APRIL EVENT LOG/TDM

The opening ceremony starts at 8, with students and staff moving to the auditorium to sit with their homeroom class, calling characters out by name and dragging them over to their seat— physically if need be, and they're much stronger than they look. Much like the graduation ceremony, characters are not forced to come to the entrance ceremony, but the moment they take a seat, they find that they can neither speak nor get up again until the ceremony is over.

A teacher stands behind the podium on stage. Characters may recognize pieces of the speech from the previous year. He takes the time to welcome Yogen High's new students first, followed by acknowledging the transfer, returning, and repeat students. As he goes on, the teacher encourages students to instead focus on their own personal growth, and developing strong bonds that will allow them to reach their goals. He sighs as he explains that the Principal and Vice Principal are currently not available before he reminds students that violence is strictly prohibited and that there will be strict consequences for anyone who is caught engaging in misconduct.

The teacher concludes by noting that teachers will inform them of any important announcements. He wishes everybody a fulfilling school year, and reminds them that they have the power to shape the future. The ceremony concludes in a little under an hour, and the spell binding the students to their seats is broken, allowing everybody to rise and leave.

School lets out for the rest of the day with classes starting the next morning, and while many students take the opportunity to leave, some linger around the school.

Classes resume as usual, and it's the same old routine, with gossip and rumors spreading about, and students growing excited over new club advertisements, and fortune telling ads in addition to upcoming events. In an effort to encourage students to form lasting relationships, the school has set up events for the first week with plans for smaller events throughout the month. The PDA logs have been wiped clean with the start of the year, and all messages from before 04/05 are gone.

Tuesday, 04/06 will be a simple Welcome Back. The day will be dedicated to giving important announcements, including the events for the rest of the week, introducing students to clubs, etc. There will be a potluck with various sweets and snack items, along with time dedicated to getting-to-know you style games and other such activities.
Wednesday, 04/07 will feature the beginning of a Team Building Scavenger Hunt! There are no items to be found, but instead students are given a list of tasks to complete and turn into their homeroom teacher. Examples include introducing yourself to a new student, doing something nice for another student, being asked to identify a specific student who fits a certain criteria, anything that can be used to encourage interactions.
Thursday, 04/08 will feature karaoke night in the music room. There is a karaoke machine set up along with a screen set up, along with some CDs with all the greatest hits of the 90ws. There is a decorative backdrop set up along with party decorations. There are inflatable music notes, cut out notes, microphones, record albums, and instruments taped along the wall, and a box full of props for students to use if they so choose.
Friday, 04/09 will feature a game night held in class 1-B. Desks have been pushed together to form tables and covered in cloths, and various board and card games have been set out for students. There is a TV with an N64 and Playstation set out along with various games.

Outside of classes, the days wear on, and students come in with bruises and scraped knees and elbows and bloody noses. They smear blood on the walls and drip it onto the floor, splatter it onto the mirror without meaning to, bringing along with it a sense of vertigo. Characters looking in the mirror may find that they catch sight of something. It's there reflected in the mirror, a shadowy and dark figure in the edge of their vision, but it the moment they look away it disappears, leaving behind only a chill in the air. The mirror room is almost unbearably cold.

Characters who look in mirrors will see the shadowy figure reflected in it growing closer to them. It's an odd sight to be sure, and the cold air it brings with clings to the skin, but even as they draw close they seem to do no harm. It's only once they're right behind a character that they'll begin to notice it - the cold that clings to them no matter how warm the room, the faint tingling of their skin, the sleepiness that settles in, and the whispers in their ear.

It's faint at first, barely noticeable if not for its persistence, but over time those whispers will grow louder; the coolness on their skin will turn into a cold that chills them down to the bone, and the unrested feeling becomes a constant fatigue and lethargy. The words and tone vary, as do the voices, but each and every one eats into the character. They might speak of a character's insecurities or guilt, or they might leave them with a sinking loneliness, or perhaps they promise the warmth and companionship that a character desires, or any other number of matters that so often tug at the mind.

