( there's various hidden signs that point towards the elevator, and if anyone catches sight, they'll see an arrow that points up, indicating for them to take it skyward. if they get off too early, there's a sign on the floor that reads, "next stop!", so if they dare, they can go back into the elevator and do as the words command. upon making your way to the rooftop on new year's eve, the setup is immediately apparent.
a number of glittering, sparkling decorations line the area — streamers, balloons, music, and a brightly colored sign the reads: happy birthday hinachan. at the heart of the setup is a bonfire that reaches almost shoulder-height — properly set up to make sure it doesn't spread anywhere further than its containment area, it sets a festive tone.
"borrowed" desks are also covered in an array of treats and appetizers courtesy of nene and amami, as well as enough love setsugetsukka to "make 3 people black out," which is probably enough to share if nobody gets too ambitious. the cake at the center of it all is the real star of the show however, almost as big as a person all on it's own.
to top it all off, even under the dim glow of the stars, nobody is short of a little light when natsume and noah's dazzling light show begins. once the main event has closed, a variety of firecrackers are brought out to celebrate with as things begin to wind down. varieties include the classic sparklers, these little spinny bitches, funky little sparkshowers, some little baby rockets, with the larger varieties spanning a couple feet at most. on the opposite side, there's a little table where a birdhouse is kept, and inside stuffed with all sorts of cotton and wood shavings are two birds huddled together inside, and a few treats that people can feed them if interest. if keigo looks at your character from afar, it's fine, that birdhouse they're living in was made by them, after all.
and at the centre of it all will be one boy with a bag over his head, kidnapped by rokuro arata, who sits him down and lets komaeda undo his blindfold — happy birthday, hinata-kun! )

the birthday boy
What the hell if going on here- If this is your idea of a prank...!
[There's a rant building up in the back of his throat, but it trails off at the feeling of fingers undoing his blindfold. He's still glaring as it comes off, ready to tell of the perpetrator - but it's Komaeda he sees first, and that takes a lot of the fire out of him immediately. (And if he blushes a little bit, well...) The second person he sees is Rokuro, and that dampens his temper a little more.
But then he sees what's beyond them. The people, the fireworks that would've made him think it was just another party to bring in the new year if it weren't for everything else around them. Streamers and balloons. The extremely large cake. The sign that can't be written by anyone but Subaru, because no one else calls him Hina-chan.
Too many emotions to count well up in his throat, choking him up.]
You guys... did this for me? You actually...
[His eyes are burning.
Nobody ever, ever remembers Hinata Hajime today. He is never more important than hatsumode, or adults drinking around him, or osechi-ryouri that he grew to hate the taste of with every passing year. He is always... always forgotten.
Except for today.]
You... didn't have to do all this...
[The words are quiet and choked, his head quickly ducked as he scrubs furiously at the tears that start to spill.]
why is he always CRYING
Hinata-kun! You're such a crybaby, come now...
( he'll step in front of the other, using his organic hand to cup hinata's chin, keeping him in place as he uses the blindfold to dab his tears, trying to wipe them away. )
You shouldn't cry into the new year! Isn't about smiling, and laughing, along with spreading hope with others?
( it's not going into the january 1st just yet, but he feels like he's right in his assessment. ) So enough tears.
because THINGS are always HAPPENING that make him CRY
[He rubs faster, because clearly he's not doing a good enough job of Not Crying if it's immediately apparent.]
Maybe... a little, but-
[He shakes his head, hard. When he talks again, his voice is barely above a whisper.]
It's never been like that for me. This day... has never been good for me.
[Most times, the memories he has of home are foggy and indistinct - which should be weird, really, but it's something he's always chalked up to the amnesia. This, however, is clear as can be - maybe it's from the empty feeling that the thought of this day usually brings.]
...Not until today.
[He blushes a little deeper as Komaeda wipes up his tears, but his voice is still quiet when he speaks.]
...How much of this were you behind?
STOP I JUST WANT HIM TO USE THOSE TEARS ON THE OCEAN
( it's not like he knows the entirety of hinata's personal life, but he has the basic gist of what happens around his birthday. he's pretty much aware, and it's why he went from left to right, organizing with amami and npckun to make this happen, to ensure that hinata could have a special day just this once, even if it's a shame it had to be when they're all dead. he doesn't think too hard about it until he's sure the tears are gone, and once they are, he pulls away. )
How lucky! Everyone worked so hard to make it happen... ah, they must really like you.
( why is he always crying and BLUSHING STOP! )
Hm? I don't recall being behind anything, I'm an active party goer like everyone else.
HELP HE'S IN THE WATER
[He should be glaring at him, but somehow he finds himself smiling instead.]
It's... nice though. Being cared about so much, for people to do this much... [More than he's ever received, probably, except for when he was a lot younger. It's more cherished and wanted than he's felt in recent years.] I don't know if I really deserve all of this effort, but... It means a lot.
[There's a gentle warmth carried in his heart, spreading all the way out to his limbs. Content. Happy. Loved.]
And you totally took the blindfold off because you had nothing to do with this at all, right?
[It sounds a little watery, but Hinata laughs.
But there's light dancing in his eyes, and in his smile after.]
...Thank you, Komaeda.
HES DROWNING IN HIS TEARS
( that means hinata has no say, and what each guest decides to do is up to them. komaeda's heard these words used at him before, but they're useless, so he thinks someone like hinata would be able to take the meaning, and embrace it. he always needs a little push, and komaeda's here to offer it despite the very few differences that they have. )
Oh that? I didn't think it was a big deal, I saw you standing here, and thought, "That must look uncomfortable!," and I came to your rescue! I'll accept your thanks, but... ahaha, you don't have to look at me like that...
( sparkling, innocent, grateful, and he takes a step back trying to run from his embarrassment. )
tearblob. is him. he's cryin.
SYTOP no more crying
he's doing his best
he stopped crying thank god
don't worry the night is still young
? Who said
crybaby......
regardless of that similarity though he's going to divebomb hinata with a hug--]
Happy B-day, Hina-chan! And a happy new year! [its not time for that yet,] Ahaha! It's so cool that you grow older with the earth! You're like siblings!
[th thats not how that works either,]
is him!!!
[That's the only thing he can let out at first, because he's not expecting it. But then slowly, and then more securely, he's hugging Subaru back. At first a little overwhelmed, but then the last bit gets a wet laugh out of him.]
I... don't know if it really works like that. [It gets into all sorts of weird territory like anthropomorphizing the earth to have parents, or becoming siblings with a lot of strangers. Neither is more than Hinata is really equipped to consider right now.] But... Thank you, Akehoshi. For everything you did for this.
[His voice shakes a little, but hopefully it's not too audible. It's hard for it not to, thinking of the sign with his name on it.]

