✽ At the stoke of midnight, something shatters on the ground floor in front of the bulletin board, and the entire school goes dark: all electricity gets shut off, all flames are snuffed out, and the sky is heavily overcast to hide the moon and the stars. The only source of light are the suncatchers purchased from the student store, but even those fully charged will start to dim and go out over the next three days.
✽ Nene, Hinata, Noah, Amami, and Komaeda will smell something burning, and if they pull out their PDAs, it is hot to the touch and the casing is cracked, like something had blown from the inside, and their PDAs will not be working. For everybody else, the screen flickers when they press their thumb to their PDAs, and then goes dark again. ...
✽ If anybody was inside the main school building at midnight, I am so sorry, and for everybody else who enters the building afterwards, please watch your step. The appearance and atmosphere of the school has changed to that of the "void school" and can not be reverted upon breaking a mirror. Please refer to the aforementioned link for details about the school.
✽ As of midnight, no npcs can be found inside the school, including the library ghost, the gardener, and the cats. If a character were near an npc at midnight, it would appear as if they'd disappeared into the shadows the moment the world went dark.

??? whenever you guys solve the void

✽ 01/10 marks the beginning of the final semester, and when npc students and faculty will return to school. Of the ~260 npc students enrolled at the start of December, only ~40 npc students return to school, with the other three quarters having their names crossed off the class roster in the locker area. In light of the rapidly shrinking student body, homerooms will be consolidated by year, creating a single class for each of the first, second, and third years.
✽ The countdown in front of the bulletin board has reached zero, and the glass tube appears to have shattered and bled out onto the floor, to nobody's surprise. The mess will be cleaned up by the end of the week, and in its place is a notice for the school trip taking place next month. Please see the toplevel below for more details.
✽ The science lab is now open. Add will probably elbow people out of the way getting here, but he gets dibs on the anatomical model: it is warm to the touch, and rather than being made of plastic, the skin, muscle, bones, other organs feel very much real. He thinks they might be. The rest of the room is set up like a typical research lab, with all the basic chemicals and equipment: a refrigerator, liquid nitrogen storage tank, sonicator, incubator, autoclave, laminar flow cabinet, mass spectrometer, and a high performance liquid chromatography system.
✽ It snows on and off and the sky remains overcast with no sign of the sun all month.

✽ Please give the temporary locations page a thorough read! The most noticeable changes aside from the usual void school appearance is the scattered void, lack of electricity in both the school and the dorm, and the ability to walk off campus. The setting will remain as is until the characters figure out how to revert the change, or on 01/10, whichever comes first.
✽ PDAs will be inoperable until fixed. Tech-savvy characters may realize that the PDAs are powered through inductive charging, and the first step to getting them (also electrical appliances and hot water) to work again is to locate the generator.
✽ All npcs will be ICly unavailable until we unvoid the school.

( when amami first sees her, he almost jumps out of her skin.

not necessarily because he's— okay, yeah, he's a little bit scared. jumping from void-ledge to void-ledge like that isn't something he's against doing himself, but watching it from an outsider's perspective? now that looks precarious, and it's kaede no less. he opens his mouth. he closes his mouth. he waits for kaede to reach a steadier-looking chunk of ground before he calls out to her. )

Akamatsu-san, you okay over there?

[good call, because the sharp turn she does to look at him would've ended up with her foot off a safety square and straight into the darkness of the void, a future amami has no trouble imagining. as it stands, she is on a good bit of solid ground, and gives him a bright smile.]

Yup! I was a little nervous at first, but this is actually sort of fun. Oh, but I'm not hopping around just for fun or anything...

[...! wait, amami'll be a good person for this, being the ultimate adventurer.]

It's for a little project of mine, and you're exactly the person I need the help of, Amami-kun. I'll be right over.

[let her just hopscotch over. there's a couple islands between them, not all steady, but she seems careful enough in starting to make her way over. don't look so worried.]

( the smile doesn't help he's still eyeing the ground underneath her with so much concern. please kaede do not treat this like— she is treating it like a game. )

Alright, alright, no need to hurry though.

