( there's various hidden signs that point towards the elevator, and if anyone catches sight, they'll see an arrow that points up, indicating for them to take it skyward. if they get off too early, there's a sign on the floor that reads, "next stop!", so if they dare, they can go back into the elevator and do as the words command. upon making your way to the rooftop on new year's eve, the setup is immediately apparent.
a number of glittering, sparkling decorations line the area — streamers, balloons, music, and a brightly colored sign the reads: happy birthday hinachan. at the heart of the setup is a bonfire that reaches almost shoulder-height — properly set up to make sure it doesn't spread anywhere further than its containment area, it sets a festive tone.
"borrowed" desks are also covered in an array of treats and appetizers courtesy of nene and amami, as well as enough love setsugetsukka to "make 3 people black out," which is probably enough to share if nobody gets too ambitious. the cake at the center of it all is the real star of the show however, almost as big as a person all on it's own.
to top it all off, even under the dim glow of the stars, nobody is short of a little light when natsume and noah's dazzling light show begins. once the main event has closed, a variety of firecrackers are brought out to celebrate with as things begin to wind down. varieties include the classic sparklers, these little spinny bitches, funky little sparkshowers, some little baby rockets, with the larger varieties spanning a couple feet at most. on the opposite side, there's a little table where a birdhouse is kept, and inside stuffed with all sorts of cotton and wood shavings are two birds huddled together inside, and a few treats that people can feed them if interest. if keigo looks at your character from afar, it's fine, that birdhouse they're living in was made by them, after all.
and at the centre of it all will be one boy with a bag over his head, kidnapped by rokuro arata, who sits him down and lets komaeda undo his blindfold — happy birthday, hinata-kun! )

subaru's just as amazed at the affair as komaeda is, it reminds me of this, hence why i think it should turn blue as they go off, and they should be paying attention to whose sparkler is father than the other. most likely komaeda's, because it's still in the sky going forward as subaru's finally hits the ground, spinning within the snow making a small little tornado. the sparks are till bright blue, and the one komaeda has is skating along the ground. )
Really? You should see what it looks like to light a fire pit that's covered in snow.
no subject
yeah subaru doesn't care for the competition anymore, he's gonna when he's under komaeda's command, but for right now he's enjoying the lightshow... that is so cool. he wants to do it again, reaching for another spinny sparker.]
Do you think we can make one with all the rocks everyone's won from Keigo's box?
no subject
( they're sitting in a bag in his room as he watches the blue then the white sprinkle and mix together, because of the snow. )
I retrieved Rokkun's gift out of them, so I don't need the majority anymore. We'd have to place them together into masonry blocks, though.
( he'll light another one, watching the item spin off the rooftop with the others, and once it hits the ground, there's three of them twirling about, but not as fast as the third. )
no subject
Sounds like fun~. A perfect winter activity! We'll roast marshmallows and rice over it~.
[maybe not at the same time. but maybe so at the same time.
notably, he isn't gonna pry about rokuro.]
no subject
( he looks over to where shin is, knowing that he's the soup guy before he turns back to subaru. )
Some people here would like that too... I'm glad they can enjoy themselves on Hinata-kun's birthday.
no subject
I don't wanna go back down just to make some for everyone though, but you're right~... I'll do it tomorrow, it'll be a nice way to start the new year. ♪
[with a nice warm breakfast... rip.]
Speaking of Hina-chan, I didn't realize he was such an easy crier~. I really wanna tease him about it, but I'm resisting since it's a special day.
no subject
( for someone who is distancing and getting himself in trouble, he needs other things. as long as he can engage in certain aspects that doesn't bump against that sore spot, or peel up his fresh scab so that he bleeds over himself and others, he'll be fine. he looks back to subaru who is someone more welcomed than komaeda, and so he carries the idea on. )
I'm no good at using my hands, so maybe I can leave it to you and him.
( with a smile, while him and shin may not have the best relationship here, he wonders if his past self would have wanted this for him. komaeda can grant that one mental request. )
You couldn't tell? All he's done this school year is cry, ah... he doesn't do it much back home anymore. ( ... ) So you should tease, it'll be good for him.
( when he loses the chance to even do that, there's nothing wrong with living in the moment that he can now. )
no subject
How long've you and Hina-chan known each, anyway? Are you like, me and Natsume? Or childhood friends?
[he doubts it's the latter given how komaeda is, but]
no subject
( or something like that, but the base of their relationship and how he knows it, they're just classmates. he finally sits down on his rear end, bringing his knees up to his chest as he picks up another one of those sparklers. )
So no different than here, you and Sakasaki-kun are just classmates too, right?
( the just is there in case subaru wants to correct him, so that's done purposefully. )
no subject
[of course he's gonna correct komaeda, it's thoughtless immediate and happily said, because it doesn't matter how many times he has to say it to others and how many times natsume denies it he knows the truth. the other sitting down makes him want to be closer to the roof too, so subaru'll actually lay down... cold... but he can see the sky this way, komaeda in one peripheral and the faint movement of the rest in the other.
... cold...]
I meant more like, by years~. Natsume and I've been friends for three now. [... wow... three years...] Time really flew by, huh... So much for growing old together.
[they can't do that now... his desire to be besties until they're good and grey... subaru sounds a little bummed about it more than actually sad or disappointed, a sort of "aw man" kind of vibe.]
no subject
( well, that person he met was hinata-kun even though he went by another name, they're still the same person, but komaeda smiles as he explains the years. if he wants to be precise, he could add the number of days within the simulation, but that doesn't mean the five years he's known hinata means they've been friends. hint, he says "known," and not, "we've been friends," because he's known of the other's existence, but their friendship wasn't made until like a year ago.
