 the flowers of the gardening club seem to be thriving! what with the, um, nutrient-rich water and the abundance of plant food and sunlight, and experienced members there to keep a helpful eye on things for the new gardeners! a pot and a planter seem to have been removed from the room, however- and a small potted tree has joined the group, carefully labeled with a sign requesting it not be touched. nene's own private flowers carry a similar sign on their planter as well. turing's jade plant is unofficially in her care, as is hinata's flytrap until he at least knows it belongs to him. the wisteria tree outside is hauntingly beautiful, and the sky rains ash sometimes. it's fine. they're fine. in a world of turmoil and the occasional week-long disappearance, sometimes you have to stop and make sure the roses are still blooming.

[Nene had invited him to visit the gardening club sometime. It does seem like a pleasant change of pace, and he knows he could stand to learn more about plants! And so there he stood in the classroom's doorway one day, like some socially awkward vampire who has to be invited into a room.]

Ah... Good afternoon. I hope that I am not interrupting anything important! I am simply here to visit this fine gardening club, and to witness the results of everyone's hard work!

[Lucifer is very lovingly tending to the plants when Ishimaru walks in and, upon hearing his voice, turns to glance over his shoulder and offer a friendly nod.]

Come in, then. There's no need to stand in the doorway like that.

[His tone comes across as calm, even if the words themselves want to be clipped and curt.]

Ah... A splendid suggestion, Lucifer-san! I shall enter at once!

[With a brief, nervous chuckle, he shuffles into the room. Seeing Lucifer tending to plants is a welcome change of pace from talking him about grisly subjects during class meetings.]

So you are another member of this fine club. How are things faring?

[Lucifer would much rather talk about plants than discuss murder anyhow, even if he is a demon. Some things just aren't to his extremely regal tastes these days.

That aside, the plants themselves seem well-maintained, and Lucifer — meticulous as he is — has taken to measuring the growth of stalks and leaves with a tape measure and logging his findings down in a small notebook.]

After we were able to get out into the courtyard, they've been a lot better. Windows don't provide as much sunlight. I'm in the habit of moving the plants back inside at night, but when the weather is good, [and when it isn't raining ash,] I do tend to let them sit outside for a spell.

[He logs down a few centimeters of growth on one particular plant before turning back to Ishimaru, offering a friendly, calm smile.]

Are you interested in gardening at all? Or are you just checking in to see how clubs are operating as a student council member?

[Ishimaru's knowledge regarding plants is not extensive, but from what he can tell, they seem to be quite healthy! He looks fascinated while he looks at the plant and listens to Lucifer's account about the care of the plants.]

I see... [Deciding when to take a plant outside and bring them back in - it seems like gardening requires a lot of thought!

There's a hint of a smile on his face as he answers Lucifer. A curious smile, one that seeks knowledge!]

You could say the answer is a bit of both! I do want to check up on the operations of the club, and Yashiro-kun also invited me to see how the plants are doing. I do find myself quite curious about gardening in general, at the same time! It is an area that I do not know much about, so I wish to learn more. And now, while school is on summer break, it seems like a good time to study this splendid subject!

As part of my own chores back home, I was one of those responsible for tending to our garden. [A great deal of that work fell to Satan as well, but normally if Satan was around outside, that meant that at least thirty feral cats were also around...] I also once crossbred a new genus of rose to give to someone dear to me, so you could say I have a certain expertise in this area.

[Those are his credentials he listed, basically. Why he's a good choice for a mentor and all that, if Ishimaru wishes to learn about gardening. What better way to learn than from a man who's thousands of years old, after all?]

You're welcome to try your hand at gardening, and I'd be happy to teach you more. Actually, I could use someone to help me take the plants that require daylight outside from time to time. There are many varieties of plants that require certain light levels, and fluorescent bulbs don't exactly do the trick; at the same time, I hesitate to simply leave the pots outside where they will be unattended and wilt lest we get locked inside again.

( nene is currently tending to a bundle of round leaves and curling stems- though whatever it may be, it hasn't begun to bloom otherwise. but she seems pretty excited about it! )

[He politely greets her, with a small smile. She is the one who invited him to look at this club's progress, after all! He steps forward and leans to get a good look at the plant. He can't make out any actual strawberries, but he understands that this is a work in progress! He looks on with a proud smile.]

Ah, I see...! It seems as if still has some growing to do, but it does look quite healthy! You must be taking great care of it.

Yeah, they'll take a while... especially since they'll be bearing fruit. We got started kind of late. But the leaves are bright and healthy, and they've got a lot of space to grow, so I think when they do fruit, it'll be wonderful!

( with a soft smile, nene watches the plant just... exist for a little more, before she moves it back for optimal light in the window. )

We have a lot of variety too. It's really nice!

Ah, as I expected! I am sure that under your care, the time for these plants to bare fruit will come even sooner than expected! I am glad that the outlook is so bright!

[Ishimaru is practically shadowing her and making mental notes of what she does. Ah, it looks like the plant needed to be more in the light. How fascinating!

He then glances around to take in the other plants.]

You certainly do! It seems you all truly have been working hard at raising these plants. I am glad that, that his form of life can thrive here! [That any kind of life can grow and thrive here.]

[Add is still tending to his flower pot, which has finally started to sprout into leafy green stems. No flowers yet, but it's getting there, surely... maybe before the end of summer he'll have some little blooms? Wouldn't that be nice...?

Anyway, he's also still avoiding everyone else in the club, so it's more common to find him tending to his flowers in the early morning hours or late at night. He also might be the one who keeps "rearranging" everyone else's pots so that his gets the best sunlight... though, strangely, he does seem to leave alone the ones Nene has put signs on. Probably just a coincidence.