( he'll be right here! please play hopscotch safely and carefully or you might just give him a heart attack. )

[it is a game! until she falls. then it won't be anymore.]

[there, there... there. okay, she's almost to him.]

Right now, I'm making a map to help everyone out -- to see how different it is from the other school, since anyone who's been here for a while is gonna know the differences, and I thought maybe you'd be able to help me out.

and your classmate, since the next jump she does, the one right to him, is going to fall a little short and she's going to find herself realizing this as she feels nothing beneath her feet.]

( he's still watching her feet as she makes every hop. those words she's saying, they don't really register for him, between his hearing and his anxiety at the uncertain patterns she needs to follow to make it over to him. that's probably his saving grace, really— paying so little attention to her words, so much to her leaps, he's quick to see when she hasn't quite got the momentum she needs. his body is moving before he can even think about it. )

Akamatsu-san!

( he's already throwing himself forward, and it's a blessing to find that the nearest connection to him was near a wall. he doesn't know what he'd have done otherwise.

as things stand, he throws one arm across a doorway — curved, bending a little as the void begins to eat away at the corner of the frame that dips into the floor — and the other reaches desperately for kaede, attempting to take her arm, her hand, anything at all in his before she falls. with the doorframe as leverage to keep him on his ledge, he's praying he can keep her from falling in. )

[it's weird, falling.

it's like the world dips, a chill running over her as it dawns on her and she sees amami move before she hears anything at all (and she doesn't hear much, all sound muffled by necessity of hyperfocusing on a way to survive) but it's that movement that snaps her hand back at him, his on her arm and she on his, grip tight because she may not be strong in physical strength but she has a grip and she is using it.

she isn't falling. the world is dark because her eyes are shut tight, but she isn't falling. she also just can't speak just yet, working through the shock of a missed step. she's dangling, sure, but at least she isn't falling. now it's just getting her up, and kaede steels her nerves enough to open her eyes and try to grasp the edge of the floor to make it a little easier.

whatever fear and relief can come in a minute, it's the determined akamatsu kaede locking in.]

I've got you, don't worry.

( and for all the confidence in amami's voice as he tries to reassure her, it's something he can only say because he's already got the worrying part more than covered. his heart is racing, a bead of sweat tracing down his forehead as he watches kaede hanging off the edge as she is. the relief that washes over him is visible when she opens her eyes, begins reaching for the edge, but he remains serious until he's confident she's gotten a good grip on the surface. his breaths come slow and a little bit shaky... one, two— )

Up you go...!

( he doesn't actually have much, if any strength he can lend to pulling her up, and he's very little help at all in the process, but maybe the effort will count for something. bracing himself, on the third breath he pours everything he can into pulling himself towards the doorframe, hoping to bring kaede back up with him. )

[the effort's worth it, the human body capable of feats unthinkable in moments of fear, and kaede struggles with the help until they're both on the ground, more solid beneath amami than herself until she scoots forward and realizes, after a beat, that her notebook and pen were lost to the black beneath.

it wasn't her, thank bach, but. there is the little disappointment of her effort gone to waste. kaede draws her gaze from it back to her friend, unaware of the way she trembles from head to toe until it comes out in her speech.]

... Cl-Close one, huh? Thanks.

( when they end up stumbling back, amami landing right on the ground as kaede manages to scrabble onto the solid floor again, the relief washes over him like a wave. it takes him a long moment, not answering her, but he manages to hold down the trembling from his fingertips, grimacing even as he does. )

Akamatsu-san...

( he really wants to scold her right now. just what was she thinking, leaping without looking like that? she was so busy having fun with the hopscotch, she forgot that falling in there, you can't get back out? something like that. honestly, a little bit of stress probably shows in his expression, but in the end, all he does is heave a sigh.

I'm glad you're okay. You really had me scared for a moment there.

[she'd scold herself, too, so it's not a surprise; kaede'll scoot herself more to the wall, leaning against it as she runs her hands through her hair to calm down more, thinking of the plinking notes that come with clair de lune. they thread their way through each pull, until her hands settle on the ground and play there instead, little movements without the grandeur of keys.]

