Why does the human body have so many little bones...? I know the major ones, but this is something else.

Each bone has an important function. Even the ones in the skull are separate so a baby's head doesn't crack like an egg when they're born, and the brain will have room to grow without a kid's head exploding.

[ And that's just the skull. Wait until they get down to the wrists and ankles. ]

You can't really see all the teeth on this skull. I'll draw a new one with the bottom jaw half ripped off so it'll be easier for you to label.

No. I was in middle school before I came here. I didn't want to do anything but run around and play soccer.

I think it's better to try something you might fail at and get something out of it, even if it's not what you were hoping for~. But I guess that's easy for me to say.

[ He frowns because yes, he did wake up in a hospital and immediately got out of bed and tried to walk, and maybe that's why recovery has been as much of a struggle as it still is. Was that better? He tried, and did not like what he got. ]

Sure is. Anyways, no, I didn't want to be a doctor. I'm no good with living things, so I'm not particularly interested in working with them.

[ By extension, not very interested in people, either, with how he goes back to his outlining textbook diagram bones and is more engaged in naming bones than he is in idle conversation. ]

[that's fine, subaru can be interested in both of them. the bones and the idle chatter. it's a little relaxing, mimicking rokuro's movements and peering at the labeling.]

It is a pretty hefty one. I have... had a dog back home, named Daikichi, and he was my dog, y'know? I fed him, I took him for walks, I disciplined him... I took care of my mom for a while too.

[humans are such a heavier responsibility in some ways. how they can ask you for help and you can understand it, and how they don't have to ask you for help and you can still understand it. the way they rely on you...]

I've got a plant now though, so that's about as "living" as it gets~. They're pretty easy as long as you put reminders around your room to make sure you water or mist it or whatever it needs.

[ A dog is different from a person, and a mother... is supposed to be able to take care of herself, an adult, it's not the same even if he can sympathize, while doubting Subaru thinks of it as anything to be sympathetic towards. He loves his dog and his mother; he wasn't forced to do any of that. ]

Why a plant in the first place?

Just 'cause, I guess? I dunno. It sounded fun at the time, and then the shopkeep -- have you met 'em? super cute, super friendly, always wanting to pitch a good sale with a rock in hand -- sold me a suncatcher with a plant in it 'cause they heard I wanted to take care of one~.

[and now he has to ensure it lives forever.]

It might not bloom into anything... [he doesn't know what plants do, really, and it looks sort of like a? cactus maybe?] But I still wanna see what happens.

What do plants even do? It'll grow. And then it'll die. ]

Let me hear you name the vertebrae. These are easy.

[yeah he doesn't know anything in particular just the areas of them which is fine most of them are named like that anyway.]

[ He stares at Subaru like he's expecting for him to continue but he doesn't. Okay. ]

You have the bulk of it. There's seven cervical vertebrae, designated C1 to C7. C1 is called the atlas, and attaches to the skull and pivots using C2, the axis. You have twelve thoracic vertebrae, T1 to T12, and then the five lumbar vertebrae, L1 to L5 you can feel at the small of your back. But then you have the sacrum which is five fused vertebrae, and the coccyx which is made of three to five fused vertebrae. That's the tailbone.

[ This is about as interesting as anat phys is, you stare at a diagram and memorize things but at least here I refuse to go into bone features like epicondyles and eminences. ]

So they gave up naming 'em, huh? Yeah, I totally feel that. I would've started just numbering them too at that point. Is the sacrum where your butt plate is?

And then there are the ribs, which similarly use that boring number scheme.

You have twelves pairs, with the first seven connecting the thoracic vertebrae and the sternum, the numbers eight to ten— the vertebrochondral ribs— connecting to the rib above via the costal cartilages, and the last two pairs being being floating ribs that do not connect to anything at all. It's kind of funny because the ribs are supposed to protect your heart and lungs, but you can also break them by coughing.
