeda's hands are in his pockets, eyes staring at the door almost like he's willing it to open, but he's very well aware that won't work. he looks over to natsume, smiling with a mischievous air about him as he pulls his hands free, clapping them together to get the idol's attention. this was natsume's specific other means of meeting with the counselor, using their kills to come and go as they please without limitation, and it works out in komaeda's favor because he had the same idea. )

Ah, Counselor-san! We have great news, I want Sakasaki-kun to kill me today!

( he's excited as he says that because when it comes to his well-being, things such as survival doesn't matter to him. and while the counselor is pro-murder, maybe he'd be excited to know about the methods, and goals they have behind each one. )

We hear you're interested in all types of organs, let us help your harvest!

... I don't know if messing with the wisteria tree is a good idea. What are you planning to do with it if you find it?

That's probably... a little difficult to determine right now. We don't even know if we can find it in the first place -- after all, we know there are people who were already planning to dig it out.

[ When they asked Kouji about it, he either didn't remember or he lied, and the old student council president... graduated and is no longer around to be asked. There's a possibility they succeeded in extracting the box and they hid it somewhere else, isn't there? Shuichi touches the corner of a knuckle to his chin as he thinks, going through the options in his mind.

But as for what they know right now... ]

I suppose if it were possible... I'd rather not do anything hasty. But we can't overlook it, either. We should at least ascertain some things... like for example, if the box is still there and what its contents might be.

9/06 — hiro

( komaeda promised last time they spoke that they'd catch up on conversation of the past, considering hiro wasn't allowed to stay any longer due to maya.

in his arms is a blanket that was given to him by nene, and a few snacks that he's robbed from the vending machine. nothing tastes better than authentic junk food from the worst place imaginable to get it from, so he probably has a variety of snacks and drinks, and maybe he was lucky enough to bag a few that hiro actually likes. he did... get the bugles so hiro could cap his fingers if he wants.

Let's go to the Wisteria, Arisu-kun! I'm ready for our date.

[ The whole— everything, really— takes Hiro aback, recalling nothing about a date nor understanding why Komaeda has the makings of a picnic in his arms, but then he sees the bugles and now he's following Komaeda to the wisteria tree. ]

Even if there were something off, he doesn't expect he might find it so easily; no, this is just so he can follow in the most nonchalant tone with the answer: ]

[ As for why it's important that he be seen looking around... well. About that. With the same trace of curious smile, he leans forward a little, enough to imply some level of private space (and invasion of such, for that matter), and to level his lips with the counselor's ear in conspiration... albeit from some amount of distance that still remains. Doesn't stop him from adopting a playful, purposely shady air though. ]

In other words, there's no particular reason for it to have come down here... which means, I might have done something to make it act the way it did. Perhaps serving some purpose of my own?

I'm not sure if you've heard yet, but Clamor... was found dead in the swimming pool yesterday morning. I want to give you as much time as possible to grieve, since I know the two of you were friends, but I also have questions to ask relating to this and someone else we found while investigating — Narumi.

at least the petals falling is an end-of-the-month thing, just barely starting from the day of the equinox and we'll see what happens next month. Kazuki, for his part, does not look upset at all when he turns to face Nene, upon hearing her voice. ]

The flowers are not falling because of the change in season, lass. Do you worry for them?
