[ He holds up two fingers, then points at his eyes and shakes his head. He knows the gardener is a spirit, but he can't see him. It doesn't really factor much into his Yogen experience, though, seeing as he and Maya go home well before dark and wouldn't be around to get eaten anyways. ]

Is Sato-chan afraid of GHOSTS?

[ He sort of shrugs, and nods, at the same time, uncertain. In the way of "I don't know, but maybe?" It would largely depend on context, he thinks, and he looks up at Natsume with a tilt of the head for him to explain a little further ]

If she's NOT, and you want a friendly ghost to chat WITH, the one in the library is always looking for new FRIENDS. Séances aren't so difficult to do eiTHER.

( Natsume's idea of a good time is to teach Hiro dangerous things, like magic circles and talking to the dead, I guess. )

...She's like a little sister to ME, and she gets lonely very easiLY, so it'd be nice if she could have a few more people who acknowledge her exisTENCE. I suppose it's a selfish of me to bring it up to you THOUGH.

[ "friendly" and "ghost" aren't often words you'd see together, and Hiro doubts his ability to be a good conversationalist by any stretch of the word ...but his expression does soften when Natsume says that she's like a sister, because that, at least, is something he understands. A sibling who gets lonely easily, who isn't the best at standing out or getting along with others, but nothing would make you happier than if they were to make friends and find some happiness themselves.

He shakes his head at the off-hand comment about selfishness, and holds his hand flat in line with his brow, asking how they would see her ]

natsume smiles, half thinking of joking they could make a deal like him but, well. nao has lost enough because of him, and he wouldn't joke about that with hiro. )

[ YEAH I love children so much, you ask them a question and they light up because they get to talk about themselves and their opinions

Hiro makes a circle with one hand and holds it up to his eye, as if looking through an adderstone. ? ]

( Natsume nods, though he can only get one per month so I guess Nao and Hiro will have to end up sharing off of one for a month at least. )

The little shopkeeper sells them at the STORE, so I'll just buy some for you TWO. It's no problem at ALL.

( little shopkeeper thinking natsume has something against them aside but a paying customer is a paying customer! )

[ He gives one to Nao and she goes around holding it to her eye the entire time in case it was a ghost that stabbed her and then she walks into a doorframe bc she's not paying attention to the real world

But also, Hiro rubs his fingers together in a gesture like fanning out money: the things are expensive??? Like, you don't need to bonus point purchase things given to an npc but on principle he knows that shop is a tourist trap ]

[ Yeah

Hiro makes a little bit of a face— just a little one— but only because he's aware of what makes that amount money around here in a short amount of time. ]

...I don't like killing peoPLE. Only one of these I got willingLY, from what I reCALL, and that one was out of necessiTY.

( Maybe his first two had them, too. Maybe the state his items came in, the places he found them, is a hint towards it. He spent enough time dwelling on those, though. )

I'd especially never do it for money eiTHER, not when I have perfectly legitimate ways of getting THAT.

[ LOOK there are people out there who kill for money, the sort of people who thrive in a place like this and that's what Hiro is used to, why he keeps his head down, why he doesn't like getting involved in things.

Sorry for doubting you, Natsume... He dips his head in apology, don't be mad ]

( Peeking open his good eye... and he'll sigh, poking Hiro's head with his chopsticks. )

It's difficult being HERE. ( Hard to trust people. ) It must be exhausting to always mistrust oTHERS, but it's safer, isn't IT?

[ He squeezes his eyes shut when he's poked, too slow to react so it's already gone by the time he opens his eyes and lifts his head.

...lowers it again, in a sort of resigned nod, because... yeah. It's safer, even though it's exhausting, and lonely, and scary. But safety matters the most— being with his sister matters the most, because if he dies, or if she dies, or if both of them die, there's no way of telling if they'll ever see each other again and he absolutely does not want that.

It's how most of the students here have come to live. It's the only way they know how. ]

( They must look stupid, not remembering anything, willing to trust people first rather than meet their eyes with their guard up every time they see one another. Natsume'll scoot around so he can ... be closer to Hiro, though he doesn't lean against him or anything. That's a step too far still, for him. )

...Hiro-kun, when I asked for your trust when we first MET, you drew something on *my HAND. ( Natsume draws it on Hiro's arm, so simple. ) What does it MEAN?

( He's been thinking about it for months. He can tuck it under trust all he wants, but given this school, given the twins, he does wonder, sometimes. )

[ Yeah, it's... Hiro wouldn't have used the word stupid, but foolish, maybe, naïve in the more nervous of ways when he sees people meet and discuss things openly and go around acting out and drawing attention. Making friends, when that friend could betray you, or they can die, and no matter what happens you end up with a broken heart either way.

So when Natsume asked to be friends, when he asked for Hiro to trust him...

He traces the symbol on his own palm, closing his fist and bringing it to his chest. He points to himself, then holds up two fingers and gives them a wiggle— Maya. Him and Maya. And now Natsume too. Something special between them, but it's hard to explain without words. ]

( Well, doesn't he feel special—a genuine thought, just him and Hiro and Maya. Whatever it means, it's something for the three of them. Maybe he'll ask his sister about it, should the opportunity arise; he'd ask Hiro, but he knows he doesn't like to speak aloud, and they've nothing to write on for even the laziest of explanations.

...Why did you give me IT?

( Just because he asked? Because Hiro wanted to try, presumably? With someone who could make candy appear out of thin air, who so seemingly earnest came to him with those words, even if later on he admitted it had been a farce— but he'd still apologized, for that. Admitted he did want to be friends, truly.

Maybe it's fine, leveling out that way. )

[ He points at Natsume.

Because he asked. Because it's him. Because he wanted to be friends. Because, despite better judgement, despite Maya's warnings, he wants to trust people.

He also figured if this was the wrong decision then Maya would swiftly get rid of Natsume so it's fine, it was fine. She's very good at turning away people who are no good. ]

( Natsume stares for a moment before it dawns on him, and he hides a smile with some food. )

You're such a simple perSON, Hiro-kun, but that's what I like about YOU.

( Simple boys are so nice. Some of his favorite people were that way, actually, though mostly because he had a good time fooling them. All in good fun. )
