( there's various hidden signs that point towards the elevator, and if anyone catches sight, they'll see an arrow that points up, indicating for them to take it skyward. if they get off too early, there's a sign on the floor that reads, "next stop!", so if they dare, they can go back into the elevator and do as the words command. upon making your way to the rooftop on new year's eve, the setup is immediately apparent.
a number of glittering, sparkling decorations line the area — streamers, balloons, music, and a brightly colored sign the reads: happy birthday hinachan. at the heart of the setup is a bonfire that reaches almost shoulder-height — properly set up to make sure it doesn't spread anywhere further than its containment area, it sets a festive tone.
"borrowed" desks are also covered in an array of treats and appetizers courtesy of nene and amami, as well as enough love setsugetsukka to "make 3 people black out," which is probably enough to share if nobody gets too ambitious. the cake at the center of it all is the real star of the show however, almost as big as a person all on it's own.
to top it all off, even under the dim glow of the stars, nobody is short of a little light when natsume and noah's dazzling light show begins. once the main event has closed, a variety of firecrackers are brought out to celebrate with as things begin to wind down. varieties include the classic sparklers, these little spinny bitches, funky little sparkshowers, some little baby rockets, with the larger varieties spanning a couple feet at most. on the opposite side, there's a little table where a birdhouse is kept, and inside stuffed with all sorts of cotton and wood shavings are two birds huddled together inside, and a few treats that people can feed them if interest. if keigo looks at your character from afar, it's fine, that birdhouse they're living in was made by them, after all.
and at the centre of it all will be one boy with a bag over his head, kidnapped by rokuro arata, who sits him down and lets komaeda undo his blindfold — happy birthday, hinata-kun! )

why is he always CRYING
Hinata-kun! You're such a crybaby, come now...
( he'll step in front of the other, using his organic hand to cup hinata's chin, keeping him in place as he uses the blindfold to dab his tears, trying to wipe them away. )
You shouldn't cry into the new year! Isn't about smiling, and laughing, along with spreading hope with others?
( it's not going into the january 1st just yet, but he feels like he's right in his assessment. ) So enough tears.
because THINGS are always HAPPENING that make him CRY
[He rubs faster, because clearly he's not doing a good enough job of Not Crying if it's immediately apparent.]
Maybe... a little, but-
[He shakes his head, hard. When he talks again, his voice is barely above a whisper.]
It's never been like that for me. This day... has never been good for me.
[Most times, the memories he has of home are foggy and indistinct - which should be weird, really, but it's something he's always chalked up to the amnesia. This, however, is clear as can be - maybe it's from the empty feeling that the thought of this day usually brings.]
...Not until today.
[He blushes a little deeper as Komaeda wipes up his tears, but his voice is still quiet when he speaks.]
...How much of this were you behind?
STOP I JUST WANT HIM TO USE THOSE TEARS ON THE OCEAN
( it's not like he knows the entirety of hinata's personal life, but he has the basic gist of what happens around his birthday. he's pretty much aware, and it's why he went from left to right, organizing with amami and npckun to make this happen, to ensure that hinata could have a special day just this once, even if it's a shame it had to be when they're all dead. he doesn't think too hard about it until he's sure the tears are gone, and once they are, he pulls away. )
How lucky! Everyone worked so hard to make it happen... ah, they must really like you.
( why is he always crying and BLUSHING STOP! )
Hm? I don't recall being behind anything, I'm an active party goer like everyone else.
HELP HE'S IN THE WATER
[He should be glaring at him, but somehow he finds himself smiling instead.]
It's... nice though. Being cared about so much, for people to do this much... [More than he's ever received, probably, except for when he was a lot younger. It's more cherished and wanted than he's felt in recent years.] I don't know if I really deserve all of this effort, but... It means a lot.
[There's a gentle warmth carried in his heart, spreading all the way out to his limbs. Content. Happy. Loved.]
And you totally took the blindfold off because you had nothing to do with this at all, right?
[It sounds a little watery, but Hinata laughs.
But there's light dancing in his eyes, and in his smile after.]
...Thank you, Komaeda.
