I have high hopes for you because...
[ ...
... ]
Well. Let's just say you remind me a bit of my past self. If people have expectations of you that you don't want to let down, however, you don't need to reaffirm my approval for that. My hope for you has no bearing on what you can achieve.
no subject
not sure how he feels about that one, but he'll smile like it's a compliment all the same. )
And if it does? ( he's quick to cut in on that one though. )
We're not allowed past the boundary you set up, off the school grounds, until "When Mizuki thinks you're good enough." I was trying to figure out what might constitute being good enough.
no subject
The quote makes him laugh, deep and throaty. ]
Akari said that, did she? I suppose I can take responsibility.
[ Such a flippant response... he gets why she said it, but still. He clears his throat for a more serious reply. ]
You have been off school ground before, even in this school year. Why did you come back?
no subject
( the answer comes easily enough, because from the beginning he's had no intention of leaving this place alone — right down to his initial skepticism of graduation itself as an option for him. as much as he enjoyed his time in lanling, it wasn't his home, and it didn't have what he needed to do, and he knew that kamo-kun was waiting for him to return... he may have overstayed a little bit, but he had always been resolved that he would come back. it would've been pretty cowardly of him to set up there all on his own just because it was the easy way out of all this. )
no subject
[ If he wants to be around trees, there's one right in the courtyard. If he thinks he can reach a town or get outside help, he is a fool. There is nothing out there for him. ]
no subject
( and if he really cared about his students, maybe that'd be enough of a selling point, but amami shrugs. )
Anyway, I wanted to check it out. If there's something there that'll help, that's great, but if there's nothing, then there's no harm in letting me either, right?
no subject
[ which reminds me, psa to all club presidents, club activity proof is due at the end of the month too ]
If your answer to "why should I let you leave" is "because I want to," you aren't impressing me. There are acres upon acres of forest, in all directions, and you would be wandering for an indeterminate amount of time without even knowing what you're looking for.
no subject
( but that's not the point. )
It's not like I've never navigated a forest before, Sensei, but let me just confirm this with you. If I can give you a reason why I want to go out into the forest, and I know where and what I'm looking for, you'll let me out, yeah? Is that what you'd consider "good enough"?
no subject
[ Doesn't make them special, or impressive. If he finds the situation amusing enough he'll probably allow it, though, but he thinks maybe closer to spring will be more fun when all the bears are awake again. ]
Don't worry about proving yourself to anybody. That's no way to live. Continue on as you are, and paths will open up before you when it's time.
no subject
( does the opposite, actually. )
Some of us are running out of time, you know. You're expecting me to quietly accept that the guy who enjoys watching us go through this is just going to change his mind "when it's time?"
( "when it's time" sounds like it'll be the day too late, if anything. just early enough to give them hope, while in reality, leaving too little of that precious for them to actually make use of it. )
no subject
[ Of course Amami wouldn't just quietly accept his powerlessness in this situation. Of course he would do something about it— if he doesn't, that would be disappointing. ]
Think of it as counseling. You have to break down the barriers yourself, or it wouldn't mean anything. It's no good if it doesn't mean anything... do you understand?
no subject
Say, Sensei... I don't suppose you were also involved in binding Kazuki-san before, were you?
( kind of a shoddy job if he was, but something amami's curious to know. )
no subject
[ A healthy dose of fear in man-eating monsters builds character. They are friends, Kazuki claims, but unlike Kazuki, the counselor does not speak of him with the same warmth and affection. ]
Would you have done differently?
no subject
I wasn't there. What I would've done won't change the way things are now.
( the things he does from this point will. speaking of which: )
What about the boundary that was on the school back then... There was one, after all — just like the one there is now, that keeps him outside. The ones that are up now were set up by you, so how about those ones?
no subject
Sure. Why do you ask? The past is the past, as you said.
no subject
I just thought I might try something in that case. You can't change the past, but you can learn from it, right?
( but anyway, excuse him for a moment. he's gonna get up from his comfy seat, start peeking around the room — on the shelves and stuff for anything of interest that might stand out. )
no subject
[ He occupies himself with his bowl of snacks while he watches Amami rummage around his office.
There's bookshelves along the wall, and according to past Ori, they contain "books on counseling ... relationship books, self help books ... [and] also a little section with crime fiction and erotic romance." The desk the counselor is sitting on has drawers but none of them will open if Amami tries, and the chair behind the desk that he never sits on is one of those black leather swivel chairs. The desk itself is always clear of everything on top except for a bowl of snacks and the counselor himself. ]
What are you learning right now?
no subject
I'm sure you can guess. ( sick and twisted that the drawers won't open though. ) —These are locked?
( not that he expects there to be anything particularly interesting in there, but the things that are hidden in locked drawers would likely be more interesting than those on open shelves, right? )
It might be better to call it "goal setting" though. Counselors are supposed to do that too, I'm pretty sure.
( he wouldn't know; he picks fights with his. )
no subject
Yes, they're locked. I keep confiscated items inside. [ And sometimes he gives them away, kind of like those treasure boxes of trinkets libraries keep for summer reading. ]
My goal as a counselor is a simple and modest one: to help my students navigate their worries. What about you? What short term and long term goals are you working towards?
no subject
( he pauses at this, tracing a finger along the spine of one of the books on the shelf before he continues in the same conversational tone. )
If you want one that's in-between though, I'd appreciate it if you'd return those memories of mine you took.
no subject
Which ones?
[ THERE ARE SO MANY MISSING MEMORIES which ones are you talking about, Amami-kun ]
no subject
( to his knowledge, he doesn't remember anything else — but that isn't right, now is it. )
Akehoshi-kun told me before, that I'd mentioned something like that earlier this year.
( you shouldn't joke around, he'd said, and amami remembers distinctly the feeling like ice cold water had been poured down his back at such simple words. )
no subject
[ He must, if he came to the counselor asking for the memory back, rather than dismissing the notion. ]
no subject
( it takes him longer than it should to answer. it's not that he doesn't know what his answer is, but...
that doesn't mean he likes it. )
I don't. I feel like I've always wanted siblings, but I don't remember ever having any before.
no subject
What is it about siblings that you feel you wanted?
