[amami is easily embarrassed, understood. also, he and meng yao must be quite close if "he won't mind if i'm the one making the request". that's nice... cute, actually. she won't pay too much mind out of that because yes, music and nail art talk is sufficient in drawing her immediate attention from it.
as is amami's humbleness.]
It was amazing, don't let him fool you. I'm sure one of the girls has to have something... Pretty girls always do.
[and like
All the girls here are pretty. though... just beginner's luck...? that sticks out to her, and with her nature-- she can't help but ask.]
Besides, didn't you say you learned it for your family? I thought that maybe you had a sister or something you did the nails for. You definitely felt like you had experience with people who can't keep still.
[that soft, easy tone of reassurance when he was doing her nails... definitely felt like he'd done it dozens of times before.]
[ Even when Meng Yao has been extremely worried about Rantarou's tendencies, he would rather die before he'd bad mouth him to anyone, or rat him out for anything. As for what he considers rather light-hearted teasing, that is actually fair game.
But, he does preen a little when Rantarou states he is someone he can count on. Though, he'll say to Kaede first: ]
I'll keep that in mind. [ Then to Rantarou: ] Whatever the case, though, I am also certain to appreciate whatever result has come from your efforts. So, I do look forward to it.
[ Then, he'll let himself fall quiet otherwise, finding himself curious. Family is a rather important topic, after all. ]
( he appreciates the faith that meng yao has in him, but it's kaede's comment that brings him to pause — all but visibly freezing in his tracks as surprise flashes across his expression. he's able to quickly suppress it into something more neutral — interest, with an attempt to be casual, but flecked with anxiety to a trained eye. his voice comes out sounding similarly uncertain. )
Did I say that...?
( it doesn't feel wrong, necessarily; the same as before, something intangible, that he can't quite grasp in his hands, but still feels as if it fits the context of the conversation he does remember. for now, though... he tries to play it off, laughing a little sheepishly. )
Haha, sorry, I've been... having some more problems with my memory lately, so I must've forgotten. Anyway, it's really nothing to brag about, but I'll give it my best shot.
( forgotten... that he said that? his family? yes. if he seems like he's avoiding both their eyes as he says that it's because he is. still... a sister, huh... )
it's nothing she can bring up in company, even if it was as easy as the other thing, so she'll keep mum on asking him how he could've forgotten something like family for now -- when he'd been so insistent about it before, too. instead, kaede only gives him a slightly concerned look before she moves off that investigation-worthy trail, teasing.]
I can see why you're so set on talking me up, Amami-kun, it's pretty fun to embarrass others with what they're good at. Even if it's for something as simple as a hobby.
[she clearly doesn't mind it, though! but she does think it's funny that he humbles the same way she does each time, so she can't help but poke a little fun.
anyway,]
Do you have any family, Meng Yao-kun? I'm an only child myself, so I'm always interested in hearing about other people's lives when they differ from my own. Each experience I feel or hear about influences the music I play.
[ ...Meng Yao, on the other hand, is looking a little concerned. He opens his mouth, and then Kaede goes on, so he closes it, thinking instead for a moment. He doesn't think they've spoken a lot about family, to be quite honest.
But, it's easy to recall him mentioning that he has a big family in particular. Still, he believes every little thing needs to be scrutinized, with the way this school can eat at them. At their functions, and at their memories. ]
I really do appreciate that you will. Though, please let me know if there's anything you would like in return. It would be unfair for me to ask too much of you, and not even dare offer up anything. Even if it is something like lending an ear.
[ And his gaze softens a little, even if Rantarou isn't looking at him. He's doing his best to be there for him without trying to make him uncomfortable, but he's not sure if he manages it well.
Still, he gives Kaede a little smile when she asks, and it even seems genuine. However, this is a very practiced one. ]
I have family, one of those being a brother, so I can't say I'm an only child. And I consider myself fortunate enough to be considered related to each and every single member. Yet, I can't say I know them all very well, having lived my life not having met most of them. But, I do hope that will change.
( "i've always wanted to be part of a big family," amami doesn't say, because he recognizes that bringing the conversation back around to him would completely defeat the point of kaede bailing him out a moment ago. still, the expression he offers back to meng yao feels apologetic enough, and even if something grateful might be more fitting considering the offer, it's the guilt that really settles in the pit of amami's stomach. something else, he supposes, to add to the laundry list of reasons he's maybe not the best at this kind of thing.
not that thoughts like that are enough to convince him to be upfront either. sorry, a-yao, but you're the man of the hour. )
Speaking of where A-Yao comes from, you know, Akehoshi-kun and I actually got to take a trip there before.
( a really nice trip, no less! the dying at the end part was hardly a drawback as far as amami was concerned. )
I'm sure you'd have loved to see it, Akamatsu-san. It's really beautiful. Pretty exciting too, and he taught us a lot.
