( the device, but if he's curious, komaeda could talk about what he knows if it piece by piece. future foundation had machines that were used for specific reasons, these were to help those already covered in despair by tampering with their waves, and placing them into a relaxing situation so that maybe they could return to who they were. upon waking up, everything feels real until there's that gap in reality having to merge both instances together. )
But... ( no, nevermind. ) ...? Sure there is!
( he pulls away from the keys, allowing the system to lock back up as he walks over to rio to expect him. he's holding their body with ease, but he knows it must be difficult not being able to flip through his cards like normal. he stands before them both for a moment until he walks off to the side, squating down so he can...
give him about five minutes, and he'll be able to construct something like a chair out of snow. he even puts a few rocks on the outside to give it a bit of style! his hand's freezing, and his prosthetic handles the gesture of patting the backrest without it falling apart. )
How about here?
( it might fall apart if rio sets him down here, but roll a d20 on it. )
me every day looking for the nms tag i missed now
Rio watches as he constructs the snow chair, blinking as he stares at it. Wouldn't that lead to frostbite and other complications, such as hypothermia? It seems like a terrible idea. On the other hand, it's difficult to continue holding a person for a number of reasons and so he's happy enough to dump them in their snow chair for the moment. I cried because I rolled a 19 so Komaeda's snow chair is powerful af.
Rio's nice enough to fold the boy's hands over his lap at least. ]
This should work for now... Ah, by the way, removing him while he's connected to this guy won't cause any problems?
[ He nods to the computer. He's assuming not, otherwise his partner wouldn't have allowed it, but it's interesting enough to inquire about. ]

( he knows that well to the point he can remember his own fears and terrors condensed into one unsettling sensation. suffocation first, the tight hold in his chest as fingers wrapped around his heart squeezing until the muscle popped in someone's grasp, the sticky substance of that in poison leftover. the harrowing darkness that clouded his eyes, the raging heat that burned only a few inches from where he was, and with all of that combined with his reason of getting rid of the disease... it all felt so real. having to go to those lengths with no one to understand his feelings, it was the logical choice.
if someone wants to get better, they have to construct a cure to rid the sickness, and komaeda knew only one. the best medicine he could administer to those that couldn't help themselves, and so he took that risk. he doesn't know who this person is that they've found, but for what reason would he need to burn away his tallies.
komaeda is a curious person, so he'll push down the gas mask to stare at their face once more, brows furrow in thought as he contemplates the reason of their existence. )
The brain is such a complex organ, holding all our memories, controlling our actions, formatting everything that we see into our own personal understanding so what if... someone went a step further? By creating a virtual world where you choose a certain point of their life and insert them inside, erasing everything else so it's all real? Every single action is accepted as your norm! ( considering the hands who created this brilliant piece of work, it's one to be praised, especially knowing the ultimate neurologist was one of the esteemed many. )
I have to look deeper into it... since one can deep dive into the system, hiding away perfectly if something went awry.
( but he doesn't believe that's the case, when he looks at this person, it makes him curious what he's here for. finally, he stands up properly to look towards rio, and then glancing back at the computer. there's more to look through, even if there's no signal from the sleeping pod, there should be something left inside the system. )
No matter where you take him, if he's attached to the system, he'll never wake up unless released. If there's an Observer inside, they could release him, but I can't say he didn't go with anyone else... but neither of them would be Observers. He'd have to find the exit himself, but it's hidden in a special place, and only few know where.
( let alone the code. )
Re: me surfing though my inbox 99 looking for u
[ He'd be remiss to commit to it as a game changer, as a concept was different than reality, but he's intrigued. it's unique. He's fond of it. It's the sort of device that would have fascinated Safalin, who would have wanted to pick apart each and every mechanism for its benefits, and likely Hiyori as well. He can think of the questions that would be asked, the points of interest, because they'd likely be the same ones running through his mind.
If he's understanding correctly, the idea is to force a person into a coma while inserting their memories into the machine... Then, since the body was stable even once removed, were they only written once they were awoken from said coma? That's a little concerning, along with a few other things, but it's not like any device was perfect at the start. Even the simulations were imperfect, as it wasn't uncommon for AIs to become aware that they were being observed. SPeaking of... The word catches his attention. ]
"Observer?"
no subject
( he points to rio, thinking he know the role of an observer well, and so komaeda can use him as an example for the moment. )
You're classified as The Observer.
( he'll point to himself, and then to the unconscious boy in the nat 19 chair that is keeping stronger, which is rather promising, but his body has to be getting cold like that. komaeda doesn't think of lending his jacket since he's trying to absorb all the warmth already, and so he continues without batting an eye. )
And we're in need of help. ( he goes on, ) Say we all knew each other, we were... friends. ( the term is unusual off the tip of his tongue, but he manages with a smile as he dusts the snow off his legs. )
Then we turn on each other due to unforeseen circumstances, but there was a way to fix it, so it's by uploading us into the simulation before our fall out, our memories after that are non-existent.
( that's why some of the students were fine with each other, that's why they weren't aware of their sins. little things led to it, but most were erased, and the signs didn't make sense, but monokuma had always reminded the students that monomi removed their memories, and she never fought against it. that's where problems started to appear even more, that's how they couldn't even trust themselves, but they held out hope. )
This is where you come in, on the outside, you'll exist, but the system — by your discretion — will create a replica of yourself, an Avatar, that's made of our thoughts and memories of you. With it, you'll be used as a guide to place us back on the right track of being as close as we used to be, it's your avatar's objective, after all. In the simulation, you're normally put under specific, strict rules that you have to follow unless they're removed, that's in the teacher role. Hm, if you're placed under the student role, you're just as normal as me and him, but still tasked with your objective, just not as flashy as the teacher.
If anything goes wrong, you can tap directly into the simulation as yourself, or you can come from the start. You're already an AI, so they wouldn't need to create another version of you... it just depends on what role of an Observer you'd get.
( he only had so much information given to him on it, but he knows enough from his experience, and when he woke up to the others explaining it to him in the middle of his surgery, too. watching the videos also filled in the blanks here and there making it more understandable, but he wonders if he did a good job putting it into words. explaining one of future foundation's greatest inventions is a task, but he's happy to do so. )
It's meant to inspire hope, this program... ( he crosses his arms afterwards, looking at rio for a moment before turning back to the machine. ) An Observer of hope... that's what you'd be.

