[ By experience, it is never a good thing to be called to the teacher's desk, held back after class, and what was the last time this happened? ...A worse thing is to pretend he didn't hear, though, so he turns away from the door to stop by Komaeda's desk and hopefully Komaeda is sitting down so Kouji can stand on the other side of the desk with some distance between them. ]

No. Am I in trouble?

[commences]

We're going to have a student-teacher conference, so pull up a seat.

( he's standing, but komaeda needs him to sit because they're going to be talking for quite awhile. he's shifting through his papers, trying to find the ones that have "kouji seki"'s name on them, placing them on top, and he can see that they're ungraded. he crosses his arms, looking up at the other to see if he'll sit, because they can't start until they're both comfortable. )

[adsum]

[ For a while... Kouji's going to have no choice but to take the practicum because Komaeda's eating up all his precious studying time. ]

So that's a "yes"...

[ He takes a step back, and takes a seat at the student desk in front of the teacher's, properly on the chair because he's not weird like the rest of you guys. ]

[commences]

I wanted to congratulate you on your work, you've been doing pretty well in my class; I'm surprised!

( he smiles, showing the other ungraded paper, but komaeda pulls out a rubric to show the answers on the side. each one, he points at them proud, letting kouji know whatever he's been doing has been enough. it's not unfamiliar for komaeda to give praise, but this is hope class after all. )

So I thought... you're passing with flying colors, and I wanted to talk about a proposition with you.

[adsum]

[ Whew... No denying the relief that floods through him at seeing a page not marked up in red, but philosophy isn't black and white like math is, it's a matter of opinion, of resolve, of character, and he...

... ]

...Thanks. So, what's this proposition?

[commences]

( that's why komaeda loves this subject, it opens up various avenues for students to explore in their thought process, and that's why komaeda can grade with high or low marks depending on who invests their time and thought in the discussion. )

I want you to lead the debate team against the student council.

[adsum]

...huh?

[ It's a proposition that straddles privilege and punishment, especially when being good at putting thoughts down on paper and organizing them in a coherent manner is much different from going head to head with another person, trying to build up an argument while at the same time it's getting torn down from the other side.

It's difficult, but that's how debates are. He's much better at fighting with words than with knifes, in either case. ]

Sure, I don't mind. The student council's nothing special... Do you have a topic already picked out? A date in mind?

[commences]

Don't sound confused, Seki-kun, I want to see how you lead, and if the hopes of other students align with yours. In this school, it's eat or be eaten, but I've been here long enough to know that manipulation of the mind will keep you safe.

( that's not all what this is about, but is a lesson learned if he thinks about it — without strength, one believes they'll be defeated and fail, but if they can use their mind, then, there's a chance for survival, but komaeda really doesn't care about that. it's seeing them overcome, move forward, and grasp that future they strive for. )

We have to procure your team first, which means, I need you to find five more people, and I'll ask the student council for six members as well.

( he wonders if maya likes to debate, it's quite the thought, and that makes komaeda smile because of their positions of power. )

As for topics, I'll find one that's fitting, but I won't tell you if you're the affirmative or negative team.

[ If it's the alignment of hopes, Kouji has his doubts; he's heard enough, knows himself well enough, that he isn't a leader. Isn't a follower either. But somebody who walks the tightrope on his own.

Good thing none of that has anything to do with debate. ]

Do the five other students have to be from our class, or can I choose anybody?

[commences]

Anyone, but... make it a mix with transfers, or you can get all transfers! Possibilities are endless.

( debating on who is right and who is wrong, and maybe someone will start a fight. you never know. )

If it goes surprisingly well, I'll ensure that any tests you fail are overlooked, the same for other students, though it'll take a bit of talking to their teachers but... I am lucky.

( he smiles, as if that's all he needs to make it happen, and he does think so. )

Do you have any idea who'd you choose?

[adsum]

I... don't know who's a transfer and who's not, but okay.

[ He can make educated guesses about most of them, but there's also seemingly innocuous people that get weird the moment they open their mouth, so he's not sure. ]

Well, I don't know how much leverage you'd have, but if I were to choose my five... I'd go with Inaba, Adams, Ishigami, Kaneko, and Kudo.

[commences]

Hm... I see, that's quite a group.

( inaba's intelligent, aware of her surroundings, but her feelings are quite... questionable, as for adams, a sweet girl, but one that can't ignite a true fire — too worried about those around her, she needs to learn to be selfish. ishigami, a curious sort, smart as well, and has almost infinite knowledge — it's not about what you know, but an opinion, that would be nice to see. kaneko is... komaeda hasn't seen much of him, but he's aggressive enough, and can hardly be persuaded unless he likes something, and kudo... oh she's feisty. )

Hm, have we blended in that much...? Ah, who cares. If you can get them all to agree, I'll sign the slips. Now... if you can't get them to join, you'll have to slot in people of my choice.

( and no one wants that. )

Ugh, that'll be tough. I wouldn't think any of them need that incentive of having failing grades overlooked.

[ The people he chose are all smart, in their own ways. People with— as far as he's seen— level heads, and the ability to keep calm goes a long way in debates. And then there's Chiaki. ]

Who would you have chosen?

[commences]

Someone nonsensical, because you have no idea if you're affirmative or negative, and you need someone to adjust no matter what.

( he smiles softly, crossing his arms on the table, and sometimes idiots have a different field of vision — komaeda doesn't care for complete idiocy, but those students work well in debate. if they can argue, love to argue, and make a point when they feel backed into a corner. )

Are you worried that you might fail with the people you've chosen?

( maybe komaeda can choose the stuco kids for maya or something. )

[adsum]

So, Kudo.

[ ...didn't meant to say that out loud, but the point still stands. ]

I'm not worried, though. The student council isn't a big deal, like I said. And Ma— Arisu, the president, she's easy to figure out.

[ She, out of everyone, is a very logical person. Very easy to take by surprise. ]

[commences]

...Kudo-san is your idiot, that's true.

( but one, now the question is if she'll join. then again, why would she miss out on probably jumping from a podium to attack someone? )

You shouldn't doubt your opponents, Seki-kun. Arisu-san isn't the only one you'd be going against, you know?

( he leans back in his chair, nodding to himself like he accepts this team, and his finger taps against the surface to get the other's attention. ) Failure isn't an option.

[adsum]

Of course not. Don't go doubting your own students, sensei.

[ ...

careful.

Kouji makes to stand up. ]

Is that all? I want to catch some of them before they lock themselves up in a room to study.

[commences]

( oh, he likes that. just what he was looking for, leaders come in all shapes and sizes, and while kouji has not the strongest presence, it's that sort of resolve that makes him happy.

also he was called sensei.................... ah. )

Yes, yes, of course. I'll get everything prepared with the student council.

( he tries not to give a knowing smile, but one more... excited for what's to come. )

I'll touch base with you soon, alright?

Sure. I'll see you again in class.

[ Which he figures Komaeda will do just the same as he did today and the rumors will start getting out that Kouji's failing philosophy because the teacher keeps having him stay back. ]