Sometimes, when he thinks no one else is around, he'll just sit next to the windowsill with his pot in his lap, staring at the leaves. It's... calming, maybe. If he's left alone for long enough he might even fall asleep like that, leaning forward slightly with the flower pot clutched to his chest...]

( she doesn't mean to stumble on him like this- but when she realizes what's happened, she can't help but smile a bit and dart away quietly for a moment.

and with relief that he's still there when she returns, nene drapes a deep purple blanket over his shoulder, soft and cozy, before she takes her time to tend to her own plants. she'll let him rest in silence- hopefully she won't wake up him before he's ready. )

[he appears to still be asleep... but Add has always been a light sleeper, even before he lost his humanity. he allows Nene to do as she pleases, though, only opening his eyes once she's done putting something around his shoulders and has her back turned.

... and he's just going to continue staring at her in silence while she does all her gardening. people-watching isn't so bad sometimes. maybe he doesn't want to disturb her, either. but eventually she's bound to look back at him again, and he simply stares back with a neutral expression, vaguely curious.]

You're still tending to Turing's plant.

( for her credit, nene only jolts a little when add speaks- at which point, she smiles as she turns around, with a nod. it's a little melancholy, but... it's a smile, so it counts. )

[... there are things he could say about the inevitability of death and how futile it is to take care of something for a person who's no longer here, if Nene even considers a machine a person... but he's not really in the mood. Instead there's a quiet, hollow laugh, a ghost of what might be a smile, and he stares out at the branches beyond the window instead.]

Turing... definitely hated me, kuku. But I would've liked to get to know them better... what a shame.

[Machines are always interesting to him... but it really is too bad. Maybe if he were someone else, they could've been friends... but at least he knows they had other people there for them. Better people.]

( nene is an earnest club president, that's fore sure. despite the missing flowers and the unusual addition, she's been careful on logging materials and supplies used, weather patterns, and helping in transporting pots to better, natural light when she can. she tries to teach where she can, but lucifer is there to help too which is nice, because even though she's been 16 she doesn't feel any more wiser or capable and she's starting to think growing older is really overhyped.

still, when someone comes in, she perks up immediately- however much she can, anyways, given the nature of this month- at least one of her brothers is missing and one's forgotten her after all. if it's someone new, she even says: )

( at some point in the past two months, nene's asked add for something special- and though he bitched, he complied readily. tsundere jerk. but she's keeping him around all the same. but it's for all the club members- even the ones who aren't there, currently. so one evening, with a carefully packed bundle (it's just wrapped in a towel, honestly) nene goes seeking out her... senpai. and eventually, she finds him. )

Sakasaki-senpai? I have something for you...

( he's been considering moving his things back to the club room—things are more or less settled between him and some of the members, and he isn't as ... scared, he'll admit it only to himself, scared of how they'll look at him or deal with him—but for the moment, they remain in their little hideaway above the library, brought out only long enough to get the minimum amount of sunshine and water.

they're surviving, but crawlspaces are no place for people or plants. it's a little claustrophobic, but there's something nice about sleeping where no one can find him...

he's still dirty from crawling around in one, little smudges on his face and his arms, when nene chances upon him exiting the library—he pauses, then rubs the dirt he knows is on his cheek. (it does not help.) )

No, but I had Add-kun make something for the gardening club- and... you're still a member, aren't you? Even if you're not there. ... I'm the president, so I can make the rules on any activity requirement, actually, so you still are. --Unless you don't want to... but. Anyways- here.

( and now nene offers up the small bundle. inside are little vials of a green substance- liquid plant food, made to be as enriching as possible. )

[ Cronas plant has totally and for sure died by now. Its just the way of things. They tacked up a sad poem above their pot about the fragility of life, and are working on planting a new seed now, carefully using the technique Shinobu taught them a few months ago.

Still they seem...pretty happy? ]

Hey, why can't we touch some of the plants here? Are they cursed like the ones from Mr.Lucifer's house?

Well, one of them doesn't belong to us- I'm just helping the owner take care of it. It's not polite to touch other people's things without permission, especially with things as delicate as plants.

( as crona tends to a new seed, nene is carefully harvesting some fresh mint! gonna put that in a lemonade or something, it'll be wonderful. as she harvests, however, she's also making sure to cut away some dead leaves. )

The others that shouldn't be touched are for important things, like making medicines. Shinobu-nee is going to teach me how! But before they're ready, we don't want the plants getting hurt. ... If anything happens and you need medicine, please get Shinobu-nee, okay? Or Elizabeth-san or Ishigami-kun. These flowers need to be processed first.

They won't eat you, but some of the flowers in the planter will agitate the skin. It's not a pleasant feeling, so please be careful around it- that's another reason I don't want people touching them without permission. Okay? You're being really good!

( after a moment, though, nene offers crona a mint leaf. )

Here! This is safe to eat raw or cooked. We can put it in drinks and stuff, buuuut.. ( she pops one into her own mouth and just, lets the flavor sit for a bit. so fresh, so strong, but soooo good! the mint ruse is a distraction ) It's tasty!

Ooooh. [ They take the leaf, staring at it for a second in their cupped hands and looking frantically back at Nene to make sure she absolutely isn't lying to them. ] I mean, I can try it...promise its not itchy?

It's...sort of spicy? [ They lick their finger to try and figure out the source of the taste. Spicy..but kind of cold. Its the only way they know how to describe the feeling the menthol is leaving in their mouth. ] Like toothpaste!