The Observer role strikes him as overly complicated, but he's not certain that it's relevant. That, he supposes, is the sort of detail that would be better to pick through with a person who worked on it directly. It was a deliberate design choice. But the basic concept of having a guide and a person to oversee progress is sensible enough to him. Rio hums thoughtfully, comparing it to what he knows and finding it to be acceptable enough. ]
I see... Like I said, that kind of research was conducted at ASUNARO, too. There was a focus on the ability to be able to erase and rewrite traumatic memories. For example, by working through simulations that would show an alternate version of events, or a machine that could selectively erase memories and rewrite neural pathways.
[ Safalin had said that her machine was going to change the world, and he believes that even now, and so he has no reason to believe something similar might not be equally effective. ]
This is different, but it's the same basic idea. Something like that really does have the potential to make an impact on people, huh? Pretty impressive.
[ Rio bounces on his heels, the snow crunching beneath him as he considers the practical applications and how it might be applied to preexisting methods. It's one of the few times he's seemed so enthusiastic about an idea, albeit the hope part is readily filtered out as he fits in with other logical concepts. ]

As long as you understand the basics, it's capable of many things...
( with an exhale, he watches his breath mold into a chilled puff right before his eyes. for a moment, he watches as it disappears, he can see that rio's enthusiastic about this concept, which is cute in its own right. though, he turns away to walk back towards the computer, tapping against the keyboard as he searches through the locations of the program — checking to see what were the last few people hooked up to the computer, and what data is leftover.
as curious as he is about the burning smell in the other pod, he manages to turn his back so he can lean against it. )
Various Ultimates worked on this, without it... who knows what could have happened.
( that said, ultimate hope wouldn't be the person that he is, and the rest of class 77-b probably wouldn't exist. komaeda wouldn't be the person that he is now, but he's not something that matters, so if they lost anyone in the corruption of the network, he wouldn't have minded it. it's meant to spread hope, and yet it did its job, sealing their despair away so they could at least thrive like they used to.
attempt at having a life together. )
It's a piece of hope! Ah... having the ability to do such a thing, but it's possible to keep both new and old memories at the same time... it'll be disorienting to some, but it's such a passionate device! Isn't hope crafted by the hands of Ultimates amazing! To think they'd go this far...
( he smiles as he recognizes the good that comes from it, practically charmed, he walks over to rio to stare down at him slightly. )
I know, I know! Not even despair can destroy this, ah... do you want to try it?
( the machine, it's just him curious, and not willing to hook rio up to it yet. )

He wonders if it's really so amazing, though. This doesn't dampen his excitement so much as it makes him want to pick it apart. It makes him want to see it tested, to see every piece of it broken and recreated into something better than before - the same way ASUNARO did every piece of equipment that it made. It was necessary to find every single way to break it in order to ensure that it was a flawless work of art. That had been part of his creation, too, and it's why it's so difficult to modify or extract his code without him willing it. Viruses and malware are practically a nonissue. His code might be incomplete, but that was a deliberate choice. What was there was a work of art.
Rio blinks at the question, raising his eyes so he can make eye contact with Komaeda. There's that blank look that he sometimes gives when he's not sure exactly what he's being asked, but he seems to catch on after a few seconds. ]
Maybe. I'd have to know more about it. It's really easy to break code, and if there's any security vulnerabilities or anything like that, then it's an issue for me too. I wouldn't mind if it were ASUNARO technology, but...
[ But the gap between concept and execution truly is wide. It's hard to trust a machine built and coded by strangers without any further details. It's just a sneaking suspicion, but Rio has the distinct sense that it's not up to their standards.
He can't reject it out of hand, though. It's hard not to want to try and test out new concepts and technology for himself. ]
Well, as long as it's the same level of quality, I don't mind.