[the hug is nice, and subaru sinks into it for a moment before gently releasing the other.
not entirely. he's still got a grip on hinata.]
There's one more thing for you from me, since I didn't have time to get a real present for you~. Want it now?
no subject
Friends thank each other when they do something amazing for each other, you know.
[Hinata thinks that for Akehoshi, it probably seems like just a natural thing to do.
But for him, it's amazing. Precious and special, something to cherish even if he's too choked up on his own emotions to put that into words.
He hopes he isn't visibly teary, gently patting where Akehoshi is still holding onto him.]
It's real if you're giving me something, isn't it? Go ahead.

Heheh... It's an old class tradition, so I hope you enjoy it!
[something 3a does for everyone's birthday, and something that's no doubt been passed along to his own class as a result -- subaru brings hinata close to the cake and slides a hand up to his hair, gripping slightly before pushing him face first into it.]
To good health and good fortune, eat up!!

Mostly it's so they can go in for a hug that Hinata is unable to retaliate ]
Ani! Happy birthday! Were you surprised?
no subject
It's terrible, really, that he's tied up, because he might actually cry for real and doesn't have any way to brush his tears away with his hands bound.
But Hinata drops his head, buries it in Keigo's fluffy hair. The very best he can do to hide any evidence. He feels so overwhelmed.]
I was. I was... really, really surprised. [And then, quieter:] ...Thank you, Kogamo.
no subject
That's my line, Ani. Thank you for being here, and back then, too.
no subject
...You don't have to thank me for something like that. [Silly. Silly little duck, don't make him cry over that.] I'll always be here when you need me to be.
[He wasn't, before. But now he can be.]

[ It's always nice to hear, as much as promises like these make the fear spike way up, mind running a mile a minute over all the possibilities Hinata wouldn't be there when they needed him, whether by choice or not. They think to graduation, when he can't.
... ]
I know somewhere you can be right now: cutting your cake, so we can have cake! You have to make a wish on the candles, too!
[ Hinata's birthday present is npckun finally untying him so he doesn't spend the rest of the thread with his hands behind his back. ]

Nene...
[He feels a little bad, if only because he's tried to keep to what he promised that day - no verbal words, even going so far as to keep a small notebook on him for when they don't have the journal ready, so he can keep meeting her halfway if and until she chooses to communicate vocally again. But it's hard not to, when he feels that much emotion thrumming in his chest.
He blushes when she kisses his cheek, embarrassed, but he's smiling warmly as he pulls that book out now.]
Thank you, Nene. I'm really happy you're here.

of course i'm here. you're my big brother, after all! we're going to make tonight wonderful for you!
no subject
Even so... It means a lot. I'm not really... used to having something like this done for me, really.
[There's a second where he wonders if he shouldn't have written that, maybe, because isn't it better not to be that open about such a thing...? But... if there's anyone he'd feel comfortable saying that to, it would be Nene.]
no subject
nene knows. she knows his own family... didn't value him at all. the way he asked so long ago, even her? it rings in her mind. but they're dead. they're all dead and all they have is each other, so quietly, she squeezes his hand in hers and smiles. )
then we have a lot to make up for.

Happy birthday, Hajime! May this year be one full of joy for you.
[why wouldn't they do this for him? there's nothing that says New Year and his birthday can't be an equal moment of importance. in this place, where death is not always far, it's even more important to celebrate.]
no subject
Thank you, Helena... I'd say hopefully it's a better one, but it already has to be if it's starting out like this.
[nobody tell him what's going to happen at midnight]
not his beautiful smile...
[and she nods, because even in this hell school they can still find small pockets of joy to make life bearable.]
I don't know if anyone else has said it yet, but also, congratulations on getting through another year. Do you know what you're going to wish for, when it's time?
soft... it's so soft, I miss that artist every day
[There's a lot still ahead of them, after all... But Hinata will do everything he can to protect this fragile happiness.
He hums though, shoes scritching against the roof's surface as he shifts his weight. A wish, huh... That's a little hard, actually, because...
Hinata laughs, rubs the back of his neck.]
It's kind of hard to think of a wish when it feels like so many got fulfilled tonight. But maybe... [He trails off.] ...Ah, I guess they don't come true if you say it, huh?
