Like how when your kid sibling wants to help so you make up tasks for them to do so they can feel accomplished even though you could do everything a lot faster and better by yourself. Doing hair takes a lot of patience, painting nails is very precise work, makeup is basically painting and understanding contours and colors. All useful skills to have. ]

You didn't need to commission those gifts from me, back then. If it were my birthday, I would have been happier having somebody give me that time and attention, rather than receiving something somebody else made.

They suppose, yeah, receiving gifts is the most standard part of birthday and people don't really go the "spending time together" route unless they're old or are like them, who doesn't exactly know what to do with material things that's theirs to keep instead of passing through their hands like all their wares.
