[ "taken over" makes it sound like— but yeah, that's what she did, wasn't it? Especially since she would otherwise have had no business being president as a second year, when it's traditionally a third year. ]

I don't really know what happened after that. A lot of time's been a blur for me, all the way up to last month.

[ She sure does know. About his untimely death, about his "resurrection" for the election, about returning as a student months after all of that as if nothing had happened to begin with. ]

The student body should take as much interest in their wellbeing as the council, so I'm not one to turn away assistance. I doubt this will happen, but on the off-chance that one of the student council members fails their final exam and a spot opens up, would you be interested in joining? You still have to earn the position, mind you.

[ Miyuki pauses, trying to parse that a bit. He's not necessarily well versed in Yogen and what anything here means, but his mind just drifts to the default: if somebody fails the exam, how can they represent the student council? A bit extreme to be kicked out!

[ If somebody fails... they won't be present to represent the student council, so really she has no choice but to fill the seat. ]

"If something comes up"... It doesn't sound like this is a position you want badly enough that you would make the opportunity happen, rather than wait and hope it does.

Of course I wouldn't. I'm not going to ask you or any other member of the council to make an exception for me. I wouldn't sink as low as to resort to sabotage or anything like that.

[ He could kill a third year stuco member in the practicum and it'd be fair, but Maya looks him up and down and... yeah, she won't fool herself in thinking for a second that he would sign up. ]

Let me ask you this, then: how do you think you would have done in the election earlier this year? I'm sure you heard what it entailed.

Hm. Actually, I haven't, really. That being said, I'm well versed in school elections. I wouldn't have made it in my last school if I wasn't.

[ Nobody told him he became a zombie? ...Understandable, considering the fact that she hears this and decides she doesn't want to be the person who tells him either. ]

That's right, your application spoke of experience. Tell me your accomplishments.

[ He's completely unaware of anything. For all he knows, all that talk of his death was just the continued notion of the school being purgatory. But even so, being put on the spot like that... well. ]

At the previous academy I attended, I was elected to student council president in two consecutive elections. During my tenure, we were able to successfully link with a sister school in France and welcome them with a banquet in their honor. We've been able to maintain a healthy budget for our class, and balance out funding for our school's clubs.

Shuchiin Academy's student body is comprised of the children of wealthy, powerful business-owners, politicians and the like, and I've been able to negotiate and deal with most of them if they need something of us. I pride myself on an open door policy, and if any student feels as if they have an issue they'd want to bring to our attention, be it personal or a critique, we take it seriously and evaluate it.

[ Taking his experiences and making them sound professional, even if it hadn't been as easy as he implies. Putting that spin on it, it was a skill he had to take on through countless job interviews and... well, reaching this position in the first place. ]

I'll tell you as well, I got into that school on a scholarship. Typically, students enroll at the Elementary level and continue on past High School, but I only started attending during my first year of High School. I had to work damn hard to make it to where I was after a year, so I've got the drive to do what it takes for the sake of the student body.

[ It tells her a lot: that he's intellectually smart enough to earn a scholarship, and social adept enough that he's presumably still respected as the student council president, to be supported and elected in by snobby rich kids who, stereotypically but also by experience, look their noses down at the common folk. Being able to budget for a wealthy school doesn't mean much, but experience is experience, and is more than what a lot of the first and sometimes second years have. ]

I have no doubt in your capabilities as part of the council. But do you have the drive to survive, for the sake of the student body?

[ It goes without saying, but she has no need for somebody who will be dead in a month or two. ]

Being part of the council paints a target on your back, you understand, whether it's from somebody who disagrees with a council decision, or somebody who seeks to open up a spot in the council... Sometimes, it's simply being a member. You become Somebody, and that's grounds enough to find yourself in danger.

[ His first instinct was to respond with an earnest "of course", but he hesitates. It's as if suddenly, the thought's slipping into his mind as to what she means by 'survive'. Of course, Miyuki had done what he could to survive in the tense environment of Shuchiin Academy. Children of prime ministers, of powerful businessmen, of crime syndicate bosses. It was terrifying.

But, the threat of death never hung over him. Being run out of the country maybe, but the thought of literally being killed by anything was never a factor. With what Inaba had said about "a few murders"...

...the drive, though. That was the part of the question he could respond to, he could draw an answer from. ]

I'm aware of the threat that comes with being shoved into the public eye. I'm not a physically strong person by any stretch of the imagination, but when it comes down to it, I can find a way to keep myself out of danger and stay alive. For the sake of the student body, for myself, and... well, those close to me.

[ Even if he was dead, if he had even the faintest glimmer of hope of getting out of this situation... he had to take it. Miyuki didn't want to make Shinomiya worry about him.

More than that, he didn't want her to mourn him. ]

[ If he had said "yes" so easily, Maya wouldn't have seen it as a good thing. But he hesitates— deliberates, gives the question serious thought, and that's good. ]

You say that knowing you've failed that claim before. But you're aware of the situation now, aren't you? How high you have to keep your guard up? I'd suggest getting something to defend yourself with.

[ Knowing he's failed. As miserable a thought that is, he still has the motivation for everything he's done since high school in the back of his mind. Right. He has no reason to back down, if that's the case. ]

"Adapt or perish". I understand.

[ In terms of getting something... ]

If I may be honest, I want to avoid violence as much as I can. If it comes down to it, then I'll defend myself accordingly. I may have never taken a life, or even as much as broken someone's nose, but I'm capable of a lot when I'm backed against a wall.

Those who don't know how to fight also don't know how to hold back, so I'll hold you to that.

[ It's like how little siblings can beat up older siblings; they're weaker and inexperienced and can't afford to hold back and therefore do not. ]