The figures can be viewed through mirrors. Those with supernatural sight or an adderstone will similarly be able to see them following characters, latching onto them. Items that ward off the supernatural may help, but the only way to truly ward them off is with bonds formed in the school. The figures seem to be warded off by the presence of another person. The cold disappears with the slightest touch, the whispering stops during conversation, and for that time they're given a brief reprieve. But they often seem to come back the moment a person passes by a mirror once more.
✽ The school will be hosting various smaller team building exercise throughout the month which can range from exercises to group projects. There are examples here, so feel free to pick what works best for your goals.
✽ The shadowy figures will appear more frequently where there is blood, fresh or otherwise.
✽ Characters who are isolated will find that they are more susceptible to being followed by the figures, and it may take longer interactions to dispel them completely.
✽ Items from the student shop that ward off supernatural creatures will aide in keeping the shadows from getting too close at first, but their effectiveness will wear off the longer a character is followed. They seem to be most effective when used in conjunction with interactions with others, and especially others who have similar items (i.e. a character with a silver cross and a character with a gold chain.)

Ah, sure.

[ Was he referring to the shadow students? He takes the adderstone and peers through it, confirming his suspicions. Ranger frowns behind the cheerful card as he does so, his eyesbrows knitting. He's right. They've been getting progressively cozier throughout the month. He shivers, almost able to feel the cold fingers of the creatures brushing against the back of his neck. It's just his imagination though. ]

You meant those guys, huh? Yeah, it's weird that they're on this side.

[ Does he recognize them for what they are? At the very least, Ranger can't see any signs that he knows who Ranger is.

He hands the adderstone back to him. ]

Did you just wake up?

( it's an interesting response, and amami watches attentively to catch the knitted brows, searching for recognition of the creatures as the other assesses the room. it doesn't sound like it's a good thing at all for them to be on "this side," but it's information amami tucks away to keep note of for later as it's said. for the time being, it sounds like there may be an opening to talk about where he is and why he's here, which takes priority over any investigations he may have to do into the strange phenomena in this place. )

"Wake up," huh... Yeah, I guess it must be something like that.

( the words are followed by an easy smile, something practiced. )

My name's Rantarou Amami. Don't suppose you're willing to fill me in on where we are?

[ His suspicions are confirmed properly with the introduction. It's frustrating, but not surprising, and he already has all the tools necessary to introduce Amami back to the school. For the rest, he can offer his own opinions on the current set of individuals to cross reference with his notebook and go from there. ]

Rio Ranger. This is purgatory. Don't ask me why the afterlife is a high school, no one knows. The actual place is called Yogen High... There's a lot more to it, but you should be able to figure most of it out pretty quickly.

[ He sighs a little. They're truly starting from square one, and Amami's unique circumstances make it more difficult to navigate. He has no reason to trust a stranger, after all, and Ranger has no expectations that he will. Aside from that, it's a lot to take in.

He could smart small, but... Well, they might as well get the important matters out of the way. The warnings about the people here are far more improtant than the situation. ]

You don't remember, but you were here before. You died two months ago, and as far as anyone knows, you murdered three people and died along with another student... So I'm sure you can imagine what kind of mess you're coming back to.

[ He pauses there to allow the other to process the information. It's quite a bit just by itself after all. ]

( not gonna lie, it is a lot to take in.

initially, it kind of looks like amami.exe might be lagging, but it stretches out fairly long. he's just kind of looking at ranger, eyes blank, expression frozen in place. it would be unreadable if it weren't for the obvious circumstances causing it. he blinks once. twice. bringing up a hand to his chin in thought, he can't help the way a smile stretches across his face despite himself — disbelief. )

Doesn't sound like I'm going to be the most popular person here...

( what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck...

okay. you know what? sure. alright. he'll roll with this. hope for the best, but expect the worst, right? can't hurt to be cautious. though, really, how much worse could this possibly get? from a killing game to purgatory, and though he doesn't explicitly remember being killed in the academy it isn't such a far-fetched thought to imagine; the shadows he'd seen were enough that he isn't too inclined to doubt that there's something at play here either. gears turn in his mind, clicking against one another as he processes the information. there's a lot to ask — the technicalities of that wording there, for one, the circumstances of his death, the timing. the timing is troubling. two months is pretty fresh. )

I suppose we've met before, then?