...well, if they can call it a friendship. )
Hm? You wanted to die together with him, maybe you did, but your soul was so young that you both came here the way you are.
( that would mean komaeda has an old soul, but they know the truth behind this, apparently they all died at the age they are now, and if they graduate they can go back, but... )
no subject
Oh, Natsume'd never let me die with him! He's got his own life plan, I just wanted to be friends until we were old~. And honestly, I can see that guy living waaaaay past his due date.
[natsume seems eternal, in a way. at least, he does to subaru.]
no subject
( looks at him curious, though he knows nothing, or he'll act like he doesn't, but they've already been over the conversation of subaru's late father. )
If I was you, maybe you should hope to die with Sakasaki-kun. ( he'll pass over the little spinny bitch sparkler to subaru to play with. ) It'd be nice to die having somebody there.
no subject
... particularly when subaru hasn't brought it first, not unlike with physical touches. he'll take the firework to light off, watching it spin bright yellow into cool blue against the snow. a dying star, just before it collapses in on itself.]
In the jungle with my unit. I probably climbed a tree to scout and fell, or got bitten by a snake, or contracted food poisoning from the crabs we found -- even if we cooked 'em, there's no telling where they came from. Or maybe I was shot. [it's a lot. but the main point is that he wasn't alone, though it's clear he's trying to remember what he has and hasn't told komaeda; it's been a while since they spoke of his late-father.
he shrugs, casual. trying to be, in that unbothered air he puts out when they get on the subject of stuff he doesn't want to talk about.
he doesn't know, he doesn't think about it a lot, he did when he first woke up and it's been the last thing on his mind since -- it trades off on feeling guilty instead, guilty and preoccupied with someone else.]
But that sure is a depressing topic, huh~? We shouldn't ruin Hina-chan or the Earth's birthday like that.
no subject
( they wouldn't be here now playing with fireworks on new years eve with a smile, nor would they energetically talk about a sad conversation on how the other may have died. )
Going through a list like that, you must really not want to die like your father.
( no matter how much subaru crawls away from the subject, komaeda turns to meet his eyes, and it's like the other fell into a trap by even listing his thoughts. besides, why is it depressing now when subaru seemed head over heels about the chance to growing until he was old with natsume?
those he can read easily make life slightly enjoyable.
he nods, turning towards the direction where hinata stands so he can check on him, and once he notices the other smiling and laughing. )
What part of the subject saddened you, Akehoshi-kun?
no subject
it's that sort of feeling. the way a wild animal knows to be wary by instinct, the way he understands how blindly stepping foot near komaeda, or natsume, or eichi ends up.]
How'd you die, Maddy?
no subject
Obviously trash like myself died for hope, there's no other way.
( there's no need to talk about it in a bad light, he loves the purpose of how he died.
he doesn't know anything else. )
All the ways you listed, they're hopeful, aren't they? Being with your unit, playing in the forest... you must have been sad when your father died hopelessly, huh...?
( he doesn't reach out, instead he stays in place looking off. ) Hmm...
no subject
Shut up about my dad. The hell do you know, anyway?
[he's searching his mind, but he doesn't recall saying anything about how he died. maybe it could be figured out offhandedly from the way he spoke about yumenosaki, how the industry wrings out dreams and the like 'til there's nothing left, but.]
no subject
( oh, how unfortunate, he thinks, laughing softly because he swallows it down. he doesn't know a thing, he hasn't seen a thing, but yet he knows everything as he acts like subaru's hold onto him hurts, even flinching with a little frown. )
You'll leave a bruise...
( and that would be another sore spot. ) We shouldn't fight at Hinata-kun's party.
no subject
[... but he feels bad immediately, letting go of komaeda and keeping his hands to himself. thinking better and sticking them in the cold snow, the ice prickling his bare skin. he won't apologize. but he feels bad.]
How I died doesn't have anything to do with my dad, so there's no reason to bring him up. Especially not right now. Okay?
no subject
( him, or the words that he says, in ranger's words, to use that information against someone would be best when they're at their low. that's to ensure some personal gain, but even then, he's sure that subaru doesn't recognize anything. )
Are you going to go into the new year with such negative feelings? ...What happened to that smile you normally carry?
no subject
It's difficult, Maddy, I don't wanna talk about it. Okay?
no subject
( it's not perfect, but it's forced, he dimmed for a moment, and now he's trying to bring himself back. komaeda wonders if he'd do better off crying. )
Or, can you not hold that smile if you do mention it.
( at this point, he might as well talk to see if subaru leaves first. it is hinata's birthday party, so he should be mindful. ) Now now, don't steal the show, we already have one cry baby.
no subject
subaru can't remember the last time he cried outside of a few tears shed for someone else, because even the ss hadn't done anything but drain him and leave him a husk to be filled by the love and belief of his friends. he doesn't cry now either, just pulls his knees to his chest so he can hug them, chin set on top as he watches off the roof.
you could push him off, a voice says softly in his mind, and subaru shakes his head, unease at the thought.]
What's it matter to you, anyway?
no subject
( komaeda doesn't understand having family, or being here with them, he's lost that a long time ago. though, why is he saying anything at all. perhaps it's just a reminder that he should focus on what's important, what he has, and what he doesn't have. he laughs, leaning back as he lays his arms across his chest. )
Akehoshi-kun, just keep in mind what's important.