HES DROWNING IN HIS TEARS
( that means hinata has no say, and what each guest decides to do is up to them. komaeda's heard these words used at him before, but they're useless, so he thinks someone like hinata would be able to take the meaning, and embrace it. he always needs a little push, and komaeda's here to offer it despite the very few differences that they have. )
Oh that? I didn't think it was a big deal, I saw you standing here, and thought, "That must look uncomfortable!," and I came to your rescue! I'll accept your thanks, but... ahaha, you don't have to look at me like that...
( sparkling, innocent, grateful, and he takes a step back trying to run from his embarrassment. )
tearblob. is him. he's cryin.
[Hinata realizes a beat after the second part that he's perhaps looked at Komaeda a little too long. He adverts his gaze, just a bit bashful - and after the words that follow, somehow a little pleased. If he wasn't sure before, he is now. It's okay though, they can both be embarrassed together.]
You just happened to, huh? [He's grinning, much less watery, as he reaches out to catch Komaeda's sleeve. Come back.] We can call it that. In any case... you're welcome.
[Seeing Komaeda embarrassed isn't a better present than this whole party combined, but it's still pretty good.]
SYTOP no more crying
( he teases, allowing him to catch his sleeve, and komaeda walks forward as if he has no choice. it is birthday boy's party, so he can't cause too many problems. it's why he'll be leaving soon, and so he looks off to the side as they converse, and he wonders what he can do after he's finished being called out. )
Ah... Happy Birthday, Hinata-kun! You're turning... twenty-one, today?
( he knows that's not the answer, but hinata looks too young for that to happen. the color of his eyes one shade less, he isn't that person yet, but he's getting there, a place like this can't rush it. )
he's doing his best
Hey... I think I get to be a little sentimental today of all days, when somebody is actually celebrating my birthday for once.
[He deserves it, as a treat!!! Not that all of this hasn't been...
He's never had this many friends to celebrate with, or a cake this big, or a sign declaring not that it's a new year but Hinata's own birthday. His heart is still humming with it.]
Come on, though, I know I lost a lot of time but it's not that much... I should just be seventeen.
[Should be, he has to say, because there's a persistent worry hanging over his shoulders. Hinata knows he lost time, knows Komaeda is a little taller - but he doesn't really know how much he's forgotten, does he?]
he stopped crying thank god
( a little too packed, where komaeda will have to disappear when hinata's not looking to live, and breathe, and now feel locked in by all the party goers. that said, komaeda tugs a little at the fabric that hinata's holding, trying to slip it out his fingers so that he has full, and complete control over his movements. it's hard when he acts cute about it so he's stuck in place. )
Seventeen... Happy 17th Birthday, Hinata-kun! Many more to come...!
( his life expectancy lasts longer than most, but he's confident in his words. many more to come, even though they won't be the best of days, at least one of them happens to be. )
don't worry the night is still young
[Well, that he remembers anyway... God he hopes that isn't part of what he's forgotten, that would really suck.
A shame that he needs his hand, though... Hinata's kind of enjoying both holding onto Komaeda and the fact he's not trying especially hard to break away, so he'll have to bear with Hinata holding onto him for a little longer. It's his birthday, after all.]
...Thank you. [The emotion catches at his voice a little, smile getting softer.] I don't know if any will ever compare to today... but I hope we can have even more days like this.
[There's a promise in the words - to get out of here, to survive long enough to have many more wonderful birthdays like this. The hope that Komaeda, that everyone, can be there to share it with him again.]
? Who said
( it comes off like a command, but playful enough that there's no ill will behind it. how long has it been since he celebrated hinata's birthday, or even spoke about it with him on what they'd do. it's not the same as they chatted about a long time ago, but it's actually happened, and that's what matters. he didn't break his promise.
as a birthday present, he'll stand with the other attached to him, and komaeda's eyes drop to see where they're touching. it's gentle, and he knows hinata won't hurt him, but it still causes some embarrassment as he keeps his smile in place. how long will he have until he has to let go, pushing hinata away to keep him out harm's way? )
You'll have tons of days like this, ah... I have something for you! If you let me go, I can get it.
( ...! )