( the sigh is something that pings him. it could be exasperation with having to give such an explanation. it could be disappointment, and that he's not supposed to have forgotten in the first place. amami isn't going to put too much stock in it in the moment, but he does recognize that, if it's true, this would be a rather generous warning to give a stranger. )

[ It's a lot, but it'll be a problem if they don't start there. Humans forget things all the time, and Komaeda will eventually forget him entirely, and so there's no reason for him to be upset about this interaction... No, that's not quite the right way of thinking about it either. This is a different person who coincidentally has the same features as Rantarou Amami. If he treats him as anything else, it'll only cause more problems down the line when he places expectations and assumptions on him.

He waits though, expression remaining hidden by the colorful ice cream cone as he waits for his companion to process the information thrown at him. It's a different person, but there's enough threads that connect him that he feels responsible. Perhaps more importantly, he had made the promise to help him when he returned, and Ranger takes his promises seriously. ]

Right. We knew each other and go along well before, and you trusted me with taking care of your things and catching you up with you got back -

[ He must notice the wariness, or at least be able to guess at what thoughts will run through his head upon being told that he was best friends with someone because he's quick to continue, ]

- But you don't owe me anything, and we don't have to get along this time around. I'll get you up to speed, and after that it's up to you.

[ The rest Amami can take or leave, and Ranger isn't naive enough to expect any favors or trust. But his eyes remain fixed on his face, his expression, still searching for something that won't appear. It's quite a bit once more, but he thinks Amami to be the sensible sort who would rather get the formalities out of the way than have to worry about unrealistic expectations and demands. Still, his tone suggests that he's willing enough to work with him once more should Amami choose to.

He doesn't linger on that very long, finding that in the end it isn't of much importance, and is quick to move on, ]

So, unfortunately, you're gonna get the crash course. Fortunately, you left yourself a notebook that had most of the info you'll need to get settled back in.

Huh... ( huh... let that hang in the air for a minute. kind of a funny thing, isn't it? ) Lucky me, then.

( definitely sounds better than testing out a process of trial and error to him, because there's clearly some funky things going on here, and he's not too interested in the risks associated with experimenting with them to check the limits. having someone break down what they do and don't know, what they do and don't have to work with, that sounds helpful, even if it's just a supposed "past self" through a notebook. still, his mind can't help but linger on that for a moment; again with the notes... guess that this one, at least, is a full notebook. there are bound to be things that he can check and confirm for himself to figure out whether it's something worth trusting. )

But thanks, I appreciate it. Looks like I must've trusted the right person with this.

( *pending amami's validation that he knew this guy at all.

... though it is a convincing pitch overall. no leverage held over him, no expectations to follow; if anything, it's only the fact that it's almost too good to be true that keeps amami cautious about it. determined still to confirm anything he can with his own eyes before he jumps to any certain conclusions. though, with that, there is one thing that he does want to get out of the way. it's been bothering him ever since he found his way back into the school proper. )

You mind if we start with my hearing?

( why is his left ear broke!! )

[ Ranger nods in acknowledgment of his thanks, though he hesitates to call himself the right person. In terms of those left in their group, he supposes that he would be. Komaeda lets himself grow too focused on status and titles too easily, and the majority of the rest are either bearing a grudge, incompetent, obnoxious, or mixing and matching those three traits. Still, his own confidence has been increasingly frayed at the edges, the strings being pulled out with each and every failure.

But he can do this much, and he can do what he needs to. He doesn't linger on it.

He holds up his index finger. ]

There's silence in the school from midnight to six am. You bought a totem from the student store that allows you to hear at night, but there's a second price tag attached, [ He holds up a second finger, ] You lose the hearing in one ear, and slowly lose the hearing in the other one.

[ Ranger rests his hand on the table. ]

Hard to say if your hearing's gonna keep deteriorating. Once you're settled, you'll wanna think about treatment options.

[ There's hearing aids, but there's also using cochlear implants to restore functionality. Both require more time and thought than should go into an initial conversation with a stranger, he thinks, especially with one requiring surgery. It's good enough to let him ask if he needs help, and he trusts that Hiyori will give good enough options if he chooses to ask him. ]

The kid who runs the store during the day might be able to tell you something about it. She wasn't around for the dramatics, so I doubt you're on her hit list. The one who runs it at night is Shin, and he's nursing a grudge, so I'd avoid that one.

