You're doing better than you used to!

[it's a true statement, while she still has energy to keep going - slowly, she's been getting stronger. her endurance is growing, and that's all she needs - the rest is a side benefit.

...

turning to float herself, she thinks that now he's exhausted, she can delve into the real reason they're here. the trick that she's played isn't quite nice, but she thinks it's deserved, with the smoldering embers of hurt in her, the hairline crack she's grown around him that blooms from trust.]

Hey...Shin...

[she uses his name because they are alone, and it is a gift he gave her for those moments of privacy. of honesty.]

About Friday...I don't know what to believe anymore. Lucifer told me that so many people were saved, but then I know so many people died by others' hands. I heard the sounds of them dying, before I had to go.

[she exhales, and if it sounds a bit heavy, she knows. this is designed in a way that she hates - but if he's lied to her, then he deserves it. if he's a ruthless killer who wouldn't even have a reason to do it, he deserves it.]

Maybe I just don't want to believe so ill of my friends, to kill just because someone told them to.

[did you kill them? does she have to ask it again?]

So you're telling me you wanted to make it quick.

[softly spoken, correcting his course as surely as if she had tapped her cane to his lips. he is in that number. he needs to remember this. she doesn't want to give him away, to cut him off and bleed and bleed until it hardens like tree sap over wounds, but she will if she has to, and cry until her tears turn to amber.]

Instead of leaving it in the hands of others...how did you do it?

[she feels sickened to think about it. with the agony that fire takes from a person, him talking about luring people - it's twisted, it's cruel, and he can hear the way she inhales, how it strikes her. the thought of that, rooting in her gut and upending her. she hopes they were unconscious first, that they didn't feel anything when it happened -

wait. something's not right. something's not adding up, when she thinks about it. she had practically flown back to the dorms that day to hide in her room, try to write again, only leaving when the storm started...]

How did you lure them, Shin?

[something doesn't feel right, because it would be hard to convince someone to get into a strange coffin. once, maybe, but if it was ashes inside? is he saying he knocked them out?]

They agreed? Even with the ashes left inside from the others? I'd think that'd be offputting.

[when you're that scared of death. as if they both didn't know how terrifying death was, what one might do to avoid it. who they might leave behind.]

Stress, huh...

[she can't take this. she swims closer to him, pushing herself until they're floating side by side, until it's easy to reach over for where his hand is in the water, to touch it, curl around it. trying to connect, trying to understand, to make sense of this. either she's crazy, or something isn't right.]

Shin...you said you convinced them to get in the coffin for safety. That they hid, and then you turned it on. But that means you burned them alive, and that's a very painful thing.

[maybe he doesn't know yet that she can feel for those twitches, the subtle things that give away stress, the truth. maybe he'll think she just wants him to focus on her.]

I didn't hear anyone screaming.

I'm sick? You're the one who's saying you burned people alive because you were told to!

[the words rise in pitch, strike out like a lash. she swims away, feeling for the ladder - to hold onto it, while she trembles barely in a way that has nothing to do with the water temperature at all.

her eyes sting from a mix of chlorine and the anguish that wells up in her, easily as making a wound with a scalpel. she can't see him, but he can see the look on her face, in her eyes - that she tries to wipe her eyes and only makes it all worse.]

...For once, I'd be happier if you lied to me. If you took any of the chances I wanted to give to you to say "no, Helena, I didn't do this," that you weren't a killer like that. But I suppose...I should respect that you didn't. That you've stayed honest with me-

[her voice breaks on the last word, and she is crying, silent and strained, holding onto the ladder like it will save her.

even he would kill her. she knows this. she knows it, and it still hurts. nowhere is safe anymore.]

To save yourself!

[the phrase is broken, agonized, flung out at him.]

To live, not just....just for killing's sake!

[that was a reason, and one she could forgive, knowing how desperately the self wants to not die. killing to live, because it was you or them. but killing just because you were told they'd die either way? when she knows there might have been another option - those silent bodies hidden in the dorms - it's wrong, it's wrong, and she can't even pull herself out of the water. too miserable to, just holding on so that she doesn't sink down into the abyss.

normally, when talking to someone, Helena turns her head towards them, lets sighted people feel more comfortable that way. but right now, she stays where she is. he can listen just fine like this. he can hear how hard she's trying to cry quietly, and what slips through regardless.

if he's like this, he's no better than a hunter, laughing and striking her down again, again.]

[she doesn't say anything to him in reply. she doesn't trust her voice. of course she can keep a secret - she even left his name out of his Christmas present just in case someone walked behind her while she had been working on the code and saw who it was to. calling him her friend.

what a fool she was, right? allying herself with people like that. By lying low, you're asking for them to rip out your throat. waiting for them to kill her for her belief.

the tears fall, hot and shameful. but she's not telling him to shut up.]

What use do you have to keep it secret? They asked, you did it - it's not a mystery. Every teacher would be asked the same thing.

[now she can feel herself trembling some from the chill, and her voice is softer when she manages to speak through her tears. but she doesn't want to move. doesn't want to alter a thing. wants to take her heart and drop it down until whatever lives in the pool can have it.]

I asked, you told me the truth.

Asked by the school...

[wait. wait. even through her tears, her hurt, something also isn't adding up here.

can you keep a secret?

why does it matter if you know?

it doesn't make sense, doesn't reconcile with a man who's so desperate to live that he'd hide behind another name, a man who knows he's physically weak and another easier target like her. it would be simpler to paint himself as a coward who let another teacher do it. not someone who'd scheme and kill nine people by burning them alive. in this school, to be dangerous is not always strength. they survive by staying low, low.

her breathing slowly evens some, and she wipes her face, though it's rather useless, water in water.]

...Shin?

[there are a lot of questions in his name. the thread of hope she'll wind about her wrist - the bad that happens is so that hope can overcome it...

why did he confess so easily to something even the devil didn't wish to do?]

[if he knew what she was trying to do earlier, why did he let go?

...

she lets go of the ladder, and gathers up the remaining pieces of her heart. by the sound, she can judge where Shin is - and Helena dives, swims to him, to resurface next to him. to try and take his hand again.]

...Did you kill those students?

[don't let go. don't pull away from her. please. say anything, but don't let go. she's putting pieces together, feeling where they go, even when her heart is bleeding tree sap in multiple places - using it to stick the pieces back together.

don't let go.]