Sorry. I made that jump the first time, so I was sure I could do it again...

[... but not all chances are made equal, and it's still no excuse; she smiles apologetically, pulling her legs to her chest as she closes her eyes. loop it, repeat, the measures easy in her mind. a quiet lake. a full moon in the sky. a grove surrounded by dark green trees, leaves hued blue by the light, waving in the gentle breeze.]

I think I'm gonna take a break.

[that sounds good. yeah. a little break. she lost her notebook anyway, so. break.]

It's... ( not fine, but... ) You can't get too comfortable with these things.

( the risk doesn't disappear just because you've grown confident, but he's sure he doesn't need to tell her that. it's a lesson she's probably scared into herself pretty effectively just now, so as long as she doesn't do it again... he'll refrain from being too hard on her for now. if there's a sharp edge to his tone, she can rest assured it's based in worry rather than irritation, at least.

in the meantime, amami will scoot in away from the edge himself, giving it a moment before he lays back against the floor with a heavy exhale. jeez, his heart's still racing. he probably needs a moment here just as much as she does. )

[kaede doesn't want to laugh, but it's one of those things where you're so relieved that you can't help but let a little out -- amami finally falling back like that is what gets her to snap a bit, though she has the decency to duck her head against her legs at least. dying once had been terrifying, but at least she felt like she deserved it.

this would've just been dumb.

the unusual quiet would be more suffering for her pianist ears, but she's gotten used to it in a way. still--]

So, besides me, have you found anything interesting?

( he spares a glance her way at the small laugh, a ghost of a smile across his face as he does as the relief starts to kick in — intertwined with fear and exhaustion both as the reality of the situation really starts to settle. still, she's okay. she's alright. that's all he really needs at the moment, so he offers a huff of his own before turning to look at her, folding his hands back under his head as a makeshift pillow. )

Not really. A-Yao and I checked out the library, and there was a broken shrine there, so I thought I'd put that back together. Komaeda-kun and Ranger-kun seemed pretty interested in the science lab, so I might check that out a little more too.

( just so it doesn't come as quite such a surprise when she hears he jumped into the void on purpose in there. )

It's really different than how our others classmates were, huh? They've... really got a system going on.

[no one needs to take their hand and lead them along, or inspire them with heartfelt words... they all just split up and. did it. started looking places, while kaede didn't even know where to begin until she asked nene to come with her to the music room. but she'll try to not let that get through in her tone, though she's still looking in disappointment at the void.]

I guess that's one pro of spending so much time together here.

You'd think so, right? But it doesn't really pan out that way...

( kind of idealistic, he thinks, to see it that way. though he does glance back over to her as he elaborates a bit, explaining what he means. )

Everyone kind of goes off and does their own thing — there's no person who's able to pull everyone together the way you did for us, Akamatsu-san. So information ends up scattered, and having such a big group doesn't help.

( herding cats and all that. at the end of the day, everyone takes their own action on things because it's the only way they can guarantee they'll learn whatever there is to learn in situations like this. )

Yeah, I can imagine. It was hard enough with just the sixteen of us, especially staying on the same page...

[but the managed. and they even worked together long enough to solve amami's death -- or at least, they thought they did... but the end result of who died in that doesn't matter to her, it was proving to monokuma and the kubs that they wouldn't let the truth go, and they'd always be able to work towards to it.

she's sure it'll be the same here.]

But thanks, Amami-kun. I don't think they'll listen to a new face like me -- there's plenty of people who've been here a lot longer, I'm sure -- but I'll do what I can to help out and make sure things get talked about, one way or another. I'm sure they just need a little shove, that's all.

that said, he'd be lying if he tried to claim he wasn't a little relieved to have someone he trusts the way he does kaede around to give them that little push when they need it. )

It's just... I'm looking forward to it. It's nice to have someone you know you can rely on. Just make sure you know that you can rely on me too, yeah?