[ He's heard the definitions, but the natives here have a different perspective on things. It has the added benefit of not relying on one person for all his information, and not getting it all at once, since asking around will break it down into smaller pieces. ]

...I see. It's not something that came cheap, is it?

( and as far as he's concerned, he can't necessarily say that he feels it was a fair trade either. midnight to six am... permanent hearing loss, for six hours of partial hearing, huh? though he's still more inclined to believe it than not, seeing as it's such a detailed answer that didn't seem to require too much thought — it's not something that was adlibbed, he doesn't think. still... if it's true, then the him from before really put his current self in a difficult position, didn't he? )

I'll have to run it by her then.

( once he has a chance to look through his notes; maybe those will give him a better sense of the situation. for now... )

Right. Well I don't want to interrogate you, so I'll keep it to one more question. You mention someone having a grudge, so is there anyone else I should keep an eye out for, good or bad?

( because who's who may or may not be covered in this notebook of his, particularly if he was expecting to come back to the same batch of people, but it's never a bad idea to get a sparknotes run down before any of them have the chance to catch him off-guard. besides that, this ranger guy, he's not making a bad impression himself. at the very least, it can give amami a sense of... well, a sense of who's not going to greet him with violence right out the gates, if nothing else. )

[ Ranger nods. ]

It's a small school, not many transfer students around, so we all sorta know each other. Natsume and Subaru were dating Maya and Keigo, so those two aren't faces you wanna see. Miyuki's not gonna be happy either, seeing as he got framed - but, you know, that kid's pretty level-headed. Doubt he'll be going to draw blood. Bonnie speaks money, so if she's upset you can pay her off.

Then there's Sara and Shin. Sara's an emotional kid, real black and white view and projection issues to go around, so she's feeling betrayed. Shin - well, I dunno what he's pissy about, he didn't care about any of them, but he is. Might introduce himself as Sou, but that's a different guy. That about covers it for the idiots who're holding a grudge.

[ He thinks about mentioning Dito, but decides against it. It would be wrong to call him harmless, but Hiyori seems to have that one under control. He's more of the type that one shouldn't antagonize than anything, and at that point it's not really Ranger's problem. Regardless, he'll choose to believe that Amami's smart enough to not go out off his way to cause trouble with a person who's far less annoying and obstructive than the majority of people here.

That about does it for the ones to stay away from. He pulls his bag onto his lap, popping it open and beginning to dig through it as he continues on, ]

You already know Kaede, so I'll skip that one. As for the ones who you should be able to count on, Hiyori's the nurse. We work together, and he's one of the few people here that's actually competent. He looks out for himself first, but who doesn't.

[ He shrugs, taking out a notebook and quickly thumbing through it to make sure it's complete. He takes out a pamphlet next, placing it on top. ]

You were close with Nagito Komaeda. He's my partner, and I'd trust the guy with anything. He's kinda a freak about Ultimates, idolizes you guys and all, but he's sharp and you can depend on him...Whenever he wakes up.

[ He frowns, looking down briefly before shaking his head, his fingers curling. If he lingers on that too long, he won't be able to continue this conversation. It's best to move on quickly ]

Pretty sure Noah and Helena are gonna be sympathetic to you. They're both good kids. Kiyotaka's the student council president, kinda serious, but he's level-headed enough - worth knowing either way. Then Dynamo's an AI, little robot guy, they try to be helpful... Hm... I think that's everyone worth bringing up.

[ He digs through his pocket and pulls out a key, topping off the two notebooks in it and sliding it over. If he chooses to look through it all later, he'll find that Ranger wasn't kidding - it's a set of neatly written notes on those he's met in the school, along with the various items and events, concise yet just detailed enough that there should be no confusion. Between that and his own notebook, he should have enough to go off of. ]

I wrote what I know about everyone here down for you and what's been going on, so you shouldn't have any big gaps. You'll have to see it all for yourself, but that should give you a starting point... Oh, you're in Sun 2. Nagito's got the other key, so I'll grab his for you later.