( from hus standpoint, it was meant to heal, and by being infected by a virus, they learned to work the sickness out themselves. it went in deep, circulating everything they knew, breaking them apart so that they felt like they had nothing, a constant battle locked into their mind. one wrong more and they would die, one mistake and they'll never open their eyes again. there's standards, and then there's the craft created by ultimates that saw through with its use, the remnants of despair are... healed, not completely saved, or having the sickness edited from them, but komaeda doesn't feel the need to see the world burn, or want to watch rio's code be infected with another virus, and watch him break from the inside out. to watch him be unable go control himself as he destroys one person after the other, then design him to forgo that self-preservation of his, then kill himself?
servant would have found something in that, hope, it was far worse, but his actions always led towards hope. )
Trust me, Riokun, this creation is truly a work of art, I could show you things you've never seen before.
( his home, the places he traveled, how the world held itself together, and with alter ego no longer running it, the world isn't just limited to how it designs it. now, as long as there's imagination, it can go far and wide, not only that. )
You could even show me where you came from, all based off your memories, it'll work the same. That flower usually mentioned?
( that could be recreated, anything from the attractions too as long as rio was plugged up, and the computer would work from there. komaeda would just have to designate him as the main source, force the role of an observer, and then manage from there. it's actually an interesting device for what it is, being able to use memories to build everything from scratch, to the point that it's real. if they remove ever coming to yogen, it'd just be like he was part of whatever rio's brain creates, komaeda could learn what the majority game was like through his personal understanding, and the same can be done from his own killing game. )
I could show you my experiences, but... they're nothing exciting. I'm actually a really boring person. ( but that's not what this is about, and his eyes glance down at their stranger. ) If they were uploaded, it's be easy to get a read on the type of person they were...
( there's a monitor next to him that he hasn't turned on, but that would give them the feed of the other's brain as he looks to it. )

He supposes it's the same reason Safalin was disinclined to use her own invention. There's too much uncertainty to it. It's like walking on a decrepit plank held down by sandbags, wobbly and unstable, knowing that the second it cracks or is flipped by your weight there will be nothing left by the sensation of falling followed by the cracking of bones and blood as your body hits the ground. Such risks were for other people.
Rio wants to tear apart and consume every last piece of it until he's satisfied, and his thoughts bounce back and forth, but logically there's no reason that he should agree. Not to modifications and limitations and extractions and rewriting and all the vulnerability that comes along with that. ]
It's an interesting idea. Anyway, You've never bored me.
[ It's a neutral, non-committal answer that offers no hint as to his feelings on the matter, but that's nothing out of the ordinary for him. He takes a couple steps closer, looking over he machine once more. ]
We should probably figure it out before you both freeze to death out here.

Do you really want to understand it...?
( the part that he can't help with is the technical aspect, he wasn't part of the group that helped create it, he's not the ultimate programmer, or the ultimate neurologist, nor could he ever become the ultimate therapist — those who focused in both the medical and technological field were the ones who had control over this concept. it was their time and effort that managed to create such a magnificent piece that was able to change the world, because if it didn't do as told, then the world would only continue to crumble.
it has had its hiccups, but that's because someone played a part in that destruction, but they all did, the pods were used to input someone else into his body. komaeda's fingers stop as he shudders from the thought, and yet it's masked by being outside in the cold that he can act as if the weather is getting to him. he remembers calling the remnants all together, telling them the plan that enoshima junko would take over their body, that they would be able to spread both hope and despair by giving their lives away to her. his love, and his hate, it's what placed him in that position, and how he was able to rally his classmates at kamukura's call. )
After a nap and hot cocoa, I'll get you up to date.
( komaeda doesn't like sweets, so that's just filler talk.
he exhales, his breath visible as he finds himself tired of even being outside. it's like hell, but his fingers move a little faster as he finds himself locked out of a bit here and there, but closing his eyes, he types in a few names, and ultimate titles that allow him in. it shows that he doesn't have complete control, but he knows what should be put in to get where he needs to go, something close.
he's going to do one last look around in the system because he and their tulpa freezes to death. now it's up to ori to say if they learn anything, or if komaeda dies out here!!! )
